  1. Re:Simple reason really on Nvidia and AMD Hug It Out, SLI Coming To AMD Mobos · · Score: 1

Sorry but it is YOU that are wrong. As you can see from the post below me Intel's latest compilers still use the "AMD is evil" flag, and it gets worse from there. That ruling gives Nvidia a PCIe slot after Intel had already driven them from the market so that is about as useful as saying Commodore should be given free shelf space now, as the fabs are shut down, the devs pink slipped, the lights turned off.

So that one is completely pointless and in fact rewards Intel for rigging the market as it doesn't give compensation to Nvidia nor does it give Nvidia license to the new sockets so they have no incentive to reopen the chipset division. It also doesn't specify WHAT kind of PCIe, so Intel is offering a lousy 1x lane on the Atom chips, big whoop.

And as for the compiler not only is Intel ignoring that ruling but they ALSO were not ordered to have a recall NOR were they ordered to offer previous buyers a non rigged compiler for free. Again this rewards Intel for douchebaggery as they get to have all those customers with previous Intel compilers cranking out AMD is evil code, while at the same time letting them flip the bird and continue to do so with the current compiler.

So I stand by my statement. Intel bribed competitors, rigged the market, rigged their compiler and got less than a slap on the wrist. Allowing their payoff of AMD to effectively shut down the case simply let Intel win, as making sure AMD chips weren't in OEM machines for nearly a decade certainly cost AMD more than 1.25 billion in sales, not to mention cutting Via almost completely out of the market and killing the Nvidia chipset division dead.

This just shows me how corrupt the current system is, and if the MSFT antitrust were to happen today they would probably be ordered to give customers a 10% off coupon on their next Windows purchase.

With power usage that low there is no reason why one can't build an x86 tablet and I would argue if you put a decent battery instead of these "iSliver" teeny tiny things it would be a kick ass product!

Imagine a tablet with 2Gb of RAM that would let you run your Windows programs AND games, or let you have a full blown Linux x86 in your pocket. It sounds pretty sweet to me and I'd rather have something like that where i can use whatever program I like than having to deal with some app store. Man that would be sweet, have WinAmp or MediaMonkey managing my tunes on a cell, or having Paint Shop Pro on a tablet so I could draw with a stylus or even my fingers?

Just because nobody has bothered with ULV chips much in the past doesn't mean it can't be done. The new Bobcat chips by combining CPU+GPU can really ramp down the power usage without needing a ton of extra chips for things like 1080p video.

Oh and they also ruled a single thumbs.db that has a picture they rule to be CP is is enough to put you away so you might want to clear your cache regularly as any nude pic could probably be a lolita in the eyes of a pervert hunting judge, whether it is one or not.

As for your other ideas? they can't get informants in that ring because the ones that are in it are all actual child molesters and no prosecutor is gonna let a child rapist get a deal, so they are still looking at an average of 60 years plus, and they know NO parole board will ever let them out early, so no dice there. Second they don't give you time to pull any CGI crap, at least not that would in anyway be believable. They also don't accept virtual shit, it has to be a real kid.

Not to mention what is so bad about 'dark silicon' (ohhh scary name) anyway? That is how AMD Radeon chips deal with those huge amounts of stream processors, just turn off the ones that aren't being used to save power, and kick them on when you do need the muscle. Or how both AMD and Intel use the extra heat savings from turning off unneeded cores to allow a speed boost with TurboCore.

Personally I'd rather have a device that had plenty of "dark silicon" so that it can kick it on long enough to do large jobs quicker then quickly drop back down than I would have a device with tons of specialized chips all sucking power, especially if they don't turn off when not needed (thus making them dark silicon) thus constantly trickling away juice.

Besides didn't we go through that in the 80s with machines like Amiga, and in the 90s with Sega Saturn and the 00s with PS3? Didn't they all turn out to be more of a PITA to program? And reading TFA it seems they are saying sometime in the future you'll hit a wall on heat transfer and as you go lower down the nanometer chain the worse things will be. Well when we get to that point wouldn't the smart answer simply be to stop trying to go lower?

Exactly, and I'd add that since most games are multiplatform even those that have PC enhancements are not really gonna slam the CPU enough to justify the huge price difference.

I just recently had my HD4650 replaced with an HD4850 and frankly the amount of bling bling "ooh purty!" I get on my 1600x900 monitor is just nuts and if I went Intel I'd have had to sink closer to $1000 or went with a shittier CPU like a Pentium or a dual core.

As I said after the Intel bribery and compiler scandals came out I switched my shop to AMD only sales (because i believe in free markets and putting my money where my mouth is) and my customers couldn't be happier. You can pick up 2.8Ghz-3.2GHz AMD chips chips cheap and unless as you said your needs are strictly single core performance (and even then I'd argue most folks wouldn't "feel" a difference in the chips) there just really isn't a point in using Intel unless you are like my two gamer customers and care about nothing but benchmarks.

BTW for those that look at benchmarks? Might want to keep in mind Intel has rigged their compilers so that anything you compile on them looks for the Genuine_Intel flag and if it detects it runs the SSE and above code and if not drops the thing to x87 even though AMD has supported SSE and above for half a decade now. So unless they say they compiled the benchmark with a non Intel compiler ANY and ALL benchmarks should be seen as suspect. It would be like saying a Mustang consistently destroys a Camaro on top end while conveniently neglecting to mention you tied a boat anchor to the Chevy.

So in the end since switching I haven't for a reason for using Intel in anything except for those wanting an ePeen or a money is no object workstation. everyone else, including gamers like me, will run great on AMD and will be able to use the savings to bump up graphics or RAM. I've even been going AMD on the laptop route, going so far as handing my oldest one of the new Turion X2 laptops and selling AMD netbooks, and again folks couldn't be happier. The new Radeon IGPs mean that when my oldest isn't in class he and his friends sit around a break room in college and have frag fests or play their MMOs, they get pretty good battery life, and the Radeon IGPs make video smooth as butter thanks to hardware acceleration of most formats.

Sorry about the length, I just hope this gets some of my fellow /.ers to take another look at AMD. I'm an old enough greybeard to remember what it was like to have an Intel without competition and it wasn't pretty, with assraping prices for even their shit CPUs. If you believe in free markets and fair competition you really need to support AMD after the Intel compiler and bribery bullshit, and with the money you save you can crank up the graphics or add an SSD for more performance.

If they actually cared about the children they'd be making more deals with the third world (where the majority of the stuff is produced) and be getting more boots on the ground there.

No instead what they and the states do is waste fricking wheelbarrows full of money chasing the socially retarded. I have a buddy that works in the state crime lab on this very subject and he says the ONLY ones they catch anymore on the net are social retards. For those that don't know a study was done awhile back (I'd try to find a link but I have NO idea how to type that into Google without the risk of finding CP) that showed that the social retards would follow the same pattern every time. First they would gorge on regular porn til it wouldn't get them off, then shemales/anal/gangbangs until that wouldn't work, then BDSM and animals, and finally torture porn and CP.

The problem is these guys are NOT THE PREDATORS and in fact if you were to lock them in the room with a kid they'd go hide in the corner. Most are to some degree agoraphobic and they have NO social skills so they sit in their little hole and watch porn all day.

Want to know what the REAL predators use? USPS. According to my friend they have a nice little darknet that NO cop can ever join (because the price of admission is you abuse a kid in the way they tell you with a prop they tell you to have in the shot and you have only X amount of time to deliver or forget it) that is only used to set up the initial meet and after that everything is encrypted DVDs sent to mail drops. He says the only way they catch one of these bastards is that one of their victims turn them in. Even he would prefer they spend their time chasing the actual predators instead of the retards but big busts make headlines and catching the actual rapists is hard so instead they chase social retards.

So sadly in the end what we have is another case of security theater, made to make it look like they are really making a difference when they are not. The ones having sex with kids would do so whether there was money involved or not so saying it would increase the amount of kids raped is bullshit, it would be like saying "Oh well, nobody wants my CP so I'll stop raping little Suzy and go back to having sex with adults". These guys trade amongst themselves, then one uploads it to some P2P or backroom server somewhere, and there you go. And the amount of time we stick on the social retards (many looking at 40 plus according to my friend) simply means we'll have to let more vicious criminals go to put up some guy who sits in his basement and jacks off. yep, smart plan we have there.

As for TFA personally I'm waiting for Nvidia to get bought by Intel. After the DOJ didn't say squat when it came to Intel rigging compilers or bribing OEMs I figured anything and everything goes and Intel IGPs still suck. Nvidia selling SLI to their former rivals at this point seems logical to me as Intel as been openly hostile to Nvidia for quite some time. Just look at how they wiped out the Nvidia chipset business by refusing to allow them on any socket past LGA775.

A couple of questions though: does Nvidia still disable PhysX if they detect a Radeon GPU? Because if they do this is gonna be kinda pointless as pretty much all AMD boards have Radeon IGPs now. And does anyone know if the Aegia PhysX boards are worth playing with? I've noticed them going for like $35 online and for those of us without Crossfire and running Radeon GPUs it might nice if it lets us run PhysX.

And what exactly was that snork for? The "bang for the buck" has been firmly in the AMD side of the aisle for quite some time, as you can see here on this handy chart. Thanks to the Intel socket roulette it has gotten to the point that depending on the socket one can build an AMD quad complete for less than a dual Intel and motherboard alone, that is how much extra you are paying for all those ads (and the kickbacks to OEMs of course).

Since it came out that Intel was rigging their compiler and bribing OEMs (where the hell is the antitrust bust anyway?) I've been selling AMD exclusively and my customers couldn't be happier. The lower price of AM3 boards and CPUs means they can get better features and more options for less money and having those extra cores helps to future proof a system. I mean how can you complain when you can get an AMD triple OEM PLUS a good ASRock motherboard for under $100, or that I can deliver a fully loaded AMD quad WITH a Geforce 210 AND a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and Win 7 HP X64, all for $550 while still making a decent profit? I certainly can't and my customers couldn't be happier with the performance. Not everyone is only worried about ePeen benchmarks you know.

As for TFA this isn't really surprising and the only shock is that Nvidia didn't do this sooner. Intel in their usual douchebag manner killed the Nvidia chipset business (again WTF? Where the hell is the antitrust already?) by refusing them the right to build on anything past LGA775, thus forcing everyone on Intel boards to have a craptastic Intel IGP whether you wanted it or not, so working out a deal to have SLI on AMD seems only natural.

To me the bigger question is why the hell don't they sell a 1x GPU board designed for PhysX. There are many of us I'm sure that don't have dual x16 boards that would be happy to buy an Nvidia chip just to add PhysX but screwing us over by disabling PhysX support if it detects an AMD GPU is just stupid, especially since that pretty much kills any point of having Nvidia on AMD with nearly all AMD boards having Radeon IGPs now. If they want to sell more GPUs a 1x board dedicated to PhysX would probably sell like hotcakes for those of us on AMD platforms.

Personally until they quit screwing us with the drivers I'll keep using Nvidia for strictly HTPCs (you can get a Geforce 210 for like $20 after MIR) and for those that want to game on the cheap sticking with the HD4850 (can't beat 256 bit pipeline for $60 refurb, and makes a cheap crossfire monster) or the HD5770.

She said a novel written by me about a dog would be "I had a dog, he is dead now, I miss that dog" LOL!) and while I'm great at basic math I never cared for Algebra or Trig so didn't bother with it. But as I said my bike wreck saved my sanity from being jammed in that cookie cutter hell, so it all worked out.

Oh and for the assclown that said "I bet he didn't get invited to no parties herp derp" and most likely a jock I wager? Actually I was usually the first one to be invited along with my band as I've been playing bass since I was 14. I found that music is truly a universal language, that it didn't matter what IQ or social boundary exists between people, music is common to all feeling people. That and playing "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" gets you a LOT of pussy.

So while he was probably looking for beer to sneak at 16 and hoping he might get to second base I was getting my socks knocked off nightly by a 32 year old brunette when I was 16. I would have run off to Cali with her after she got her PHD at 17 but dad refused to give me the title to my Grand Le mans sport, and I really loved that car. That Pontiac 455 may have sucked gas like a wino sucking hooch but I was making a good $200-$400 a weekend slapping down college boys in their Vettes drag racing. I thought my mom was gonna die laughing when I told that story to my new GF in front of her as Brenda said "I'd have had that bitch arrested! You were underage!" as that was EXACTLY what mom said to me all those years ago when I asked for the title!

So all in all I really can't complain. Would it have been better if I had had some sort of magnet school with teachers that were actually challenging? Maybe, but I've toured the south a half a dozen times with different bands (and am currently getting ready to lay down tracks in our new mini studio with my latest one) had more great sex than should be allowed, get to meet nice folks and help them with their PC problems (I even sold two new builds while tornadoes rolled overhead last night in the apt storm shelter) and have a wonderful Cherokee princess who loves to cook and just adores my family.

One final word: If you have children in the same boat? Home school them. When my sister found out soon after the birth of her second that she was terminal and that her husband had fallen to drugs she gave her two boys to me and my mom to raise. We tried traditional school until fifth grade, when a teacher actually had the balls to bring her bible into class and spend the ENTIRE class lecturing on "Godless heathens and Sodomites" (The oldest is Catholic, the youngest gay) so after telling that bitch exactly where she could shove her "good book" we home schooled the boys. The oldest is now on the Dean's list studying medicine, the youngest is still deciding whether to go CAD or be a chef. Both of them did SO much better once they were away from that damned sausage factory, it was like night and day. I just wished we would have sued the district out of exi

Riiight, you want to know the REAL reason why Linux doesn't have (and never will have) a Netflix client? Two reasons: #1 No kernel level DRM is allowed, ala Janus which is supported by both MSFT and Apple and which IIRC Netflix uses, and #2 because you have Linus "We don't need no steenkin plans!" Torvalds going Goatse on the kernel whenever he gets a bug up his ass.

So that means you either hand out your code, which in the case of Netflix would have a "Razr1911 fuck teh man LOL!" edition less than a week later, or they "pull an Nvidia" and pay a whole team of developers round the clock to deal with everytime Torvalds breaks every damed thing with one of his wild hairs.

Free as in freedom has a price my friend, and as long as you have the one two punch of no kernel DRM and Linus "Plans? What are they?" Torvalds you can give it up on ever getting Netflix. But cheer up, maybe Torvalds will retire and then you get someone to actually run it like a multimillion dollar project (can you imagine going to YOUR boss and saying "we don't need no plans!" on a multimillion dollar project? Can you say fired?) and then instead of having to keep a development team you'll actually have "write once, use for years" like Apple and MSFT (and Solaris, and BSD, and OS fricking 2) have had for over a decade.

Oh and BTW, before anyone brings up the LinuxTM "StableKernelABINonsense" you might want to actually look up the post against a stable ABI and you will see that is was/is completely POLITICAL in nature. The author went so far as to actually call anyone who doesn't have all their code over to the tender mercy of the kernel devs "leeches" and hoped their devices were Goatse'd quickly. Meanwhile Linux has yet another "killer app" that it can't use while its competitors CAN. How many honestly think you are gonna get any of those people to switch to Linux now?

Well excuse me for being bored! While the other kids were tinkering with their Chevy I was playing chess, and while they were struggling with basic math I was reprogramming the JHS PC lab to be a smart ass when you input the wrong data. why? Because I was B.O.R.E.D that's why!

I just got lucky that after my bike wreck I was given a tutor that accepted me as I was (Thanks Ms Edwards!) and finally got the school to accept that "integrating me with the other kids" was a BAD idea. The final straw came when the math class they made me set in on had a real asshole teacher that accused me of cheating simply because I had a calculator watch (which what geek in the 80s DIDN'T have that Casio?) which ticked Ms Edwards off so she drug in the principal and said "watch" and put a question up for both me and the math teacher while taking away my watch. while he was still struggling I blew threw it in a few moments and was leaning against the wall with my usual smirk.

When the principal asked how I was able to do that without showing the work and doing the steps I was like "Isn't it obvious? Its just basic math." and MS Edwards checked the numbers on my watch and showed them 100% correct. So what does the teacher do? Accuses me of hiding ANOTHER calc and wants to have me stripped searched! The principal just rolled his eyes and said "I think Ms Edwards is right, he is doing wonderful with his tutor and should remain there if he doesn't want to be here"

So yes it is completely possible to be smart and bored shitless at the cookie cutter crap they try to call testing nowadays. So instead of forcing me to waste time with useless crap Ms Edwards would have me grab a book from my mom's excellent Sci Fi collection and then explain to her the concepts and what I thought of them. Black holes, the grandfather paradox, she actually had me THINK instead of just regurgitate crap, and the history teacher she brought in was fricking brilliant, instead of trying to get me to spit out useless dates he challenged me to a game of "6 degrees" because he thought EVERYTHING could be connected to Woodstock. Never did manage to stump him, and it got me to really tear into every funky old history book I could get my hands on trying to beat him.

Sadly most likely now that we are broke thanks to two pointless wars and 2/3rds of the top 500 corps paying ZERO taxes for the last decade we will probably see funding for the best and brightest cut, so more cookie cutter crap that will simply bore the piss out of those with brains. Most schools simply don't know what to do with the really smart, so they just sit in the back and vegetate.

They finally forced me to go my last 2 years of HS, did they give me a challenging class? Nope the football coach took one look at the science heavy books I was reading and talked my teachers into signing off to give me straight As for the two years without me actually coming to class. Instead he sat me up in my own classroom and I taught the jocks on their study periods how to pass the tests so Johnny could keep throwing TDs for the team. At least it beat being bored or being accused of cheating if I was good at anything.

I know that in my own apt I'm being hit with about 2 dozen Wifi stations, more cell phone signals than one could count, and countless other signals being bounced to and fro all over the damned place. Where are the studies showing what all these signals going through the human body does? Remember that in the 50s it was all "radiation is your friend" until we figured out that in the long term it would give you cancer. hell they sold Radium water in the 30s as an energy drink!

So until I see some real long term studies NOT paid for by corps with a vested interest I'd say the jury is out. Look at how long they have been giving us food and drink with plastics leeching so bad even newborns test positive for plastics now? Our current climate appears to favor "when it doubt assume safe" which is a bad way to be IMHO.

The problem with those kinds of tests is they are designed to aim straight for the middle of the bell curve so that one on the low end will be frustrated and give up, those on the high end will be bored shitless.

Perhaps we should have a very basic preliminary test, and then give one more designed around which part of the bell curve you appear to be on? After all if someone on the low end slaughters the test you could always give them the next one up and continue until you found the correct IQ, but as it is now frankly it is just irritating for those of us with brains and frustrating for those that are sucky at word problems.

If they start surveillance simply based on the watch that would be as dumb as saying "everyone with a Tracphone is a meth dealer" because most meth dealers use throw away Tracphones.
