I have some friends that are ex military (USAF and US Army) that sent all their buddies that were still in and I can back up what you are saying, as nearly all of them wanted me to load games and apps on big flash drives. I had never heard of a "game stick' as they called it and it was explained to me that while there are PCs everywhere the connections are locked down and spotty so they just load games on the sticks and that way when they have down time they can "data dump" as they called it and unwind with some games.

Looking at the video in TFA I have to agree that it doesn't look really damaged so either a computer bug from those bazillion flash sticks brought it down or they had an engine malfunction and it autoglided itself to a landing. maybe its because i'm not a military guy but I was amazed that they all just walk around popping sticks in everywhere, that is the kind of crap i would have brought to a screeching halt when i was working corporate and i can't believe that the US military just lets them go around popping sticks. Hell with the kind of money we spend on the military they ought to just contract out to one of the OEMs to have a nice ruggedized AMD netbook handed out to each soldier and then epoxy all the USB ports on the work machines.

The sad and frankly seriously fucking scary part? Follow the money, think about THIS question: What do these countries such as Iraq and Libya have in common? Not terrorism as Iraq had told most of them to go fuck themselves (As Saddam had too much on his plate with Iran to want to get involved and old MoMo had been throwing Al Qaeda in prison which just FYI but no less than THREE of the guys on the new Libyan ruling council are Al Qaeda) and its not religion as Iraq was controlled by Baathist and MoMo was more communist than anything so what is the connection between them and Iran and Syria?

The Federal Reserve and the Petrodollar, that's what. As I said the "rebels' rushed to make a central bank and quickly cut deals with the fed, Saddam had threatened to go to the Euro, and did you know that nearly two thirds of the petrodollars countries like Saudi Arabia trade for their oil ends up deposited in the federal reserve bank of NYC? And of course moMo had threatened to only accept gold for his oil as he feared the currency crisis, then suddenly he has an "Arab spring" moment, only its Al Qaeda and Qatar soldiers as the 'poor freedom fighters" backed up by billions in weapons from NATO.

I used to laugh at the whole "bankster" thing but frankly after paying attention to what has been going the last few years honestly i think that is EXACTLY what is happening, the banks are acting like the mob and anybody that threatens their operations get stomped on. on the one hand you have AIPAC throwing enough money into the ring that BOTH the dem AND rep POTUS candidate went to go kiss the ring at AIPAC before their campaigns, you have the fed making money hand over fist both on the petrodollars going out and then AGAIN on those same petrodollars when they come back, and then finally you have groups like Halliburton and Goldman Sachs tied into both AIPAC and the fed along with pretty much all major positions in the US gov making sure things run smoothly.

Frankly i don't blame iran for wanting the bomb, if I was them I'd be hustling like mad to get one just to save my own ass. it has been made VERY clear these last 20 or so years that if you fuck with the money flow, especially petro and narco dollars you ARE gonna get stomped on. there are too many of the 1% making frankly insane amounts of money off of these ops to let any third world country do anything to mess with the flow. look at which countries are left alone, what do they have in common? The bomb. its the only thing that lets you stand up to the banksters and money men anymore without getting squashed like a bug. if iran doesn't get the bomb they better kiss the ring and jump through the banksters hoops otherwise I smell 'regime change' in their future. Scary as hell that so few can kill so many just to maintain their profits.

Well pretty much ALL DNS is royally fucked and nobody is gonna be going anywhere.

But having lots of clients out in the sticks you quickly learn DNS is one of those things if you just don't do it yourself it just doesn't get done right. I usually have to set up 3 different DNS zones for clients just to deal with the shitty TTL and dropped packets at some of these SMBs, when all you have is AT&T in the area you learn to deal with such things. Well again it also comes down to power, as those older CPUs didn't have things like cool & quiet to drop the CPU when not doing any work so they ran full blast and if you were to use one how much longer would each task you have for it take VS a newer PC?

While i'm one of those folks that happily refurb older PCs for poor folks there is a minimum to be useful anymore. i mean seriously, who'd WANT to surf on a 733MHz P3? who'd want to do their work on it? IIRC it is generally better to use power to do a single job quickly and then drop to low power than it is to take much longer to do a job while drawing a steady stream, even if that stream is lower.

In the end while i'm a big fan of 'if it ain't broke' like with my example of the CRTs where taking those machines that practically run 24/7 and replacing the power hogging CRT with nice LCDs we significantly lowered our energy consumption sometimes it is better to go for the new tech where the power isn't being wasted. I mean which one do YOU think would suck more power when i was stuck at the doc for 5 hours yesterday, my old P4 mobile or my new Zacate?

I bet if one crunched the numbers the amount of energy used to generate the power ends up being more than the cost of making the new device, especially if the old device is recycled. Just look at the CRT VS LCD, where for a single day of 24/7 usage the LCDs use 1680w while the CRT uses 6480! That's a pretty big difference in draw there.

Not to mention watch the video of MoMo getting killed and nearly all his captors are wearing Qatar military uniforms and hey, guess who has a large base in Qatar? That would be the US military. Now there are 20,000 plus Russian stinger knockoff that old MoMo had bought in the hands of who the fuck knows, all because old MoMo threatened to sell his oil for gold instead of supporting the petro-dollar. Not saying MoMo wasn't a douche, but the whole thing smells like astroturf by the CIA using the Arab Springs as cover.

Sadly the USA has been the puppet of AIPAC and Israel for many years now thanks to what I call the "Jesus won't come back! Come back Jesus come back!" brigade that wouldn't care if we had to slaughter every brown person in the middle east to make Israel happy as long as there is a Jew in Zion.

So i'm sure we'll get lots more "teh evil Iranians want to kill us ZOMFG!" propaganda in the coming months, just as we saw that to this day something like 40% of US citizens think we attacked Iraq because of 9/11. The Jews don't like the idea of anyone else in the region having the bomb even thought they have dozens if not hundreds of them, but frankly after Iraq any country in that area that didn't kiss the US bankster and military ass would be nuts NOT to want a bomb, as its the only way to keep the warmongers in the halls of power from running you down.

final prediction? Now that we are pulling out if Iraq so we have the troops it'll be a toss up as to whether we go after Iran or Syria, neither country should be feeling too safe right now. The problem with making things last is the flip side and that's the fact that each generation the power usage gets MUCH better. My P4 mobile laptop is still running to this day with a customer but at its best it would suck a battery dry in 2 hours flat and cranked out the heat, while my new Zacate netbook runs 6 hours plus on a battery a hell of a lot smaller and plugged in it takes a max 18w under heavy load, most of the time less than 8 I'd say.

And despite what others have said here their autoupdate service may be pay for but their website installer is 100% free. just pick all the apps you want, start it and watch it go, really great for a new build.

BTW if you don't mind another suggestion, how would you like to never have to reinstall her PC again? Just use Paragon Backup Free which ironically if you click the download it goes to Cnet but if you'll type in the name of the software into major geeks you can get the 32 and 64 bit versions there. The nice thing about it is not only will it let you schedule backups, not only will it let you do differential as well as full, it'll let you make a hidden partition with it that will store your backup images and work similar to an OEM restore partition.

Once you get her PC just the way she like it just install Paragon and make a full backup. Then you can have a daily differential or if your lady is like mine and doesn't do a lot of installing or changing things just have it do a weekly. Since i have all her docs and other user folders on a D: drive she can just restore back with paragon and doesn't lose a single thing. If you DO use my little system with Paragon and a separate drive for her user files be sure to give her a browser that syncs like Comodo Dragon or Chrome. That way all her passwords and bookmarks will be synced to her gmail and if she needs to restore her browser will just resync on the next start. makes everything easy peasy and the PC as close to indestructible as you can get. I've got PCs out in the field that have been running for years using the above, no need for me with insta-restore. With the above the only time the little lady needs me to install a new OS is on a new PC for her, after that she is hassle free.

Anyway enjoy and i'm glad to help.

And you sir, are an idiot. Where did I even fucking mention Microsoft? the article was about cnet bundling malware so i pointed out a place that offered unattended installers with no toolbars or other crap.

Maybe if you'd quit wasting everyone's time going "Wahhh he won't drink the RMS koolaid waaah!" and quit getting the sand jammed in your vagina because nobody wants to talk about your niche OS of the week then maybe you'd have something productive to say yes? Try making...and i know its a concept...an OS that PEOPLE WANT TO USE and then you'll gain share, how about that?

you know for a group that talks about "freedom" all the time you certainly come off as VERY communistic. Sure you'll allowed to be free....to use what we say and think like us. Otherwise you MUST be one of THEM, insert which group is not like you this week. Hey do you think you could accuse me of working for Oracle next week? I hear old Larry has assloads of cash and I could use some extra this Xmas!

Exactly. Nobody is saying the Indians are shit, they are saying that companies that take the lowest priced shit get shit for their money and when we see Indian coders that is EXACTLY what we are seeing, why try to hide it? Good Indian coders cost good money, same as good coders anywhere. These companies don't go to India because they want to hire top notch Indians at a decent wage, these corps want as close to sweatshop as they can possibly get. you know this, i know this, hell didn't anybody watch "How NOT to hire an American"? These corps don't give a shit about quality, its all about cost. This is why our landfills are overflowing with cheap plastic garbage and people are being poisoned in China melting circuit boards for the metals, cheap ass bottom of the line shit. this is just cheap ass bottom of the line software instead of hardware and India is where you go to get a programmer for a price lower than dinner at Mickey D.

As for TFA this is why i'm so glad i haven't included Adobe Reader on a build of mine since Adobe 6. There are several excellent alternative readers like foxit and sumatra and foxit comes with safe reading on by default, so why would you want the risk that Reader causes? With Flash sandboxed in low rights mode and no reader i don't have to worry about Adobe bugs, which is nice. You'd have to be nuts to want Reader unless you simply have no other choice.

Hey I don't have a problem with you being on XP friend, if it works why fix it? I have windows 7 on one machine and XP on another, why bother switching the older XP machine?

My question would be why are you trying to run Adbobe reader at all when there is both Foxit and Sumatra on Ninite. Just check the box, click the download button and run it, that's it. then you can say goodbye to crappy Adobe Reader.

As for why Adobe can't build a secure reader? you answered it yourself friend when you said you thought it was " one program to do basically one simple enough thing" when to try to sell copies of Acrobat Adobe has been piling shit into that program for years. That is why frankly for production software like Acrobat i really wish they'd go to a yearly license model like AV companies use. that way instead of being pressured to constantly add new shit to the program so they have an excuse to upsell you they could just focus on making it better and more secure and get paid without having to add crap.

Bimbo Newton Crosby. I always thought in my typical logical guy thinking that "As long as the pants fit and cover my ass i'm good, thumbs up!" and my GF just rolled her eyes and said 'There IS a difference oh clueless one" and as much as i hate to admit my perfect guy logic could be actually mistaken about anything she is right. better fit, better material, holds up better over time. I've probably gone through 3 pairs of my guy logic pants compared to her 'just shut up and buy it" pants which are still like new.

Lets compare this to the knockoff iPads, they have crappier CPUs, lower res screens, less storage, and the few that do have similar specs are just as high or higher than the iPad because Cook was smart enough to lock his supply chain up at a favorable price tag. that makes them kinda pointless when you consider the larger support base of the Apple market unless you are just going out of your way NOT to buy apple, in which case its not like Apple is gonna make a sale if they wipe out the competition.

if you buy the knockoff you do so with eyes open. you decide its cheaper, it covers your ass, you're willing to deal with lesser quality for less money. I mean we've seen sub $200 Android pads all over the place for a couple of years now but I don't really see Apple suddenly having a nose dive in sales of the real thing, do you?
