Linux "security" is security by obscurity, simple as that. The "many eyes" myth was proven false by Heartbleed which sat there for fricking years without being caught, the ONLY advantage having the source gets you is the ability to keep old versions alive after the devs move on....that's it,that's all. Hell by the time one was to do even a piss poor code audit of even a tenth of a single distro release it would have been abandoned for 5+ NEW releases that your audit wouldn't cover, see how Ubuntu is on track to have 20 mainstream releases in the same support window as Win 7 for example.
Source code isn't magic and considering how many thousands of people work on the code that goes into a single distro sticking a state actor in the mix would be trivial if the state desired it.
Imaginary problems kill Windows...ahh a classic, haven't gotten that one in a few years, thanks. And if you think MY customers won't call if they get a BSOD? BWA HA HA HA HA HA..damn, thanks again friend! Hell I am the only guy in the county that does house calls...do you have ANY idea how in demand that makes me? If they have ANY problem, anything at all, they can pick up the phone and have me fix it on the spot. Believe me if they were seeing BSODs? My dance card would be full!
the other poster says its HP crap...wow, color me surprised, ever since they bought ComPuke their quality has gone to shit, its the same with Seagate buying Maxtor. This is why I sell Asus lappys and build my own desktops, because I don't have a bit of problem with buying/building quality but you go with them $299 HP specials? yeah...good luck with that.
Dude have EVER used a Geode CPU? Its about the same as an early Pentium 2, you might as wel get a Rpi if you wanna go that route. That thing will be lucky if it don't get bogged down when the network is busy, mine can simply wake parked cores and keep flowing while doing multiple roles like again media server, NAS, backup server, mail server. Sure yours is lower power because it can't do much and I wouldn't be surprised if its not only weaker but costs MORE than mine because those uber-niche CPUs tend to be high dollar.
I serve a city of over 15k so i think my anecdotes are a little more weighted than your single office of 11 employees. I also have headlines on my side since, just as i said, even Apple sales are down and I would argue the why is obvious, those that want one already have one and see NO point in getting another because it either 1.- Does what they need it to, since I have found tablet users needs do NOT require much in the way of hardware, or just as likely 2.- its gathering dust somewhere because they can't find a good use for it.
Not to long ago i thought I would die laughing as i saw a hipster chick struggling to drive a shopping cart while using an iPad as a grocery list and I called out "trying to justify that several hundred you spent on that thing aren't ya?" and the look of anger mixed with foolishness told me I nailed it. Tablets are good for a few niches...medical, where its "check the box and sign your name" forms, inventory management, and of course being a glorified video player. Those jobs it does quite well, problem is not a whole lot of the public requires those jobs very often, even the video player doesn't get used much as they are either at home where there is a big screen or out where they are busy doing other things. But at the end of the day numbers don't lie and even Apple is seeing slumping sales because like the netbook its a fad.
If he had a Linux partition he has dealt with so many fucked drivers thanks to Torvalds shittastic driver model (which no other OS on the planet uses, its THAT good) that he'd have no problem diagnosing the Windows driver problem and fixing it so...hey what do you know, Linux IS good for something after all!
Seriously between last known good config and being able to run system restore off the DVD this is really not a problem. BTW anybody know what weird fucked up hardware combo is causing this? Because I got hundreds of Win 7 systems in the field and haven't heard a peep from a single customer about BSODs, I also updated all the systems in the shop, again no BSODs, so it has to be some funky as hell hardware if I don't have any of 'em.
But I just have to laugh because what the average Linux user deals with every distro release (go to their forums sometime right after release, its really funny) is so rare on the Windows side it makes front page news when it happens. IRL its as rare as hens teeth, thanks to a solid driver model with BC and the ability to silently restart drivers if one hangs Windows has never been more stable and solid. I almost wish the FOSSie delusion of Windows still being like Win9X was real, there are times in the shop I feel like the Maytag repairman in the commercials, sitting there waiting for repair calls that never come.

I want to see it upgrade at least twice in place without crapping on its own drivers before I'll be impressed.
OOTB most of the so called "mainstream" distros look real nice, its the second you have to upgrade them to continue getting security updates that they shit themselves and fall apart. as just an example if you had installed ubuntu at the same time that Windows 7 came out you would have had to install a grand total of 1 service pack and the monthly updates on 7, all of which can be done automatically and after which you would have a perfectly working system. To do the same with Ubuntu using mainstream (because Canonical says that LTS is NOT for home users, its for businesses and they discourage anybody but businesses from using LTS) you would have had EIGHT, count 'em eight, upgrades, just to keep the system current with patches.
This is why myself and the other retailers don't carry Linux, because the drivers get shit on during upgrade and when you figure up how much time we'd have to waste dealing with forum hunts and Googling for fixes just to keep the damned drivers functional Windows ends up being the cheaper solution by far. So while this version of Linux LOOKS beautiful I can say the same about Mint and Ubuntu and PCLOS, but if I can't hand a new system to a customer and know that in 5 years that system will STILL be running without me having to fix the damn thing every time another release gets crapped out? Then I'm sorry but its just not a suitable replacement for Windows or OSX, both of which will continue running and getting patches for years.
Because as I have been saying for years ARM just doesn't scale? The problem with ARM is while you can run it at insanely low wattage the problem is that the instructions per clock is likewise very low and unlike X86 it just doesn't scale up with power usage. this is why Samsung is up to 6 cores and Nvidia 5, because when you try to speed up the clock on ARM beyond a certain point it blows the power budget without giving enough of an IPC boost to be worth the increased power use.
As I have said for years it'll be easier for AMD and Intel to scale down than it will be for ARM to scale up because both companies already have such a high IPC. Between the new Jaguar cores at AMD and Broadwell and the latest Atom chips at Intel it is looking like by second quarter of next year the only thing ARM will have going for it is price. I predict ARM will end up in devices where price is king, your ultra cheap tablets, STBs, and industrial applications while X86 ends up taking a large chunk of the mid and high range.
Frankly Intel is the only one "chasing the rabbit" over ever smaller NM so I'd like to see data showing how many of these are crap off the line and how bad the leakage is.
Of course the thing that scares the living hell out of Intel, that any PC shop guy will tell you, is that the X86 chip went from "good enough but just barely" to "so insanely overpowered you'll never use half of it" several years back. Both my desktop and laptop are on 45nm and frankly I have so many cycles to spare now it isn't even funny, so what good would 14nm do me? Add another 30 minutes to the battery? My netbook already gets over 6 hours on a new battery which is honestly 3 and a half hours more than I need, and on the desktop the hexacore spends more time with half the cores parked than not simply because I can't come up with enough work to feed it.
Finally Intel is about a year and a half too late as from the trenches I can tell ya the whole tablet craze? Yeah its dying out, even Apple's numbers are going down because the race to the bottom has made tablets so cheap everybody and their cat and their cat's squeaky toy all have tablets now and most of 'em? gathering dust. I don't know how many customers I've had that just HAD to have a tablet that ended up coming back to me and saying "You were right, I was wrong, thanks for selling me a cheap tablet so I didn't spend a ton on something I didn't hardly use" because they get 'em home and find out the laptop has more utility on the road while at home the desktop has more utility so they end up being used for what I call the "WTF is his name?" Wiki searches and...they find out that android or iPhone in their pocket does that just as well so...yeah. Not really much of a point in 'em.
Such as banging underage girls while ranting for hours how bath salts give you massive boners, followed by having to bribe his way out of a murder charge that, and lets be honest here folks, there was more than enough circumstantial evidence to be fairly certain he'd be on trial now if it happened here, its really no surprise he is beating the privacy drum. I wonder if he sent something incriminating through Gmail and is now spooked?
If you are really worried about spying pretty much the only safe route anymore is DIY. it isn't nearly as cheap as a COTS but can be done quite affordable and the system you end up with will be a HELL of a lot more capable and will be able to do multiple jobs such as backup server, NAS, mail server, etc.
If a customer were to come to me asking for one to be built right now I would grab one of those VCR style cases which can be had for pretty cheap, slap a socket AM1 board (since you can grab one of those with both PCI and PCIe slots) with the low end Athlon quad (can be had for a dirt cheap $44) and slap a GB card on the PCIe along with a nice WiFi card. This system only uses around 30w max and for daily running usually hovers around 10w-15w and would give you not only a system capable of being a damned good router but it would also be a great NAS and/or media server.
I have built a few of these and they are great little units, ULV so running silent is insanely easy, enough power to do most tasks with cycles to spare, easy to tweak, and if you are into FOSS the fact that AMD has been opening up their specs and docs along with paying devs to help speed up development of the FOSS drivers should make it a no brainer, especially now that Intel has been calling on PowerVR more and more for their GPUs. All in all if you want a router that can do even more than the great WRT line that would probably be the best bet.
What I want to know is Comcast gonna pay for the broken door, any pain and suffering as you are thrown to the ground and handcuffed, along with the loss of equipment and lawyer fees because the cops kick down your door after some perv downloads CP on your connection?
Because if they aren't they could screw right off! We have seen time and time again the cops charging in based solely on an IP address and it seems like Comcast wants the benefit of your connection without the responsibility.
Bullshit, you can spin all you want but you can't use a bullshit "context" excuse when it came to Nvidia. he named a company that has been trying to support Linux, despite Xorg being a steaming pile, and gave them the bird, again like a 14 year old brat...NO EXCUSE for such behavior.
Without even looking at this thing I bet its the exact same fails that Sony always pulls, proprietary formats, making everything go through Sony, overpriced hardware...correct?
Sony has been throwing away killer tech products going all the way back to the Minidisc, which at the time had several orders of magnitude more storage than any MP3 player could muster but because Sony tried to lock everything down to the 50th power so that all discs would go through or from Sony nobody would support or put out content on the thing and it became totally worthless. I mean they owned the PMP market at the time with Walkman, they threw the market away. So I have NO doubt they tried to force everything through a poorly supported with lousy selection market, tried to screw anybody who offered to support the thing, and pissed it all away....standard Sony.
BTW did it push a format nobody else used? That is also standard Sony, from memorystick to ATRAC there is nothing Sony loves more than their own format that nobody else will touch or support....LOL yep, nailed it, yet another format nobody else used LOL.
Riiight, because LJN didn't exist on the NES, there weren't games like Friday the 13th and Dark Tower on the NES. I think there is somebody you ought to meet, seeing as how he makes his living reviewing shitty NES games.
Oh and just FYI, from somebody that was actually working in retail during the crash? The "prevailing wisdom" is a big steaming pile of horseshit. gather around childrens and let this old greybeard tell ya what REALLY caused the crash!
Ya see little childrens the industry had back then what was called a "stock and swap" business model going and here is how it worked...you are a retailer, and the distributor wants you to sell games, but you don't know anything about games and are leery...what to do? "Simple" says Mr Distributor, "all you have to do is hand me any unsold games and I'll give you brand NEW games in return until they DO sell, you can't lose!"....Now I bet all you can see the big gaping flaw in this model, can't you kids? By taking out any risk it caused retailers to overstock to the extreme because it was like money in the bank, right? Every one that doesn't sell will be replaced for a new title until it sells and with each sale I make a nice profit so I should have a TON of games so I can have a TON of profits...yay!
And THIS boys and girls NOT the Atarti case, is what caused the crash. Even at the little Magic Mart I was working part time at in the middle of a town with only 10k people at the time there was 7 different game systems and over 1000 titles because it was like money in the bank, right? Well the distributors started to take any game for any system made by any company just to get new products they could flip, the markets became completely saturated with systems and games and all it took was a couple of the middlemen to go under for the whole thing to collapse. the retailers panicked when they couldn't just turn in old carts and systems for new, started dumping product in the channel trying to get out, and the whole thing went to shit.
So there it is boys and girls, the same thing that caused so many other crashes, gambling in the market caused by shady systems and promises of easy money without risk. By the middle of 84 I was walking out of Magic Mart with over a thousand bucks worth of games and systems for my $50 check and needless to say I wasn't buying any full price games when I was getting 4 Coleco games for a buck or 10 Atari which just made the few companies left cash starved as their new product had to compete with 10c games.....is it any wonder so many went tits up?
Yeah which is why the PC died in the 80s, it being open killed any reason to develop for it...oh wait...hell if anything I'd say being open is what has caused the indie game explosion, with anybody with a really good idea (and a little help from kickstarter) coming out with completely new takes on traditional gaming.
It AIN'T the men, its the stupid as hell clothing industry thinking any guy besides metrosexuals give a rat's ass about that. I don't know how many guys I've talked to the past few years that are ROYALLY PISSED that they can't just go into a store and grab a pair of size whatever and know it'll fit. We don't care if you call it a 37 or an ummagumma just STICK TO IT so we can just walk in and buy a pair of damned pants without having to try shit on like the girls...is that REALLY so much to ask for?
As for TFA? The correct answer is "we don't know shit, it'll probably change, but for now the number pulled out our collective asses is". hell they can't even make the math work without "dark" this and "dark" that which should automatically be replaced with a little stick figure shrugging its shoulders. I think the only thing we can truly say for certain is how things work in this one little teeny tiny itsy bitsy area, anything else? Its just wild guesses with a LOT of question marks in there.
Calling someone retarded is no less insulting than screaming nigger or faggot at them...are you telling me that is acceptable? or how about Linus flipping the bird to a major manufacturer that a LARGE part of the community REQUIRES to do their jobs? What if Nvidia said "ya know what? Fuck you Torvalds, from now on? They can buy OSX or Windows" and called it a day?
he is not only giving FOSS a bad name, which is pretty bad considering what RMS did in public left Torvalds pretty much the ONLY face of FOSS that didn't look like a loon, but he is also giving every stereotype of IT, that IT is full of maladjusted man children that behave like 14 year old punks, credence. We get enough of that shit without Linus acting like a fucking prima donna, thx.
Notice I got modded down for daring to say this type of behavior is NEVER excusable, I don't care if its from Cook or Ballmer or Torvalds you should act like a PROFESSIONAL, not a spoiled brat halo player. And I'm sorry but cursing anybody out in public, along with flipping the bird to companies who don't do to suit him? He's acting like a brat NOT the head of such a large important project. and the fact that so many will put up with this prima donna behavior and actually make excuses for it? Just shows there IS A REASON why IT has such a bad name.
The problem is this....EA is known for killing MP as soon as a title leaves top tier, usually within a year or two max. this means these games will be "pre-crippled" so that half the fun of a sports title, kicking your friend's ass, will already be removed.
Still for those that made the mistake of buying an Xbone that might be a good deal. For us PC gamers that 30 bucks a year would get you a dozen or more games from the Humble Bundles or Steam sales we could keep forever, of course the guys into EA sports will already have the latest Madden so won't care and...wait who is this supposed to appeal to anyway? Sports guys will already have the sports games, shooter guys generally don't play sports and have the latest shooters (because the MP dies the second a new one comes out), I'm sensing a case of "here is some old shit we can't sell so what do we do with it?" fail coming on.
Torvalds has shown repeatedly he has ZERO professionalism and the fact that so many in the FOSS community make excuses for his childish amateur hour behavior is truly sad. There is NO EXCUSE for acting like a spoiled rotten 14 year old Halo player and the fact that Torvalds can continue acting this childish and get away with it is a pretty damning commentary on the Linux community and its support of diva behavior.
I thought that it was pretty easy to crack TOR, just run a bunch of exit nodes and suck up the data. Sure it doesn't let you target a specific individual but its governments we are talking about here, where the typical goal isn't to get ALL the people, just enough that you are seriously rolling the dice if you try thus causing a nice chilling effect.
Windows 8.1, they are gonna be one of the first laptops to take advantage of the "Free Windows under 10 inches" rule MSFT recently enacted, which means it should be trivial to "downgrade" to Win 7 if you want. I think I read about them on Windows Insider but in any case they are due either late Sept or early Oct but I would put my money on early Sept if possible to grab the back to school sales.
I think the $99 netbooks that are gonna be coming out this fall should just suck up these low end sales like a sponge. After all the new Atom and Jaguar chips are crazy powerful and at 8 inches it'll be just perfect for kids sticking into backpacks. i already have a dozen customers that have put off getting their kids a tablet to get one of these new netbooks and I have a feeling that without having the lowest cost these ChromeOS sales are gonna dry up, same goes for the low end tablets.
After all why would you buy a Chromebook that ONLY works on the net when you could have a netbook that runs all the apps a Chromebook can run AND run offline as well? Oh and the Linux guys should love 'em as both Intel and AMD have been pretty good about opening up the APUs so it should be a dirt cheap way to have a pocket Linux lappy.
I think you missed his point, his point is the old DOS game is wrapped in a Windows installer that often won't run on the platform he is using and there is NO way to just download the original files WITHOUT the installer which would allow him to trivially get it running in Linux.
While I have never been a fan of Linux I agree that is stupid for multiple reasons, not only does it make his ability to buy and use these games much harder (thus making it more likely he and those on his platform won't buy, thus hurting sales) but there are also plenty of DOS fans that use integrated launchers like D-Fend that could also use the raw files so they can just drop them into their custom DOSBox and call it a day. Considering you get the files AFTER running the Windows installer i see no reason in not just offering the option to download the game installer free.
This reminds me of the stupid 2K Humble Bundle I bought last week, the whole reason i bought it was "yay they have a GFWL DRM free version of Bioshock 1, no more needing a pirate version of a game I bought or dealing with GFWL removal crap, yay!" only to find that while yes their version was 100% DRM free it did NOT support torrenting, ONLY a direct download that was glitchy as hell and which wouldn't work with download managers....argh! I finally had to fire up 32bit IE of all things as that was the only browser that seemed to play nice with their download. If its already DRM free why not give me the choice of torrent?
how to write a Linux virus in 5 easy steps using the exact same tricks used to infect Windows. Say that is only hypothetical? How about some real world pwning like kernel.org and its not a fluke by any means. Oh and what happens when the "secure" Linux kernel gets used by a target worth hitting? A million plus infected systems that is what.
Linux "security" is security by obscurity, simple as that.
