Also OEMs have likewise spent millions (which they wouldn't have had to if Linus wasn't a douche and would allow a hardware ABI which everyone else has had FOR OVER A DECADE) to make sure drivers are solid and stable.

It reminds me of an old story I read about the USSR in Afghanistan. Well what happened is soon after vehicles and planes started crashing because the brakes would fail, even brand new vehicles would have the brakes just go out. When they investigated it turned out the junkies were drinking brake fluid sifted through white bread to get high.

I just got finished cleaning one of these scareware infections where the user uninstalled their working AV to install the malware. Now why would they do that you say? Simple, they saw the number of "infections" reported on the fake scareware page and decided their good AV must not be working (since it wasn't reporting the non existent viruses) and therefor " must have gone bad" like cheese in the fridge and tossed it to install the malware.

Now show me ANY OS that would protect the system from that level of stupid, I dare you. You can't because idiot proofing will always be defeated by the bigger idiot. For Linux here is a nice trick, how to write a Linux virus in 5 easy steps that uses nothing but bog standard social engineering. hell it doesn't even need root to be able to do all the things your average malware writer wants to accomplish. And we know this works because they used similar methods in the KDELook attack, where thousands of KDE users were infected by fake screensavers that were actually malware. Sound familiar?

So it is real simple folks, if the user has install rights then they have the ability to screw themselves, full stop. You can try education, making them jump through hoops like UAC or root prompts, it doesn't matter. it is the classic dancing bunnies problem where if the user WANTS the malware (and that is what it all boils down to, the malware uses fear or social engineering to convince the user they want to install the malware, a classic con game) then by God they're gonna get that malware whether you like it or not!

So in the end you do what you can, make sure they have a backup solution, and be ready to clean up the messes when they happen. it reminds me of how an old Linux admin of mine ended up being threatened with firing and had to show up before the head of the regional office because the PHB over him was demanding he allow the PHB's emails from Melissa without interference. In the end there is only so much you can do, you just can't knock the stupid out of some folks.

At the bottom most level was DOS, which worked not only as a boot loader, but was also used for some file operations, then you had the drivers, then the VxD virtual device driver class, then the OS, and THEN the apps.

The problem, and the reason why apps such as NS 4 could BSOD the OS, was a little thing known as GDI, or graphics document interface. You see GDI on Win9X could only use a MAXIMUM of 1Mb (the old DOS limit) and anything over that? Welcome to badness as the machine choked and died, since it couldn't actually draw anymore objects and the buffers would overflow.

So I'm sorry Drinkypoo, while your posts are usually on the ball you missed the mark this case. Now on the NT arch you are talking a different ball of wax, and Windows after XP is damned near impossible to BSOD (in fact in the 4 years since Win Vista I've seen exactly ONE BSOD, and that was a customer with a dying RAM module) but when NS 4 was released the dominant OS by far was Win9X, hell most machines wouldn't even run WinNT because there weren't drivers for anything other than workstations, and Linux was like a bad joke, you needed serious hacking skills to get it to even run in those days.

So I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Hell you can see it yourself, just install Win9X (95-98 will do, WinME doesn't rely on DOS as much and thus will take a LITTLE more abuse, not much though) and fire up NS 4 and start opening pages. Use the system resource meter to watch GDI usage and you'll find on any page more complex than black text it'll slamm the shit out of GDI. Once you reach the limit it is buffer overflow and bye bye baby. This was just one of a string of problems that ultimately killed NS as a company. Myself and many other would have kept buying the product if they'd have made a usable offering, but by the time they got around to making a functional product the "designed for IE" phase was in full swing and NS was dead.

The data lost in TFA was less than 300Gb total, that would have been trivial to back up to a nice cheap WD Essentials while they were uploading it "just in case". this of course wouldn't let the ISP off the hook, but they wouldn't have lost an entire seasons worth of work either.

In this day and age where you can often pick up 2Tb externals for just $80 having no on premises backups to me just seems like begging for trouble. I've found most small businesses can easily back up the entire data of the business in 1Tb with space left over, and a pair of them is less than $180. Why do they even take the risk? For me these WD drives have been an easy sell, as nobody wants to think about having to try to deal with major data loss. Better safe than sorry, especially when the costs are so trivial to be safe.

And this coming from poor wittle APK, also know as "Petey, the idiot HOPES file guy"? As in you HOPES that one of the 300,000+ constantly changing array of websites that are infected doesn't happen to be the one you visit today? Or that you HOPES that nobody notices after repeatedly being asked you have FAILED to show even the tiniest shred of mathematical proof that your magical woobie can scale? That you HOPES nobody notices your only "proof" is anecdotes, often by your own sock puppets like Kingsjester?

If there is ANYONE that should be LOLing it is me, for pointing out there are still morons that believe 16Mb HOPES files can do anything but block ads since ad servers are...what do you call it...oh yeah STATIC, just like your HOPES file, but really you are just kinda pathetic. You're like the idiot that just keeps hanging onto that three years out of date copy of Norton, because he is just so damned sure it still works, only the Norton guy is actually better protected than you are, since it did used to work in the past 5 years.

So please, keep posting APK, I do so enjoy pointing out the total uber fail of your magical woobie so. I also personally consider it a public service to point people to solutions that actually work instead of relying on magical woobies and anecdotes. And of course bitch slapping your retarded ass around is also quite fun, even if it is too easy!
