I'm sorry but you are wrong, and here is why: writing, providing QA and QC and maintaining said driver is NOT a job Joe basement coder can do, in fact there are only an EXTREMELY small amount of people actually qualified to do that work. your argument might as well be "Just show us a picture of the brain and we'll develop our own brain surgeons" which as you can see would just be insanity. it takes years of education, and years of experience after that to become a good enough coder to work in such a low level environment without cocking it all up, and most of those people that ARE qualified? Well they actually already have jobs and won't work for free, sorry.
Maybe you should read this fine article by one of the RH devs that points out why that simply won't work. it hasn't worked in the past, won't work now, and will not work in the future, because in the end there are simply too few qualified to do the work and too much work that needs to be done.
Oh please! perhaps you might ought to care about your fellow Americans who are dying daily from this open border policy instead of boo hooing about about having a fricking driver's license.
I hate to break the news to ya, but it ain't just poo little Paco coming to work that's crossing the border, we are talking dope dealers, human traffickers, some really serious scum are crossing that huge leaking sieve of a border as well. Look at the crime rates in the border states and you'll find their crime rates are climbing like mad, their jails are about to explode, are you will to pay a 30% tax increase for the increased police, prisons, medical care, etc to take care of them? We already don't have jobs for the people we do have, if you look at the real numbers and not the BS numbers you are looking at around 24% unemployment, and in minorities its much worse.
Like it or not we are broke folks, we can't even pay for what we have without huge debts, and you HONESTLY expect to be able to take on every criminal that can cross the border as well? i hope you got some big pockets, or don't mind rampant inflation when the gov prints money like mad to pay for all this.
To me the worst part is as someone who voted for Obama this is just the final proof to me that the man is simply not qualified to be the leader of the USA. Instead of standing for what he believed or offering different ways of dealing with the mess he has basically chosen to completely ignore the problem so he can pander to the Latino vote, just as he pandered in the Martin case for the black vote and after being against it in 11 being for gay marriage now to pander to the LGBT vote. The man simply has no leadership abilities and has done nothing but flip flop and pander, when he's not on vacation.
That is why for the first time since Reagan VS Carter I'll vote Rep, simply because i just can't stomach such a piss poor excuse for a POTUS.
Sadly we are already seeing what will happen, because history has made sterilization too distasteful what you have is massive welfare programs and "make work' where jobs that could be done by machines are done by humans simply to give them something to do. This is why you have corps like Walmart showing training videos on how to get food stamps because without such massive government handouts it would make no sense to hire the majority of their workers. The shelves could be stocked by machines, half the checkout lanes could be automated, and is there anyone that doesn't believe your average fast food joint couldn't just as easily have the entire food assembly automated?
We simply have to accept the fact that capitalism, like every other ism before it, is simply doomed to die. As it is now you could take those that control more than 85% of this country's wealth and put them in your average HS gym and you would have seats left over, and it would be easy to argue there are millions in the USA right now that simply won't hold a job, simply because their labor isn't needed. A good place to start would be Great Minds - Slavoj Zizek or his "living in the end times' talks where he points out the continuing advances in technology when combined with capitalism can only end in one of two ways, a socialist/communist style government or if one goes for pure capitalism the concentration of wealth will end with massive unemployment and masses with nothing. I would argue we are already beginning to see the start of this, with nearly half of the citizens of the USA paying no taxes because they are simply too poor.
In the end capitalism simply won't work, because what do the masses do when their labor simply can't be traded for capital? I believe it will get VERY ugly before it gets better, as those that now live like gods thanks to the current system will fight until their last breath to hang onto that power, no matter how many others must be hurt for this to happen.
The problem with that theory is one need regulation to keep the corps from simply colluding and we haven't seen that work too well. Just from what we know about there has been collusion when it comes to the price of LCDs, DRAM, and considering the way the HDDs stayed so high for so long I have to wonder if there wasn't a bit of colluding there, or at the very least an unspoken agreement to simply match each other's prices instead of competing.
While the free market works fine in theory in practice once you have enough consolidation and a high enough barrier to entry you end up with more of a cartel situation than a true free market.
I don't see how you could be, after all they made the statement to sell units and the statement is pretty blatantly false. The scarier part to me though is how many actually believed it. I mean I have sat here on this very forum and been gobsmacked as an otherwise perfectly sane individual would argue that since Flashback is a trojan it "didn't count" like a child on a playground demanding a do over.
In the end folks there is no such thing as a general purpose OS that doesn't get malware, period. Apple, Linux, Windows, ALL THREE have bugs and if one uses only the tiniest bit of logic you would know why, it is because Operating Systems are now some of the most complex software ever written, millions of lines of code designed to interact with a myriad of hardware, and that isn't even counting all the millions of lines of code for the third party software running on top. To expect any company or group to be able to build something THAT complex and not have a single error? I'm sorry but that is simply ridiculous, humans are simply incapable of that level of perfection. There is simply too many interactions going on and no one person can keep up with it all.
Actually it isn't AC, because as we saw with the PS3 if you can link machines together you can get some pretty powerful calculations done with them. Besides who can't see an advantage in having scientists carrying hand held tablet computers when it comes to building weapons?
The simple fact is, whether you like it or not, is there are countries out there that have dangerous intentions and computers can help them realize those intentions a hell of a lot quicker than figuring that stuff by hand.
Which is why I said if they like the brand then they should buy it PERIOD and quit with the logic hoops. I like Ford trucks, especially the Rangers. does that mean that Ford is "better" or that Chevy is "worse' than Ford? Nope it just fits me better than the other trucks, everything is laid out perfectly for me, so that is why I like Ford. My oldest has a Chevy S10 and feels the same way about it, even though it feels like a low rider to me, but to him it all fits his body like it was made for him so that is what makes him happy.
I have to wonder if it isn't part of the whole "Cult of Mac" thing in that it isn't enough for them to simply be happy with what they have, they have to somehow be "better" or "superior" to someone else. My grandfather was like that, with $1000 suits and a caddy every year, but I just find that shallow myself.
If Apple or Gucci or prada makes something you like and you think its worth the cost? Then please by all means buy it. But just don't delude yourself that just because YOU bought Brand X that Brand X is somehow better or more perfect than Brand Y or Z, because Apple hasn't been ahead of any curves in years, its not sinking tons of money into R&D and designing all this stuff, its simply buying parts and putting them together, no different than Dell or HP. in fact retailers like Tiger now offer better accident protection at a cheaper price than Applecare so you can't even claim that is the reason to buy.
Its just a brand folks, like Coke or Pepsi, and if it makes you happy than just be happy and buy it. The fact that you can't seem to be happy unless you are right and they are wrong just makes me wonder if that little voice isn't telling you the same thing I am, that you spent too much if all you cared about was hardware and not fashion.
I take it you've never been south of the Mason/Dixon line friend? That's just how we talk and unless i take the time to concentrate over it, which why the fuck would i care on a forum, I WILL be slipping the occasional Y'all, ain't, and folks because that is simply common speech here, just as its common to have a checkout girl tell you to have a blessed day or everyone in line talking it up about the weather, that's just the way we do thing here.
And surely the BEST argument you can come up with isn't 30 damned years old, yes? the 640K lasted so many years because frankly RAM cost more than a fricking car and every damned thing went bare metal. it didn't have a damned thing to do with Windows or DOS, early OS/2 didn't play nicely with large memory and most programs would positively freak, even on DR DOS or GEM if you tried to go above 640k.
Finally when did I say anything about it being a video driver? I have an older USB capture card and I prefer the older version of the video software that came with it over the newer one, but the older one doesn't like the new driver. luckily since I'm on Windows and not Linux I actually have that choice, whereas you DO NOT. You can either spend days futzing, live with an old kernel, or stay bleeding edge, that's the only "choice" the broken linux driver model gives you. Look at how the forums were filled last week with those that couldn't use their Radeon HD3200 IGPs in Linux because AMD doesn't support hardware that old, look at how Nvidia STILL has to put out drivers for the 6200 series, even though that hasn't been sold in years.
So don't blame anyone but yourselves for the lousy support, the lousy adoption numbers, the broken driver model, or the frankly piss poor upgrade system, because the community won't call Torvalds to the carpet so he gets away with giving you crap. remember a free shit sandwich is still shit, and you will NEVER get the majority, or even a decent sized minority, to accept CLI fixes and forum hunts as par for the course. i could wallpaper this post with page after page of craptastic QA and QC simply because there aren't enough devs to do the work, but read the post by the Red hat dev i linked to or this post with over 100 links of broken shit in Linux.
So don't blame anyone else when your numbers don't get any better, don't blame anyone else when MSFT locks down the bootloader and nobody cares, it'll be the lack of action of the community and their willingness to accept half assed as status quo that will doom any chance Linux had on the desktop.
Well I don't know about the mobile stuff but most of the "hands on" reviews I've seen on the PC side equals them putting the hardware through the paces and seeing what it can do. I remember reading one before the AMD E-Series chips had been released where they went to the trouble of bringing their own SSD loaded with testing tools just so they could get a few benches and see what the unit could do.
So if all MSFT is doing is turning the unit on and letting them go through some carefully scripted demos? Sorry that's not hands on as far as I'm concerned, that's just marketing BS.
Yeah this should be listed under "shit happens" as its no different than that time somebody at AVG fucked up and had svchost listed as malware, or that time one of them labeled Steam as a bug.
Its security folks, shit happens, things go wrong, mistakes are made. if MSFT refuses to correct? Sure you have every right to call them to the carpet. But as long as they have it fixed within say the next 48 hours (giving them extra time because naturally shit screwing up on a weekend is usually a bigger PITA) then i see no reason to get upset, anymore than i would at any other security company that screws up and lists my fav site as a bug, shit happens.
Citation please? because i thought you could always declare bankruptcy, that in most cases it simply wasn't a sound business decision. for example the airlines still had operating capital and money coming in when they declared, they simply went for bankruptcy because it would allow them to dump the retirement benefits they promised the workers (in return for getting them to accept lower wages) on the American taxpayer and keep the money.
as for RIM, I hope they realize they might as well simply shut down the entire handset business if they do that, because it would be suicide. the only ones buying Blackberry phones anymore are those who buy it for the messaging, which I have been told by several has become popular with teens in several countries. Without that being exclusive to Blackberry those customers will simply buy iPhone or Galaxys and that will be the end of that.
Why was this labeled flamebait? Did everyone forget the S&L scandal of the 80s, with everyone getting golden parachutes while the taxpayers got the bills, Worldcom and Enron of the 90s, companies getting tax breaks to send jobs overseas in the 00s?
Whether you like it or not you could put the holders of 85% of this country's wealth in your average HS gym and have seats left over, and whenever you have wealth concentrated THAT much its gonna become what we have now, bribery and backscratching and screwing the peasants to concentrate ever MORE wealth, simply because there is no such thing as too much wealth and power for those at the top.
I have to wonder if this is why no democracy has lasted as long as we have, or no empire survived more than a few hundred years. Money simply gets too concentrated, the peasants get tired of living like animals, and eventually the whole thing just falls down. I know it would be damned hard to argue that the average American is better off now than they were 30 years ago, with nearly half paying no taxes because they are too poor and the welfare and disability roles exploding.
Oil manipulation is just one of many abuses of the system we have seen, and in everything from the housing bubble to the dotbombs we've seen those at the top never seem to lose. that's no accident, that is having enough power to game the system, to make sure you are declared "too big to fail" and getting paid even if you lose.
But whose fault is that when Torvalds flat out refuses to allow a hardware ABI that EVERYONE ELSE has? Solaris, BSD, Windows, OSX, hell even OS/2 has a fricking ABI now and the ONLY OS that doesn't is Linux. So why should Nvidia or anybody else jump through hoops to support a broken design?
You can use Win2K drivers on XP, you can use Vista drivers on win 7 and 8, that's over a decade of support for a driver. That means that in all likelihood the hardware will be long dead before you can no longer run it on your choice of Windows OS.
I'm personally using a 2008 Vista driver on my fully updated Win 7 simply because it interacts better with the software I prefer to use, yet on Linux its fully expected that driver simply won't work without a recompile or major futzing, that's just fucked up folks, and even one of the Red Hat developers says the current system simply isn't sustainable, you have too few qualified people trying to support too much and the QA and QC simply isn't there because of it.
I can tell you that as a retailer that is why I'll sell a system with XP despite XP being creaky as hell now, simply because I can't even take a 4 year old Linux and upgrade it to current without shit breaking. The entire driver subsystem in Linux is a God awful mess and if this finally gets people to talk about it, instead of just accepting fixes and forum hunts as par for the course? let me be the first to say i'm ALL for it. there is no damned reason why companies like Nvidia and AMD should have to keep releasing drivers for old hardware simply because Torvalds ego won't let him see the current system doesn't work. And PLEASE don't say it would encourage binary blobs because in case you ain't notice? they ALREADY DO THAT NOW, you just have shittier support.
So don't sweep it under the rug folks, this is simply a symptom of a MUCH larger problem, and that is the current driver model simply isn't sustainable. You can get by with it in server and embedded because hardware changes there are practically non existent and positively glacial, hell many servers still use Rage II for GPUs for the love of Pete, but to gain in the consumer market you need to be able to keep up with the constantly changing hardware and the current model simply doesn't work. Its always behind the curve, always way behind, hell by the time things are properly supported they usually aren't being sold in retail anymore. this really needs to change folks, and the only way it'll happen is if enough people get fed up with the status quo and complain. You can and DO deserve better fellas.
But if their "effort" is simply "All we care about is PR, here is a little token to improve it" then seriously WTF is the point? They only have ONE real competitor, whose already opened their specs, so all the PR bullshit just seems kinda pointless.
If the FOSS community wants to help themselves they need to be avoiding Nvidia at all costs and get behind AMD so that Nvidia can see that there IS a cost for being assholes, otherwise all you are doing is proving their point that they don't have to open shit and can still make the money. in the end the only way to affect a large corp like this is voting with your dollars which will at the same time show other companies that playing nice like AMD is gets rewarded, not playing nice gets punished.
Huh, never thought of that but then again I do have a WinXP X64 disc sitting around left over from when I ran it from 05-09 so I guess i never saw a need to experiment. I'd still like to know where he got the disc from though, because I have never run into ANY hassles with Win 7 except for those OEM discs that are tied to a brand, such as the Dell laptop discs.
The green box Win 7 HP upgrade and the orange box family packs I've used a good dozen times on all kinds of hardware and never a peep, never a complaint, it just installs and takes the key, easy as pie. That is one of the reasons i prefer them over the OEM discs, with my own system I have replaced every single part but the case itself over the last two years and only needed a single online reactivation when I changed out the board, less than 12 seconds and it was right back to being fully activated. Hell even XP wasn't as hassle free as the green HP upgrade discs are.
In other words "I have nothing but "studies" handed to me by the BSA that says all of TPB is an infect and when you download software you kill a kitten". Again Razr provides checksums (as you insisted on) in both MDA5 and SHA to check ANY release by them, same with the new Fairlight.
So don't blame the world because YOU sir can't use a checksum or scan a disc. If you are downloading off of gnucleus or some other malware haven for noobs I'd say that's a personal problem, but feel free to look at the NFO for the Win 7 release and you'll see they DO provide checksums so you can check it yourself, you can also mount the image and use as many malware scanners as you like. Or are you saying they have come up with "magical" malware that NO scanner can possibly detect? because if so I'm sure the three letter agencies would like to buy that.
Doesn't change the fact that I haven't see an infected game.exe nor an infected Windows install disc in over half a decade, all the Windows discs come with checksums and the games come with the same cracks they have at gamecopyworld, no difference. If you want to use FUD to push an agenda that is YOUR business, but FUD is FUD and if you can't back up your statements with facts then that is what it is, FUD.
Thanks. Frankly I thought it was pretty obvious. And I don't hate Apple anymore than I hate Gucci or Prada, they are brands and some people go for that sort of thing. there is nothing wrong with that, I'll be the first to say this is a free country and if a particular brand makes you happy? Then please by all means do buy that brand. I like Asrock motherboards and Asus and Acer laptops and netbooks myself, but I'm not gonna lie to myself and say brand A is "better" in some way than brand B or C, its a personal preference, like what kind of shoes I buy or pizza i eat, its just a matter of personal taste.
I never did understand though why apple fanbois get all butthurt when you point out its fashion and then jump through logic hoops trying to justify the increased cost. i mean you never see Ferrari owners with little lists of why their car is a better value than a Mustang do you? of course not. Its all about fashion and price has always been a part of fashion, after all if just anybody can buy it that ruins the status thing, I mean can you imagine Prada coming out with $50 shoes? never happen, it would ruin the brand.
As a final note pointing out Intel talked about the Air with ultrabooks? Well duh, what do you expect the man to compare it to, he is trying to sell $500+ chips in a market where the average selling price of a laptop is $400 OF COURSE he is gonna compare it to the $1600+ machines, who else is he gonna compare it to? If you were trying to sell to the high end sportscar market, are you gonna talk about Camaro? Nope, it'll be the big guys like Ferrari and Bugatti, because THAT is the market you are trying to get a piece of, not the ricer market.
And lets be honest folks so far ONLY Apple has been able to sell any units of any note in that particular market and I would argue that is BECAUSE ITS FASHION. The reason the gamer laptops don't move is because new chips come out practically daily and you aren't gonna hit the leaderboards with yesterday's kits so the amount of money they have to spend on refreshes is insane, whereas Apple can sell the same model for a year and a half with NO decrease in sales. that right there ought to tell you more than anything its not got a damned thing to do with what parts are in it or the sales would fall when all these more powerful machines come out. the reason they don't is they don't have the Apple logo, simple as that.
Citation please? because that is the same argument that the game corps have been using to try to keep people from downloading games yet frankly i haven't seen an infected game in half a decade. Just for shits and giggles i took a disc from 2009 with the original RTM Win 7 with the bootloader hack and scanned it with 4 different scans, nothing. Zip zilch nada squat, which surely they would have gotten any malware into their DBs after 3 fricking years, yes?
So unless you can show citations by someone OTHER than MSFT or the BSA i'm calling FUD, because most of those releases are done by the new Razr1911 or Fairlight teams and those guys are quite proud of their hacks, most even have the checksums of their release so you can make sure its not been tampered with.
Sounds to me like you just want to push your Linux dogma which honestly? Linux is a good decade behind the curve on the desktop, thanks to all the infighting, NIH, reinventing the wheel, the DE wars, hell even torvalds is pissed at the drivers as we've seen on the Nvidia and ATI articles we saw this very week. frankly Linux can't even upgrade without crapping over drivers, Pukeaudio craps on itself, wireless is a fricking nightmare, I've even seen Ethernet crapped all over so you can't even get to the net to do the forum hunts and CLI fixes that sadly linux users consider par for the course. there is A REASON why people would rather steal Windows than take your product for free, its because your product is a mess that is built for servers and NOT home users, sorry.
LOL Wut? The PCs have been pretty much ahead of the curve compared to Apple on everything but shiny. Frankly intel is pushing Ultrabooks not because Apple made the air, but because the average laptop goes for $400 and they know their new core chips can't be sold on machines with THAT low of a margin which is why they are trying to push a market where they can sell i5s and i7s.
Frankly Apple has NEVER been ahead of the curve, they are a brand, like Prada and Nike. You look at even the machines Apple releases on their refresh and you can get machines that very same day that have MOAR power, MOAR memory, MOAR speed, and cost less. the ONLY thing that sells Apple is the brand, because it'll never be hip to carry a Dell or an HP, that's all.
Not saying their machines aren't pretty, or that OSX doesn't look nice, but that is simply not what gets people to line around the block to buy the new iPhone or iPad on release day when there is not a thing wrong with the iPhone or iPad they have. What gets them to camp like tickets to a rock concert is the fact that its simply not cool to carry last year's iPad anymore than it is to wear last year'd designer fashions. Its status, like Gucci or Prada or Armani, which is fine if you are into that but its not because they are ahead of anything, its because its fashion. Oh and before anybody brings up retina don't bother, you've been able to buy ultra HD screens for years its simply not been something people bought. People buy it now not because they suddenly give a crap about ultra HD on such a small screen, its because that ultra HD comes with an Apple logo. hell i'm shocked they haven't gotten into footwear, they could make $40 sneakers in china and slap the logo on and make $250+ a pair, talk about easy money.
That's weird, where did you get that? The family pack I used to get my family on Win 7 and the single use Win 7 HP I have on my desktop didn't ask for anything like that, simply if i wanted to keep the old install (using the Windows.Old folder) or install clean. Is it one of the OEM discs that are tied to a brand, like Dell? Because i warn people at the shop away from those things, they can be had for cheap on places like Amazon but you often have to run cracks to get the damned things to work on hardware other than the make/model they were sold with.
So if it helps the green box HP upgrade and the orange/brown family packs didn't do that, in fact i installed clean on both of my boys machines because i built from kits and saw no point in installing XP on machines that crossed the 3.25Gb RAM limit and they went great. I also did the same for my dad and his GF, using a family pack to install his work, home, and her newly built desktop, not a single one gave me a bit o' trouble.
I probably shouldn't say this but WTF, here is how you can get around that: Most people don't know they never bothered building a WGA for XP X64 so you can get a copy of that from TPB and it'll run with the included key. since you already have a key for Win 7 and aren't gonna keep XP X64 I don't see any harm in letting you know you can slap that on there and it'll be ready to go, no activation required. all you need is a 64 bit CPU which I'm sure your machine has if it isn't ancient, slap on XP X64 and then upgrade it to whatever version of Win 7 you have.
Uhhh...I run MS Office 2K on Win 7 X64 and with the compatibility pack i can open 2K7 (and I assume 2K10 but I don't know anybody with 2K10 so can't test) MS office files just fine.
You can bitch at MSFT about a lot of things but backwards compatibility? NOT one of them. MS office 2K runs like a dream on on Win 7 X64 and is insanely fast.
Their bang for the buck has been pretty damned awesome and while I'm not gonna spend $500 on a card this does make me happy as all those $200-$300 cards will be dropping that much faster and I'm sure by XMas my HD4850 will be long enough in the tooth it'll be time to trade up.
I have to say what I've been liking lately about AMD is how many formats they are supporting for decode and transcode, with the new XCode codecs frankly my hexacore barely registers no matter what definition I'm playing because so much is being dumped to the GPU and even on my little E350 netbook I'm getting just great battery life when playing 720p video thanks to everything being offloaded.
so I have to say yay AMD, having more competition is always better for the consumer. Now if only they could come up with something better than Bulldozer/Piledriver on the CPU front I'd be a really happy camper.

Doesn't change the fact that I haven't see an infected game .exe nor an infected Windows install disc in over half a decade, all the Windows discs come with checksums and the games come with the same cracks they have at gamecopyworld, no difference. If you want to use FUD to push an agenda that is YOUR business, but FUD is FUD and if you can't back up your statements with facts then that is what it is, FUD.
Wanna bet he hangs out at the local Starbucks so much they all know his name? Just gotta love the crazy fanbois. ;-)
Down to $3.06 and falling here from nearly $3.75 just a couple of months ago, north central AR.
If he wants an IDE then he can use Sharpdevelop portable which gives him half a dozen languages he can work in from the IDE. HTH.
