Oh I have been singing the praises of the AM1, its a fucking AWESOME chip! I mean a replaceable ULV that does 1080p easily AND is the same chip used in the PS4 AND only uses 25w WHILE having boards that offer options like having multiple PCIe and even a PCI slot and the whole setup can be had for less than $100? Well hell what's not to like!
And I put an E350 Bobcat against a Pentium D805 and even having over 1GHz speed difference it was a joke, that little $60 board just curbstomped that 805. it was then when I really realized how truly shit the P4 design was, because when the weakest Bobcat can beat one of their best duals you know its a garbage design.
Actually the P4 would have been fine if they could have reached the clocks they predicted (10GHz+) but the pipes ended up so damned long every cache miss was like slamming on the brakes, not to mention the truly insane amounts of heat the last P4s belched out.
This is why I tell folks to toss if they have a P4 as while an Athlon of the same age is still useful the amount of heat belched out by Prescott and Cedar Mill P4s is just nuts. At the shop I've been replacing P4s with E350s and recently socket AM1s and even those bottom of the line netbook chips still feel faster than the P4 while putting out practically zero heat out the back. You don't realize how badly the cache misses slow the chip until you put an Athlon 64 or first gen Core Solo against the high clocked Pentium Ds, even at double the clocks they just feel dog slow.

Frankly I wouldn't even put XP in their top OSes, by SP2 it was okay, never great, and while SP3 did have speed improvements it made up for that with patch cruft. If I were to rank their top OSes it would be Win 7, Win XP X64 (which was IRL Win 2K3 workstation), Win 2K, and then it would be a coin flip between Vista and WinXP 32bit as both of them required SPs to become usable and both OOTB sucked the big wet titty.
As for win 9? If the rumors are true that there will be NO local login (so they can datamine you, try to sell you shit with the appstore, and do a dozen "are you a dirty pirate?" checks a day) then I figure it wil be another VistaBomb, but if they just give us Win 7 with the under the hood features of win 8.x like better SSD support and WIM? Then it will be a hit. What I can't believe is that they compare this weak sauce single core to a NUC, it'd be like comparing a Pinto to a Porsche as they really aren't even in the same class.
If you want something crazy affordable to compare to a NUC then check out the new AMD AM1 Jaguar kits, like this you can swap CPUs but unlike this the smallest you can get is a dual core APU while for $100 you can have the quad Athlon APU and all the chips are based on the same Jaguar chips they use in the PS4 and XBone. I've built both the Sempron dual and Athlon quad and I have to say...they are fricking great! The Sempron makes a great ULV server or basic netbox while the quad makes for a decent desktop or really nice media tank. The new APUs have hardware acceleration for all the popular video formats and they are crazy low power draw so making silent systems with them is pretty trivial. the only caveat is get the faster RAM as with APUs the RAM speed makes a difference when it comes to graphics performance but other than that they are great for DIY systems on the cheap.
But units like the NUC and AM1 are why I think the days of ARM being used on anything but ultra cheapo Chinese crap are numbered, as both AMD and Intel are dipping into single digit power draw territory while having an IPC that just curbstomps ARM. I've said it before and it looks like time is proving me right, you just can't scale up ARM without blowing the power budget while both AMD and Intel are getting better with each rev on power while still keeping a huge IPC lead. If this trend continues there just won't be a point in using ARM for anything but bargain basement as they just won't have the performance to compete with AMD, much less Intel.

There is a series on YouTube, "Strange Weapons of WWII" that has one for the Allies, one for Japan, one for the Nazies, and one for the USSR that has a LOT more detail than the flimsy Wiki article if you are interested. The Russians had a rocket fighter, the Japanese a much better version of the ME163 and a backwards wing fighter, and of course the nazis were always coming up with weird weapons, and on the Allies it has Churchill and the Ice Carrier as well as the flapjack, including the first tests of the wing using remote control models. Its a pretty good series if you like weird weapons.
Nothing wrong with GOTY as it usually just means it is all the expansion packs prerolled into the game and GOTY sounds better than "For all that passed on it here is the game and all the expansions at one low price!" when it comes to marketing. The same goes for HD remasters when they are REALLY a remastering of an old game NOT when its just last year's game with a few new textures.
As far as the others? I honestly can't tell by the title WTF they are and I would say THAT is the problem, if somebody who has been playing PC games since the early 90s can't tell WTF it is you are selling? Then you should work on your labeling.
Not quite steampunk but I'm shocked they didn't have the "flying pancake" of WWII as that was impressive, a plane that could lift off almost straight up with just a gentle breeze yet could flip and turn like a dogfighter and was predicted to go crazy fast for a prop fighter. What killed it was the fact that it was designed at a time when the US thought it wouldn't have much in the way of carriers and by the time it was ready we had a ton of carriers and jets were on the way so nobody saw a use in a plane that could take off from anywhere.
But not enough to make the several billion required to go down to 12nm, much less 5nm economically viable. For everybody else the chips blew past good enough to insanely overpowered.
Hell even a multitasker like me is finding it harder and harder to come up with a reason to buy a new unit. My netbook is from 2009 and uses one of the weakest chips you can use (the AMD E350) yet it does 1080p over HDMI, gets 4 hours plus on a 5 year old battery, so why buy a new one when the previous chips let me do whatever I want?

Take what I'm typing on as an example, its an HP Pro 3000 which since it came with Vista (which I of course upgraded to Win 7, putting 32bit Vista on a PC with 4GB? WTH HP?) I would date it around 07-08. It has a Pentium Dual at 2.7Ghz, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD....how many home users are actually gonna be able to max this out? I pound the shit out of this machine, downloading drivers and burning discs and yanking data off of memory cards, often at the same time, and it just purrs, so why buy a new one? Now we are seeing the same thing with ARM, my dad recently picked up a tablet I recommended which has 4 cores, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage, final cost? $140 shipped, the odds that he will be able to max it out? pretty much zero. this thing has enough power it can easily drive his widescreen TV over HDMI, surf, chat, and gets great battery life...what motivation does he have to buy a new one?
Lets face it X86 systems have become like washers and dryers, no need to get a new before the old one dies. Hell this is even true for gamers, my gaming PC at home is fricking 5 years old now which is ancient history in the PC world yet with a hexacore, 8GB of RAM, and 3TB of HDD space the only thing I've had to do since buying it is upgrade my GPU. That's it, that is all I've had to do and I'm playing Bioshock Infinite and Far Cry 3 and anything else i want to play with plenty of bling and decent framerates. We are seeing X86 play out on fast forward with ARM now going up to octocore because MHz bumps are getting harder to do without blowing the power budget, there is just no reason to buy before the current one dies which I'm sure is scarier than trying to hit 14nm to Intel and TSMC.

Dude how fricking OLD is your PC? Because my youngest games just fine and his hardware is nowhere near cutting edge.
Take one $45 Asrock motherboard, add one Athlon X3 (easily found in the $45 range online) and use ACC to unlock the fourth core and voila! A 3.3Ghz quad. Throw in 6GB (we lucked into a 2GB chip cheap after ordering the 4GB, hence the odd amount), a 1TB HDD (gotten for $40 off of Tiger on sale) an HD7790 for $87 and a cheap case and there ya go, a PC that will play most games at an acceptable framerate that won't break the bank. Just choose your OS (I prefer Win 7, but I hear some like 8.1) and go to town. As a nice bonus he has plenty of room to upgrade down the line as the board will take 16GB of RAM, an octocore CPU, it even has crossfire should he want to pick up another HD7790 down the line.
But if your PC was made in the last...ohhh...say 6 years? Unless its a Worst Buy Special or a craptop you really shouldn't have any problems throwing in a few parts and gaming just fine.

There is a series on YouTube, "Strange Weapons of WWII" that has one for the Allies, one for Japan, one for the Nazies, and one for the USSR that has a LOT more detail than the flimsy Wiki article if you are interested. The Russians had a rocket fighter, the Japanese a much better version of the ME163 and a backwards wing fighter, and of course the nazis were always coming up with weird weapons, and on the Allies it has Churchill and the Ice Carrier as well as the flapjack, including the first tests of the wing using remote control models. Its a pretty good series if you like weird weapons.
Nothing wrong with GOTY as it usually just means it is all the expansion packs prerolled into the game and GOTY sounds better than "For all that passed on it here is the game and all the expansions at one low price!" when it comes to marketing. The same goes for HD remasters when they are REALLY a remastering of an old game NOT when its just last year's game with a few new textures.
As far as the others? I honestly can't tell by the title WTF they are and I would say THAT is the problem, if somebody who has been playing PC games since the early 90s can't tell WTF it is you are selling? Then you should work on your labeling.
Not quite steampunk but I'm shocked they didn't have the "flying pancake" of WWII as that was impressive, a plane that could lift off almost straight up with just a gentle breeze yet could flip and turn like a dogfighter and was predicted to go crazy fast for a prop fighter. What killed it was the fact that it was designed at a time when the US thought it wouldn't have much in the way of carriers and by the time it was ready we had a ton of carriers and jets were on the way so nobody saw a use in a plane that could take off from anywhere.
But not enough to make the several billion required to go down to 12nm, much less 5nm economically viable. For everybody else the chips blew past good enough to insanely overpowered.
Hell even a multitasker like me is finding it harder and harder to come up with a reason to buy a new unit. My netbook is from 2009 and uses one of the weakest chips you can use (the AMD E350) yet it does 1080p over HDMI, gets 4 hours plus on a 5 year old battery, so why buy a new one when the previous chips let me do whatever I want?
Can someone explain to me in plain English how the laws of physics are supposed to have worked some of the time but not all the time? because I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how the speed of light is supposed to be the ultimate speed limit yet for their big bang theory to work you have the time immediately following the bang having this FTL expansion?
And this little tidbit I'm sure has CPU OEMs scared....they passed "good enough" on their designs and went so far into "insanely overpowered" that consumers really have no reason to buy before the previous unit dies.
Take what I'm typing on as an example, its an HP Pro 3000 which since it came with Vista (which I of course upgraded to Win 7, putting 32bit Vista on a PC with 4GB? WTH HP?) I would date it around 07-08. It has a Pentium Dual at 2.7Ghz, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD....how many home users are actually gonna be able to max this out? I pound the shit out of this machine, downloading drivers and burning discs and yanking data off of memory cards, often at the same time, and it just purrs, so why buy a new one? Now we are seeing the same thing with ARM, my dad recently picked up a tablet I recommended which has 4 cores, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage, final cost? $140 shipped, the odds that he will be able to max it out? pretty much zero. this thing has enough power it can easily drive his widescreen TV over HDMI, surf, chat, and gets great battery life...what motivation does he have to buy a new one?
Lets face it X86 systems have become like washers and dryers, no need to get a new before the old one dies. Hell this is even true for gamers, my gaming PC at home is fricking 5 years old now which is ancient history in the PC world yet with a hexacore, 8GB of RAM, and 3TB of HDD space the only thing I've had to do since buying it is upgrade my GPU. That's it, that is all I've had to do and I'm playing Bioshock Infinite and Far Cry 3 and anything else i want to play with plenty of bling and decent framerates. We are seeing X86 play out on fast forward with ARM now going up to octocore because MHz bumps are getting harder to do without blowing the power budget, there is just no reason to buy before the current one dies which I'm sure is scarier than trying to hit 14nm to Intel and TSMC.

Go to any Chinamart site and you can pick up an ARM dual core desktop box for less than $50 USD and while they come with Android from what I understand most can run Debian as well so if you need an ARM box to do your coding on they really aren't hard to come by.
Bullshit as in 2009 a combination of onsite,offsite, and cloud backups was as common as dirt and in an org that size by any logic you want to use can and should be SOP, any less they are looking for an excuse to destroy data.

Dude how fricking OLD is your PC? Because my youngest games just fine and his hardware is nowhere near cutting edge.
Take one $45 Asrock motherboard, add one Athlon X3 (easily found in the $45 range online) and use ACC to unlock the fourth core and voila! A 3.3Ghz quad. Throw in 6GB (we lucked into a 2GB chip cheap after ordering the 4GB, hence the odd amount), a 1TB HDD (gotten for $40 off of Tiger on sale) an HD7790 for $87 and a cheap case and there ya go, a PC that will play most games at an acceptable framerate that won't break the bank. Just choose your OS (I prefer Win 7, but I hear some like 8.1) and go to town. As a nice bonus he has plenty of room to upgrade down the line as the board will take 16GB of RAM, an octocore CPU, it even has crossfire should he want to pick up another HD7790 down the line.
But if your PC was made in the last...ohhh...say 6 years? Unless its a Worst Buy Special or a craptop you really shouldn't have any problems throwing in a few parts and gaming just fine.
