If you would have bothered to read your own link you would have found a handy little link where you buy a licensed copy for any OS you care to run it on, how horrible! To think, they actually want to be paid for their R&D instead of giving you the right to have their work "free as in beer".
You know, just because you want everything for free doesn't give you the right to force that upon others anymore than I have the right to take GPL code and lock it behind a paywall. MSFT has given the code for.NET (all except Winforms IIRC which wouldn't bloody work anywhere else anyway) they have given it as an ECMA standard AND given a legally binding community promise that makes it so any attempt to weasel out would get them laughed out of any courtroom anywhere.
So lets be honest here: The ONLY way you would take anything made by MSFT is if it were sold to Google. BTW, they using any GPL V3 in Android? No? Know why? Look up "TiVoization" and see what is gonna happen to the droid. I frankly find it hilarious that everyone in the Linux community is worried about the old dog when the new hungry wolf is about to bite you right in the ass. That is why you should tell your friends and relatives, especially those that are poor or have poor kinfolk, talk to your local mom&pop shop. Hell I got three of them right now that is paying me my labor costs at $10-$30 a paycheck, simply because they couldn't afford parts and labor at once, so I found them the cheapest kit deals i could find and let them just pay for the parts and pay my labor as they could, interest free. Really? Frankly (knock on wood) I haven't had a single Win 7 machine come back in infected. Not a single one so far and I've been selling it since it came out. Now that Limewire has finally bit the dust the infection rates have been falling pretty steadily, especially once folks saw how easy it was to rip MP3s from Youtube. Now that UAC and sandboxing the browser with lower permissions has been killing drive bys dead my constant headaches from dealing with infected boxes has gone way down TYVM and my software still runs!
Not saying the can't get infected, but I'm just not seeing it now that least permissions on the browser and Limewire dying have killed off the big two attack vectors. But knock on wood it looks like MSFT finally got it right WITHOUT killing backwards compatibility. In fact the only program so far I've found that simply will not run on Win 7 no matter what you do is QuickBooks 04, as the damned thing demands Flash 7, not the latest flash mind, it will ONLY work on Flash 7, but for that customer I simply set up a dual boot until he got the latest QB and all was golden.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna run some NOLF 2 or maybe SOF 2, both of which run great BTW on Win 7. Can YOU run all your old programs without hassle?
I agree, many of the game cutscenes have been more entertaining as of late than what Hollywood has been cranking out. If I were looking to make a game movie the C&C Kane storylines would be a good place to start. here you have a mysterious alien rock eating the planet but that can also be used as a power source, a MIC that guards the last green zones for the rich elite, and the enemy commander may or may not be the Cain cast out by God.
I'd add the original Bioshock but frankly I'd have no clue how you could film that without ending up with a Uwe Boll stinkfest. It just had too many things your audience would have to know about (such as Atlas Shrugged) and building that dark depressive atmosphere would be a bitch.
In the end I think that's the problem that I don't think Ubisoft is gonna be able to fix. A really good story driven game will usually take a good 5 hours minimum, some over 10, and will require the player to keep up with a hell of a lot of backstory and or mythos. Trying to condense that down into a 2 hour story that makes any sense will either involve throwing most if not all the plot away or trying to cram so much dialog into such a small space while keeping the action it would be like having Hamlet performed while the characters are playing Rambo.
Hell look at Iron Man and Batman Begins, they pretty much had to throw away a good 2/3rd of the movie on the origin story just to get everyone up to speed, and that is with characters most folks know. Can you imagine how much that would take for C&C Kane or C&C:Red Alert or Bioshock? Ugh and if we thought the "cake is a lie" jokes were bad we'd probably be seeing "would you kindly?" written and parroted every damned place for a good two years if the Bioshock movie was good, ugh.
Thank you for posting that, I'm so very damned tired of getting told "it works for me!" when on my nettop with Anvir task manager I can literally sit and type in a simple text box like this and can spike the CPU simply by typing in a bog standard text box.
I mean seriously WTF FF devs? For me it started getting bad with the 3.6 branch and FF 4 is frankly unusable on anything less than a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1.5Gb of RAM IMHO and that is just insane! I'd hate to see what FF 4 is like on an Atom or netbook, as frankly on this 1.8Ghz Sempron I keep for a low power browser box with 1.5Gb of RAM FF4 slams the living hell out of the CPU and the memory leaks have it slamming swap after about 5 hours on XP SP3. And it isn't like I'm running any weird extensions, just ABP, NoScript, and Forecastfox!
All I know is I have the same extensions (except for NoScript) in Comodo Dragon and it don't do that. I can leave it running all damned day, no memory leaks, if I close a tab the memory is returned to me (I've noticed FF 4 only gives a percentage of the memory back, if for example the page takes 80Mb and you close it you may only get back 50Mb) and if I dare open more than three tabs it will slam the living hell out of the CPU so bad even simple scrolling is like watching a slideshow.
So all I know is even though I've been a FF guy forever it is simply gonna have to go if it don't get better. I support a hell of a lot of users with all different kinds of machines, from netbooks and 8 year old desktops to the latest quads, and I need a browser that will behave consistently no matter what the machine. There is simply no excuse for why a browser opening a simple bling bling free site like Gmail or Yahoo Mail Beta or/. in classic mode should slam the CPU to 100% and stay there for 2+ minutes, or hit swap on 1.5Gb of RAM with only 4 tabs open. It is shoddy coding, or trying to shoehorn process separation simply isn't working on Gecko, who knows. But I'm slowly but surely having to wean myself off of FF and when I go my users will be going with me. FIX THIS FF DEVS!!!
Actually your point would better be phrased "MSFT should just say I quit and tell everyone to buy an iPhone" as backwards compatibility is what sells Windows and if I can't run my programs why in the hell am I gonna pay for Windows? I can run Linux for free or just buy a Macbook.
And you know what? For all the Linux and Apple guys creaming about legacy cruft we Windows guys like backwards compatibility same as most of us happen to like the registry, thank you VERY much! I LIKE having a new quad core with 8Gb of RAM and a 64bit OS and still being able to play NOLF 2. I LIKE the fact that the couple of thousand bucks I got invested in games still work (well as long as I go to Gamecopyworld for a crack, thanks SecuROM, you ass muncher) and my customers LIKE having all their expensive photo and business software "just work" even after getting a new OS!
To get rid of backwards compatibility would frankly be suicide, because it is the huge third party library of software and games that keeps people on Windows. Hell if I figured it up I probably have over 10,000 dollars in Windows software, is MSFT gonna give me that money back? Hell it is all the third party software that keeps the Wine guys working nights, as they know that its the programs NOT the OS that keeps people on Windows. lose that and they may as well close up shop.
The ONLY way to get rid of backwards compatibility with all the billions of dollars users have invested and hundreds of millions of Windows users is to write the baddest ass VM in the history of mankind, a VM so damned simple your grandma wouldn't even have to know what a VM was, while at the same time working on no less than THREE CPUs (AMD,Intel,Via) with both in order AND out of order execution (Atom through the latest Intel and AMD multicores) and on top of all that having to support no less than THREE GPU manufacturers and give at least enough acceleration that everything that runs on XP would run (actually I'd include Win98 as well, since currently Win9X software will run most of the time).
So frankly it would be probably one of the most expensive R&D projects in the history of MSFT, and if they boned it? People would be paying guys like me to wipe their OS in mass, just as I spent a year making Vista disappear for XP. If it comes down to several thousand dollars in software or having to run an old OS? Well fuck MSFT I have a firewall, and so do most other folks. It would be suicide.
Uhhh...you DO know there is a butt simple way around this, yes? 1.-Install the software, 2.-Install Deep Freeze or other similar software. 3.-There is no step three because at every boot you have a clean system and if there is any doubt at any time a simple reboot gets you a clean slate.
Now personally I wish MSFT would have simply built this ability into the OS, but with antitrust they'd probably be slammed by both the AV and the companies like Deep Freeze if they tried it. They offered a free version on XP called Steady State but they never bothered to update it and quietly let it die.
But in the end you really can't blame MSFT for this one, since their recommendations on writing permissions has been the same since Win2K pro, it is just nearly every third party vendor just gave MSFT the bird and wrote everything as admin because it was the lazy way to go. But if you are dealing with a vendor who after FOUR YEARS of UAC STILL hasn't bothered to write an acceptable program with normal permissions I would seriously be pushing for another vendor. After all if they can't even code correct permissions, what other shoddy code have they let slip by?
Actually, and I'll probably get flamed for saying this, you'd be surprised how many have bought the "you just can't infect a Mac!" meme. I got called into an SMB a few years back, where the guy instead of listening to me and paying me to set up a sensible top to bottom least permission approach bought into the "can't infect a Mac!" meme and then was shocked! shocked I tell you, when he found out he got pwned thanks to one of his kids wanting to watch a naughty video and getting the DNS changer bug.
You see the problem is something we that have been in the trenches for quite awhile (I started with Win 3.x, what was that? 20 years ago?) sadly run into far too often, it is what I like to call "magical thinking". it is the "If I use product X I won't have to change my habits or anything, and I'll be unhackable" bullshit. Hell I remember when firewall resellers were pushing the "if you have a firewall you are invisible and untouchable!" and it was bullshit then and it is bullshit now.
NEWS FLASH...ALL OSes can be hacked, full stop. ALL OSes are extremely complex pieces of code, with interactions on top of interactions with third party code thrown in the mix just for shits and giggles. There is NO perfectly unhackable OS and if there was one that person could hire Bill Gates to shine his shoes. The last real legitimate gripe about Windows, the brain dead "hey lets run everyone as admin!" finally died hard with Vista, so frankly all OSes are on about the same footing, as in TFA it all comes down to what the malware writer thinks is profitable.
Think OSX is immune? Read TFA. Think Linux can't be pwned? Look at the Android malware or the KDE screensaver malware that spread awhile back or even this handy how to guide on writing Linux malware.
The ONLY solution is a top to bottom least permissions approach, not magical thinking. Least permissions and users not being so brain dead they actively help the malware writer is the ONLY solution.
As a final note let me give a recent example. I set up a box, had it locked down nicely, required password for admin, least permissions, yet it got pwned in under 45 days. Did I miss something? Nope, the user decided he just had to have Limewire, even though I told him not to, so he disabled the antivirus because it wouldn't in his words "shut up" and then promptly gave permissions to Limewire to do whatever it wanted. And boy did it, 60+ pieces of malware.
So in the end it doesn't matter what the OS, it doesn't matter what kind of permissions model you set up, if you have someone with admin rights that says "I want my emails from Melissa and you WILL let me have them!" then no matter what OS, you're screwed. An OS is only as good as the PEBKAC sitting in front of it.

Buy AMD! After they bought ATI they've been opening up the code so FOSS guys can have decent drivers and support chips as old as they want, and their desktop and laptop chips are nice, and the new APUs have low power usage and full 1080p hardware acceleration for just about every format.
After the Intel bribery and compiler rigging (which they are still doing last I checked BTW) and Nvidia trying to burn the living hell out of their customers for THEIR mistake in picking a bad solder, I've been strictly AMD+ATI in my personal life and in my shop and my customers couldn't be happier. The cheaper AMD chips means they can spend more on extras like more RAM or an SSD, and the Radeon chips make video smooth and make it trivial to hook up even the little netbooks to a nice widescreen and have a great picture.
Sadly voting with our quickly devaluating dollars is pretty much all we have left in this country, as both parties are so heavily corrupted that they don't even pretend to serve anyone but their corporate masters anymore, and the courts from SCOTUS on down have made it clear the country is BY the corps and FOR the corps and fuck you peasant scum. So the only way we have to fight back against douchebaggery like this is to quit buying their products and hopefully start the corp into a freefall death spiral. Many of these corps have so many debts that a couple of bad quarters is all it will take, so vote with your dollars and tell your friends/customers/families to do the same. It is all we have left now really.
The problem was they used a defective solder on the GPUs, so heat cycling caused the solder joints to fail, which in your description would be the "WTF my screen is black!". I would sue if I were one stuck with the machine, as well as sue the OEM, since many like HP tried to "fix" the problem by simply sending a patch designed to max out the fans (causing them to burn through the battery and wear out quicker) in the hopes that the machine would survive long enough to go out of warranty so they could flip the bird to customers.
I hope this has taught those that by Nvidia a valuable lesson: don't buy from total douchebags. I was a life long Intel+Nvidia man but after the bribery and compiler rigging came out on the Intel side, and Nvidia trying to dump bad GPUs in the channel and screw customers with bumpgate I'm strictly AMD+ATI for me and my shop. I'm trying to switch to Chromium from FF because the memory hogging and CPU spiking in FF 4 is just nuts, but the spelling checker in Chromium based (so far I've tried Chromium and Dragon) is just awful! You know, I actually had a discussion with my friend over that very idea, and he said there is a simple reason why they haven't (and probably never will) make a deal with one of them. As he put it "The mob guy you can set up with a little business and you have about a 50/50 chance to get him to go straight (especially if there is a contract out on him) but with the pedo he will fuck little kids no matter what you do."

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but I'm seeing the memory problem as well. I have 1.5Gb of RAM in this nettop and FF after 4 or 5 hours will suck down all 1.5Gb and cause the machine to start swapping like mad. Now I shut down tabs when I'm not using them, and if I have more than 4 open it is incredibly rare. FF just doesn't seem to give memory back when you close a tab, at least not the full amount it took, so with every tab you seem to lose a little more memory. This is on XP SP3 BTW in case anyone is wondering.
And WTF is with the CPU usage? If you are on XP download the free version of Anvir task manager and have it run in the tray while you are using FF. I have a grand total of three tabs open and I can literally watch FF climb on CPU usage with every stroke of the keyboard and if I type fast enough I can spike the hell out of it, just by typing text in a text box? WTF? It is a text box WTF is it doing?
Again do I know WHY FF is doing that? Nope, don't have a clue as to why, all I know is Chromium based like Dragon do NOT do that while having the same features, so I have a feeling I'm gonna be saying goodbye to FF. I shouldn't have to have a fricking dual core just to type in a bloody text box!!
Hey there is NOTHING wrong with a machine that old as long as you don't starve it like in TFA. I keep a socket 478 2.8Ghz as a spare in case a customer needs a box while their PC is being worked on, but unlike TFA it has 1.5Gb of RAM, so it is actually a pleasant machine for web surfing and office work.
Hell I'm typing this on a circa 2005 Sempron 1.8Ghz that I use as a nettop and with Comodo Dragon for a browser and 1.5Gb of RAM it is a nice experience. Sure beats risking my quad when it is storming out.
So I'd say the problem is NOT the box, it is the fact they never bothered to throw a stick of RAM in the thing. I bet if he'd just politely ask IT they probably got a stick box just like me and they just haven't had the time to add some to the thing. I bet if he explained he knows how to install a RAM stick and simply asks for one (bonus points if he can name off the size and speed he needs) then he'll most likely get handed one. Most of the time if you don't be an ass to the IT guy he'll be straight with you. After all he is just trying to get through his day same as you.
I've had FF hit over 1.5Gb RAM after around 6 to 10 hours, even though I close tabs and only have on average 5 open. Do I know why FF does that? Nope, but I do know that Chromium based (Comodo Dragon) don't do that, so that is why I've been switching. I just fired up FF 4 to type this out and I can literally watch the CPU usage go up as I type. If I type fast enough I can even hit over 60% on the 1.8Ghz Sempron I use for a low power nettop. Hell just sitting here doing nothing it is using 24% CPU, that's just nuts. I also have been running it less than 5 minutes with 3 tabs open and am already over 300Mb, and we are talking about/. set to classic mode. Again just nuts.
So yeah, it ain't just him. Since FF 3.6.x things have been going downhill for me on the low power machines, and FF 4 is nearly unusable. Not using any weird extensions either, just ABP, NoScript, and ForecastFox.

If you would have bothered to read your own link you would have found a handy little link where you buy a licensed copy for any OS you care to run it on, how horrible! To think, they actually want to be paid for their R&D instead of giving you the right to have their work "free as in beer".
You know, just because you want everything for free doesn't give you the right to force that upon others anymore than I have the right to take GPL code and lock it behind a paywall. MSFT has given the code for .NET (all except Winforms IIRC which wouldn't bloody work anywhere else anyway) they have given it as an ECMA standard AND given a legally binding community promise that makes it so any attempt to weasel out would get them laughed out of any courtroom anywhere.
So lets be honest here: The ONLY way you would take anything made by MSFT is if it were sold to Google. BTW, they using any GPL V3 in Android? No? Know why? Look up "TiVoization" and see what is gonna happen to the droid. I frankly find it hilarious that everyone in the Linux community is worried about the old dog when the new hungry wolf is about to bite you right in the ass. Think RMS wrote GPL V3 because it was Tuesday? he wrote it because he knows GPL V2 is hopelessly broken and thanks to TiVo every corp on the planet knows that too.
So please, keep believing that .NET is some evil plot that is just taking a long long LONG time to come to fruition. That is why you should tell your friends and relatives, especially those that are poor or have poor kinfolk, talk to your local mom&pop shop. We're decent folks and we try our damnedest not to cause someone pain in the wallet. Hell I got three of them right now that is paying me my labor costs at $10-$30 a paycheck, simply because they couldn't afford parts and labor at once, so I found them the cheapest kit deals i could find and let them just pay for the parts and pay my labor as they could, interest free. I'd rather get paid for my time in dribs and drabs than see someone get assraped at these rent a ripoffs. Besides I've found you treat folks right the referrals will keep you busy. Really? Frankly (knock on wood) I haven't had a single Win 7 machine come back in infected. Not a single one so far and I've been selling it since it came out. Now that Limewire has finally bit the dust the infection rates have been falling pretty steadily, especially once folks saw how easy it was to rip MP3s from Youtube. Now that UAC and sandboxing the browser with lower permissions has been killing drive bys dead my constant headaches from dealing with infected boxes has gone way down TYVM and my software still runs!
Not saying the can't get infected, but I'm just not seeing it now that least permissions on the browser and Limewire dying have killed off the big two attack vectors. But knock on wood it looks like MSFT finally got it right WITHOUT killing backwards compatibility. In fact the only program so far I've found that simply will not run on Win 7 no matter what you do is QuickBooks 04, as the damned thing demands Flash 7, not the latest flash mind, it will ONLY work on Flash 7, but for that customer I simply set up a dual boot until he got the latest QB and all was golden.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna run some NOLF 2 or maybe SOF 2, both of which run great BTW on Win 7. Can YOU run all your old programs without hassle?
I agree, many of the game cutscenes have been more entertaining as of late than what Hollywood has been cranking out. If I were looking to make a game movie the C&C Kane storylines would be a good place to start. here you have a mysterious alien rock eating the planet but that can also be used as a power source, a MIC that guards the last green zones for the rich elite, and the enemy commander may or may not be the Cain cast out by God.
I'd add the original Bioshock but frankly I'd have no clue how you could film that without ending up with a Uwe Boll stinkfest. It just had too many things your audience would have to know about (such as Atlas Shrugged) and building that dark depressive atmosphere would be a bitch.
In the end I think that's the problem that I don't think Ubisoft is gonna be able to fix. A really good story driven game will usually take a good 5 hours minimum, some over 10, and will require the player to keep up with a hell of a lot of backstory and or mythos. Trying to condense that down into a 2 hour story that makes any sense will either involve throwing most if not all the plot away or trying to cram so much dialog into such a small space while keeping the action it would be like having Hamlet performed while the characters are playing Rambo.
Hell look at Iron Man and Batman Begins, they pretty much had to throw away a good 2/3rd of the movie on the origin story just to get everyone up to speed, and that is with characters most folks know. Can you imagine how much that would take for C&C Kane or C&C:Red Alert or Bioshock? Ugh and if we thought the "cake is a lie" jokes were bad we'd probably be seeing "would you kindly?" written and parroted every damned place for a good two years if the Bioshock movie was good, ugh.
Thank you for posting that, I'm so very damned tired of getting told "it works for me!" when on my nettop with Anvir task manager I can literally sit and type in a simple text box like this and can spike the CPU simply by typing in a bog standard text box.
I mean seriously WTF FF devs? For me it started getting bad with the 3.6 branch and FF 4 is frankly unusable on anything less than a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1.5Gb of RAM IMHO and that is just insane! I'd hate to see what FF 4 is like on an Atom or netbook, as frankly on this 1.8Ghz Sempron I keep for a low power browser box with 1.5Gb of RAM FF4 slams the living hell out of the CPU and the memory leaks have it slamming swap after about 5 hours on XP SP3. And it isn't like I'm running any weird extensions, just ABP, NoScript, and Forecastfox!
All I know is I have the same extensions (except for NoScript) in Comodo Dragon and it don't do that. I can leave it running all damned day, no memory leaks, if I close a tab the memory is returned to me (I've noticed FF 4 only gives a percentage of the memory back, if for example the page takes 80Mb and you close it you may only get back 50Mb) and if I dare open more than three tabs it will slam the living hell out of the CPU so bad even simple scrolling is like watching a slideshow.
So all I know is even though I've been a FF guy forever it is simply gonna have to go if it don't get better. I support a hell of a lot of users with all different kinds of machines, from netbooks and 8 year old desktops to the latest quads, and I need a browser that will behave consistently no matter what the machine. There is simply no excuse for why a browser opening a simple bling bling free site like Gmail or Yahoo Mail Beta or /. in classic mode should slam the CPU to 100% and stay there for 2+ minutes, or hit swap on 1.5Gb of RAM with only 4 tabs open. It is shoddy coding, or trying to shoehorn process separation simply isn't working on Gecko, who knows. But I'm slowly but surely having to wean myself off of FF and when I go my users will be going with me. FIX THIS FF DEVS!!!
Actually your point would better be phrased "MSFT should just say I quit and tell everyone to buy an iPhone" as backwards compatibility is what sells Windows and if I can't run my programs why in the hell am I gonna pay for Windows? I can run Linux for free or just buy a Macbook.
And you know what? For all the Linux and Apple guys creaming about legacy cruft we Windows guys like backwards compatibility same as most of us happen to like the registry, thank you VERY much! I LIKE having a new quad core with 8Gb of RAM and a 64bit OS and still being able to play NOLF 2. I LIKE the fact that the couple of thousand bucks I got invested in games still work (well as long as I go to Gamecopyworld for a crack, thanks SecuROM, you ass muncher) and my customers LIKE having all their expensive photo and business software "just work" even after getting a new OS!
To get rid of backwards compatibility would frankly be suicide, because it is the huge third party library of software and games that keeps people on Windows. Hell if I figured it up I probably have over 10,000 dollars in Windows software, is MSFT gonna give me that money back? Hell it is all the third party software that keeps the Wine guys working nights, as they know that its the programs NOT the OS that keeps people on Windows. lose that and they may as well close up shop.
The ONLY way to get rid of backwards compatibility with all the billions of dollars users have invested and hundreds of millions of Windows users is to write the baddest ass VM in the history of mankind, a VM so damned simple your grandma wouldn't even have to know what a VM was, while at the same time working on no less than THREE CPUs (AMD,Intel,Via) with both in order AND out of order execution (Atom through the latest Intel and AMD multicores) and on top of all that having to support no less than THREE GPU manufacturers and give at least enough acceleration that everything that runs on XP would run (actually I'd include Win98 as well, since currently Win9X software will run most of the time).
So frankly it would be probably one of the most expensive R&D projects in the history of MSFT, and if they boned it? People would be paying guys like me to wipe their OS in mass, just as I spent a year making Vista disappear for XP. If it comes down to several thousand dollars in software or having to run an old OS? Well fuck MSFT I have a firewall, and so do most other folks. It would be suicide.
Uhhh...you DO know there is a butt simple way around this, yes? 1.-Install the software, 2.-Install Deep Freeze or other similar software. 3.-There is no step three because at every boot you have a clean system and if there is any doubt at any time a simple reboot gets you a clean slate.
Now personally I wish MSFT would have simply built this ability into the OS, but with antitrust they'd probably be slammed by both the AV and the companies like Deep Freeze if they tried it. They offered a free version on XP called Steady State but they never bothered to update it and quietly let it die.
But in the end you really can't blame MSFT for this one, since their recommendations on writing permissions has been the same since Win2K pro, it is just nearly every third party vendor just gave MSFT the bird and wrote everything as admin because it was the lazy way to go. But if you are dealing with a vendor who after FOUR YEARS of UAC STILL hasn't bothered to write an acceptable program with normal permissions I would seriously be pushing for another vendor. After all if they can't even code correct permissions, what other shoddy code have they let slip by?
Actually, and I'll probably get flamed for saying this, you'd be surprised how many have bought the "you just can't infect a Mac!" meme. I got called into an SMB a few years back, where the guy instead of listening to me and paying me to set up a sensible top to bottom least permission approach bought into the "can't infect a Mac!" meme and then was shocked! shocked I tell you, when he found out he got pwned thanks to one of his kids wanting to watch a naughty video and getting the DNS changer bug.
You see the problem is something we that have been in the trenches for quite awhile (I started with Win 3.x, what was that? 20 years ago?) sadly run into far too often, it is what I like to call "magical thinking". it is the "If I use product X I won't have to change my habits or anything, and I'll be unhackable" bullshit. Hell I remember when firewall resellers were pushing the "if you have a firewall you are invisible and untouchable!" and it was bullshit then and it is bullshit now.
NEWS FLASH...ALL OSes can be hacked, full stop. ALL OSes are extremely complex pieces of code, with interactions on top of interactions with third party code thrown in the mix just for shits and giggles. There is NO perfectly unhackable OS and if there was one that person could hire Bill Gates to shine his shoes. The last real legitimate gripe about Windows, the brain dead "hey lets run everyone as admin!" finally died hard with Vista, so frankly all OSes are on about the same footing, as in TFA it all comes down to what the malware writer thinks is profitable.
Think OSX is immune? Read TFA. Think Linux can't be pwned? Look at the Android malware or the KDE screensaver malware that spread awhile back or even this handy how to guide on writing Linux malware.
The ONLY solution is a top to bottom least permissions approach, not magical thinking. Least permissions and users not being so brain dead they actively help the malware writer is the ONLY solution.
As a final note let me give a recent example. I set up a box, had it locked down nicely, required password for admin, least permissions, yet it got pwned in under 45 days. Did I miss something? Nope, the user decided he just had to have Limewire, even though I told him not to, so he disabled the antivirus because it wouldn't in his words "shut up" and then promptly gave permissions to Limewire to do whatever it wanted. And boy did it, 60+ pieces of malware.
So in the end it doesn't matter what the OS, it doesn't matter what kind of permissions model you set up, if you have someone with admin rights that says "I want my emails from Melissa and you WILL let me have them!" then no matter what OS, you're screwed. An OS is only as good as the PEBKAC sitting in front of it.

Buy AMD! After they bought ATI they've been opening up the code so FOSS guys can have decent drivers and support chips as old as they want, and their desktop and laptop chips are nice, and the new APUs have low power usage and full 1080p hardware acceleration for just about every format.
After the Intel bribery and compiler rigging (which they are still doing last I checked BTW) and Nvidia trying to burn the living hell out of their customers for THEIR mistake in picking a bad solder, I've been strictly AMD+ATI in my personal life and in my shop and my customers couldn't be happier. The cheaper AMD chips means they can spend more on extras like more RAM or an SSD, and the Radeon chips make video smooth and make it trivial to hook up even the little netbooks to a nice widescreen and have a great picture.
Sadly voting with our quickly devaluating dollars is pretty much all we have left in this country, as both parties are so heavily corrupted that they don't even pretend to serve anyone but their corporate masters anymore, and the courts from SCOTUS on down have made it clear the country is BY the corps and FOR the corps and fuck you peasant scum. So the only way we have to fight back against douchebaggery like this is to quit buying their products and hopefully start the corp into a freefall death spiral. Many of these corps have so many debts that a couple of bad quarters is all it will take, so vote with your dollars and tell your friends/customers/families to do the same. It is all we have left now really.
The problem was they used a defective solder on the GPUs, so heat cycling caused the solder joints to fail, which in your description would be the "WTF my screen is black!". I would sue if I were one stuck with the machine, as well as sue the OEM, since many like HP tried to "fix" the problem by simply sending a patch designed to max out the fans (causing them to burn through the battery and wear out quicker) in the hopes that the machine would survive long enough to go out of warranty so they could flip the bird to customers.
I hope this has taught those that by Nvidia a valuable lesson: don't buy from total douchebags. I was a life long Intel+Nvidia man but after the bribery and compiler rigging came out on the Intel side, and Nvidia trying to dump bad GPUs in the channel and screw customers with bumpgate I'm strictly AMD+ATI for me and my shop. The only way these corps learn is by watching their sales plummet, as we can see in TFA the courts are now bought and paid for.

Be careful what you wish for! I'm trying to switch to Chromium from FF because the memory hogging and CPU spiking in FF 4 is just nuts, but the spelling checker in Chromium based (so far I've tried Chromium and Dragon) is just awful! It seems like no matter how close I get to spelling the actual word it guesses a ton of things NONE of which are even close!

You know, I actually had a discussion with my friend over that very idea, and he said there is a simple reason why they haven't (and probably never will) make a deal with one of them. As he put it "The mob guy you can set up with a little business and you have about a 50/50 chance to get him to go straight (especially if there is a contract out on him) but with the pedo he will fuck little kids no matter what you do."
So I can see his point on why making a deal to get in the ring won't work, as the one that signs the deal will have committed political suicide. Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but I'm seeing the memory problem as well. I have 1.5Gb of RAM in this nettop and FF after 4 or 5 hours will suck down all 1.5Gb and cause the machine to start swapping like mad. Now I shut down tabs when I'm not using them, and if I have more than 4 open it is incredibly rare. FF just doesn't seem to give memory back when you close a tab, at least not the full amount it took, so with every tab you seem to lose a little more memory. This is on XP SP3 BTW in case anyone is wondering.
And WTF is with the CPU usage? If you are on XP download the free version of Anvir task manager and have it run in the tray while you are using FF. I have a grand total of three tabs open and I can literally watch FF climb on CPU usage with every stroke of the keyboard and if I type fast enough I can spike the hell out of it, just by typing text in a text box? WTF? It is a text box WTF is it doing?
Again do I know WHY FF is doing that? Nope, don't have a clue as to why, all I know is Chromium based like Dragon do NOT do that while having the same features, so I have a feeling I'm gonna be saying goodbye to FF. I shouldn't have to have a fricking dual core just to type in a bloody text box!!
Hey there is NOTHING wrong with a machine that old as long as you don't starve it like in TFA. I keep a socket 478 2.8Ghz as a spare in case a customer needs a box while their PC is being worked on, but unlike TFA it has 1.5Gb of RAM, so it is actually a pleasant machine for web surfing and office work.
Hell I'm typing this on a circa 2005 Sempron 1.8Ghz that I use as a nettop and with Comodo Dragon for a browser and 1.5Gb of RAM it is a nice experience. Sure beats risking my quad when it is storming out.
So I'd say the problem is NOT the box, it is the fact they never bothered to throw a stick of RAM in the thing. I bet if he'd just politely ask IT they probably got a stick box just like me and they just haven't had the time to add some to the thing. I bet if he explained he knows how to install a RAM stick and simply asks for one (bonus points if he can name off the size and speed he needs) then he'll most likely get handed one. Most of the time if you don't be an ass to the IT guy he'll be straight with you. After all he is just trying to get through his day same as you.
I've had FF hit over 1.5Gb RAM after around 6 to 10 hours, even though I close tabs and only have on average 5 open. Do I know why FF does that? Nope, but I do know that Chromium based (Comodo Dragon) don't do that, so that is why I've been switching. I just fired up FF 4 to type this out and I can literally watch the CPU usage go up as I type. If I type fast enough I can even hit over 60% on the 1.8Ghz Sempron I use for a low power nettop. Hell just sitting here doing nothing it is using 24% CPU, that's just nuts. I also have been running it less than 5 minutes with 3 tabs open and am already over 300Mb, and we are talking about /. set to classic mode. Again just nuts.
So yeah, it ain't just him. Since FF 3.6.x things have been going downhill for me on the low power machines, and FF 4 is nearly unusable. Not using any weird extensions either, just ABP, NoScript, and ForecastFox.
He may be maxed out, you'd be surprised how many of those old Dell and Compaq boxes couldn't hold squat with regards to RAM.
As for TFQ try Kmeleon CCF ME looks like chrome, Gecko engine but lower RAM since it uses Windows native APIs.
