It case you didn't get the memo the corps rule the governments now, so any and all measures to protect profits, especially from IP whose term limits have been made into "forever minus a single day" SHALL be employed.
I have to wonder if this isn't the reason why all empires fall and governments rarely survive more than a century or two, that an end result of massive corruption and wealth consolidation simply is unavoidable. Sadly I think we have it worse than ever before thanks to the net making it easy to transfer huge sums of money around the world in seconds, thus allowing the megacorps to unduly influence pretty much any country on the planet thanks to the mountains of money they sit upon.
Every time I hear of a government being a pitbull for the megacorps i am always reminded of these words, spoken by Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21 1864 "I see in the near future a crisis approaching; corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." Replace the republic with the name of any country and you have what we have now.
You mean a whole pushing 2 buttons and rebooting, which nearly every site shows you how to do complete with pictures? Not really a selling point there bud, and from the looks of it Moz is going for the "its all in the cloud!" fail which considering how much of a resource hog HTML V5 is is really a fricking BAD idea with a capital B, which is why Google doesn't use ChromeOS on their phones.
And I don't see anything you listed that can't be done on Android by going to Cyanogenmod or AreaRomQ or any of a dozen sites and just loading an image, hell I got a cheap as hell prepaid phone and AreaRomQ not only has an image for mine but I can even OC the chip if I want, stick any program in I want, do whatever I want to the thing. The only holdup from making the phone a true general purpose computer is the lack of generic drivers but MozPhone won't be able to solve that, the chip makers have everything so proprietary and cross licensed I'd argue there is no way in hell to make a 100% FOSS phone thanks to the driver issue.
But its not like you gotta take my word for it, you can get cheap Android phones starting at like $40 on Amazon so just grab one that has an image at AreaRomQ and go to town, do whatever you want.
And maybe YOU complete ignored my entire post which pointed out there were SEVERAL reasons for Joe User to switch away from IE, problems that affected him every day like crashes, pop ups, and general poor performance. Yet again you give nothing but anecdotes and when i ask a simple question, "sell me on this phone" YOU CAN'T DO IT...why? Because there is NO compelling reason for me to choose this phone, same goes for UbuntuPhone or WebOSPhone or any other niche phone because there is ZERO selling points over the competition which makes it a DOA product.
For a perfect example of why only anecdotes equals massive fail see WinPhone, it too has zero compelling reasons to switch from iOS and Android and guess what? Most folks ignored it just like they'll ignore MozPhone. You either can come up with a reason that I should buy your product over the competition or I will ignore you, plain as that.
I mean 1.- The whole appeal of Ubuntu has been "free as in beer" and while some could argue "free as in freedom" Shuttleworth's "This is not a democracy" kinda kills that idea for me and besides Android is ALREADY free as in beer and is FOSS so that isn't a selling point.
2.- ARM isn't X86 and just because something can be ported from one to the other does NOT mean it will run WELL, just that it will run. Android is built around ARM, Ubuntu has always been mainly X86 with the ARM branch getting VERY little love so it would have probably been slow as Xmas, use more power, and all around be a poor experience compared to the other 3.
3.- Most importantly Android has critical mass so the network effect is in play, see how slim the pickings are at the MSFT WinPhone appstore for why that is important. I know some will argue the wealth of Linux software, see rule 2.
4.- Google is spending a reported billion bucks a year on Android and that just isn't isn't in advertising folks, that is serious R&D and UI development and bug fixing and regression testing and...you get the idea. Canonical just wouldn't have the funds to keep up with something that huge and it wouldn't be long before it would be sucking hind teat behind the big three.
5.- Finally we've seen "one device to rule them all" tried time and time again and what do you get? Shit, that's what. A phone is not a laptop is not tablet and what works well on one does NOT mean it will work well or even decently on the other. hell bicycles are the most popular transport numbers wise on the planet but you don't see folks replacing their steering wheels with bike handlebars do ya? Why not? Because a good UI for one doesn't mean a good UI for all and I think we can see from the huge backlash against Win 8 that folks DO NOT WANT one device to rule them all, they want their cellphone UI and their desktop UI to be optimized for their respective places so this would be a hard thing to sell to the masses.
So just as I said with the MozPhone, which just FYI I have YET to have anybody give me an answer to what should frankly be a trivial question I'll ask again with regards to UbuntuPhone...I'm an Android user, I'm in YOUR phone store and you believe in this OS...sell it to me. What EXACTLY does it offer me the user over my Android i have now? What would make this a better choice than just buying the latest Android phone? Honestly if this device is a good idea this should be a simple and easy question but like MozPhone I have a feeling all I'll get is insults and changing the subject because this doesn't really have anything to offer over the Android in my pocket.
Sorry but your analogy? Giant FAIL, massive on the level of fail in fact. You see IE had SEVERAL problems, major problems that Mozilla solved. 1.- IE had been abandoned by MSFT once they had "won" the browser war so it was becoming more and more creaky and crashprone, 2.- ActiveX left a hole you could drive a truck through with the OS, 3.- Bug and security fixes were practically non-existent because the team had been broken up, thus making it more and more risky.
Compare this to MozPhone, which even though there is a LOT of people advocating it here when I said simply "sell me on this phone" NOBODY could do it, not a single person could come up with a single reason why i should give up my Android for this phone.
How so? It sounds like.....well pretty much what ChromeOS already is, a stripped down Linux thinclient.
Thinclients aren't exactly new, in fact I remember when companies like Sun were pushing the "all you need is thinclients!" mantra and just like this the thing that bit a big chunk out of your behind was the fact that if you ever lose your connection you're screwed which you'd be surprised how often that happens, not to mention the fact that the ISPs are all getting nastier when it comes to caps.
So while i wish this guy all the luck in the world i really don't see anything revolutionary, at least from TFA, it just seems like a server thinclient to me and with the huge number of CPUs you can get in even a cheap server along with VMs that allow moving running VMs on the fly? Well maybe he'll find a niche but it sounds more like a solution in search of a problem to me.
Uhhh how EXACTLY was it a "deflection attempt" when by the obvious wording of his post he was making it clear he was looking down on the USA and by extension implying his country was better?
To use the famed/. car analogy it would be like ridiculing your neighbors Yugo for smoking while your Trabant is leaving a fog bank behind you. If you want to point out another country's failing fine but don't hold your own up as a better example when your country is just as shitty as the one you are ridiculing.
Personally I think its great as long as they don't ask for ID and really REALLY wish they would implement it here as for every insightful Anon posting you have a good 50 that are the equivalent of someone just screaming "Nigger faggot shill!" over and over AND OVER.
I mean it takes...what? 3 minutes to make a fricking account here? And with an account its MUCH easier to see abusers and REAL shilling, without it you are forced to either put up with a bazillion crap posts or put the negative rated posts off the page which will often leave a thread nothing but a group think circlejerk as those that go against the groupthink end up modedbombed. Modbombing is another problem that could be solved by this because if a moderator sees that poster "juicyfruit99" uses their modpoints to go after a single poster or only mods down those that don't like company X? Well its really not hard to spot the patterns.
Finally I'm sure the old timers, if there are any left, will back me up on this but not even 5 years ago the majority of postings you saw here were by posters with an ID, Anon was nearly exclusively your trolls like Penisbird or the classic "caring for your new nigger" copypasta but now? The majority of posts on every single article is Anons. Tell me something....has the quality of posts gone up or down? I would argue that it has gone down as the anons know they can post anything with zero consequence (the "Gabe Internet Fuckwad Theory") whereas not many were gonna go to the trouble of making a new account because they kept burning through old ones...well except for that Mikey(insert incremental digit) poster but I still think that thing was a chatbot experiment.
So my modest proposal would be to implement something similar here for 6 months and see if the quality of threads go up or down. After all if the majority vote its not any better it can always be reverted and at least then we would know if the decline in quality was due to ACs or to the old timers simply no longer caring enough to post here.
Here is what I personally don't get...why is there all these cheers about MozOS? What problem EXACTLY does it solve, well other than giving phone carriers the ability to have their own locked down appstores which is the gist i got from their original announcement.
I don't know, maybe I'm missing something here, but android is already FOSS, hell you can take most phones and install your own image from Cyanogenmod or AreaRomQ or wherever there is one that works on your particular hardware (a problem MozPhone won't solve as it all comes down to the drivers) and pretty much do what you want with it, oh and its free as in beer as well, so what EXACTLY is the advantage for the user to get a MozPhone over an Android or an iPhone?
So pretend I'm the customer and I currently have an LG Android phone...which ironically is exactly what i have as my damned contract finally ran out so I got an LG slider and went prepaid, but I'm in the store looking at the phones and you believe in MozPhone so sell it to me...what EXACTLY does a MozPhone do for me the customer that my android don't? What are the advantages that MozPhone brings over Android? Because I've been watching this develop as I'm having more and more to support phones and tablets and so far I have yet to see anybody say anything about MozPhone that would make me want to give up my android for it.
Their DNS is used by their enterprise server products so have the latest blacklists and heuristics and as I said its been a few versions since I tried Chrome. In the end frankly it doesn't matter because as far as I'm concerned its spam, any company that pushes their products through unrelated products like the way the toolbar spammers do IS spam itself. If you walk like a duck and quack like a duck? You're a duck.
And folks wonder why CPUs get faster but programs get slower and buggier? Well here ya go, paint by numbers programming. The problem with PBN programming is its "one size fits all" which frankly means it truly fits NOBODY, its either too loose or too tight or in this case too bloated or too generic and what you get is frankly crap, its the Mickey D's of programming.
Show me EVIDENCE that there is a "small chance" otherwise you are buying snake oil, hell if you want that send me $50K and a lock of your hair and I'll put it in a bank vault in the Ozark mountains and then when cloning is perfected you are set.
Frankly you'd have the SAME ODDS as any company in the future spending the hundreds of millions it would cost to refurb your brain and stick it in a droid, after all who is gonna sue them if they renege 200 years from now?
Notice I get modded down for speaking the truth? if it were JUST the browser that would be one thing but working on systems I can tell you that you can easily end up with more than a half dozen, sometimes a dozen or more, ALL trying to run at startup and ALL constantly phoning home? And people wonder why that dual core laptop they bought is slowed to a crawl in 6 months.
Would it be REALLY so bad to just check upon launch? if they aren't running the app then WTF do they need to be checking for updates for? Its not running, its not a problem. And you are right the repo design would NOT work in Windows, the bandwidth alone would raise the cost of Windows to $400+ a copy just to pay the net bill! Hell look at how Canonical has to hold out the tin cup and beg for donations and they aren't getting even 2% of the traffic Windows Update does, you can just imagine how much bandwidth if ALL third parties AND Windows were using WU, it'd be insane not to mention every patch Tuesday would probably cause major net slowdowns.
Oh don't get me wrong, if some corp said "If you work for us for say a century to pay off the cost of this new Billy Badass Android body we'll bolt your butt into you too can enjoy immortality"? You damned straight I'll take it, just don't feed me a line of horseshit with ZERO success stories as a viable plan.
This is the problem I have with most religions, especially Christians (don't have much contact with the others living in the bible belt) as they have ZERO proof that their book is any more true than say the book or Isis or the stories of Zoroaster (which frankly i think a LOT of the stuff attributed to Jesus was ripped from Zoroaster, water to wine, raising the dead ring any bells?) yet I'm supposed to change MY life and MY values so I can worship a God that frankly if you actually READ the book comes off as a powermad bully at best and a genocidal sociopath at worst? No thanks, I'm not buying.
As for this crap show me ONE guy, just one, that has actually been unfrozen and is actually functional and THEN I'll be happy to buy their bullshit but until this it sounds like a great way for a few corps to get rich on the fear of death, that is all.
But how easy is it for Joe and Jane Normal to even FIND that, much less disable it? To steal a line from Tron "I stand for the users" and I fricking HATE when a program uses shit like Task Scheduler without giving an easy UI element in the program to disable it. Last I checked there was NO checkbox or button to disable that from within Chrome, with Dragon there is a checkbox so it CAN be done in a Chromium based browser and in Pale Moon, the Gecko based I hand to customers, it doesn't run any service at all, just doing the IMHO more sane thing of checking upon launch for any updates.
Just remember what is trivial for YOU to do does NOT mean its trivial for THEM to do and fixing Windows boxes 6 days a week I can tell you that all that shit loading itself as services and Task Scheduler tasks DOES weigh down a system pretty badly, especially those AMD Bobcat duals that Worst Buy has been pushing for home boxes and laptops of late. I personally like the Bobcat chips because of how insanely low powered they are but you really have to watch not getting too much shit loading in the background or they just crawl, which is why shit loading in Task Scheduler without a UI in program irks me as most users don't even know where Task Scheduler is, much less how to tell what is an important Windows service and what is just bullshit. There is NO REASON why Google couldn't take the more sane approach of just checking on startup for a new version, this running constantly in the background is just bullshit IMHO.
So for my users I disable all that phone home checkers and services and crap and just have Filehippo Update Checker set to run once a day. Not only does this cut down a HELL of a lot in used resources as Filehippo only uses around half a Mb of RAM and less than 2% of CPU even on a Bobcat or Atom but it also gives the user a "one stop shop" that lets them update ALL the major third party stuff from one simple to use location. Between that and Ninite for initial installs its better for me, better for them, and you don't have every dang program running in the background constantly checking for updates which is just a better way to do it IMHO.
Uhhh isn't that the argument that EVERYBODY uses to stick their shit in startup and slow Windows to a crawl, that THEIR shit is important and lightweight so the others shouldn't do that but THEY shouldn't be called for it?
And lightweight as compared to what? You slap Chrome on a netbook and all that phoning home WILL slow down the system, especially those Atom based netbooks. Kinda sad that everyone bitches about "what Intel giveth MSFT takes away" while ignoring all the shit like Chrome running 24/7 slowing shit down.
For me the final straw which got Chrome put on my "Must always uninstall" list was the spamming, when you start using the same dirty tricks the toolbar makers use like tying yourself to a completely unrelated installer like Java or CCleaner? You ARE a spammer in my book and deserve to be banned from any system I touch. Thankfully there is a huge pile of FOSS browsers to choose from that do NOT spam and run a ton of shit in the background but until Google stops using dirty toolbar tricks to get Chrome installed its on my ban list, its treated no different than CoolWebSearch or any other spammer.
It did last I checked which was like 2 versions ago. I too don't like a bunch of background crap running which is why I give my customers Comodo Dragon instead, it has a grand total of one service (dragon update) which is as easy to turn off as unchecking the "automatically check for updates" box whereas i couldn't find a way to kill all the background crap with Chrome.
For those that haven't tried it there is NO phone home, just the option of using their secure DNS in the browser to block phishing but that is totally optional, and all your Chrome extensions WILL work in Dragon as its based on Chromium. It'll take 2 to 3 weeks for this latest change to filter through as they remove any phone home crap but what I like is the fact it never changes UI wise, they moved the option button from the right to the left at version 4 and that was it, its kept the same UI ever since.
As for Chrome what REALLY pisses me off about how Google is handling it is that they have become as bad as the toolbar spammers, you don't know how many times I get called a week because Chrome has hijacked the default browser slot because this or that program is getting paid by Google to spam Chrome. I mean c'mon Google, you have the biggest search engine on the planet hawking your wares, do you REALLY need to spam Chrome with updates to Java and CCleaner?
I would go one step further and have it coded into law that if their camera "mysteriously" fails before a supposed misdeed? They and their dept as well as the state are responsible and WILL be open to lawsuits.
Because I am noticing a disturbing trend in my area, somebody gets stopped by the cops for "suspicious driving" (driving while black) or "disturbing the peace" (I felt like fucking with him) or whatever BS they want to come up with and the suspect shows up looking like they went 5 rounds in the ring, guess what happens when the lawyer demands the dashcam? "Oh darn, that was the day the camera was down, isn't that a shame".
Remember folks having the camera is only half the equation, if there isn't laws in place to protect the evidence they will just say "that was the day the camera failed" and trash the video, with these systems its just too easy to get rid of any incriminating footage.
That still doesn't excuse the first half a decade that he had it where it has been reported he had NO chemo or radiation, just the Whipple after trying to cure it himself with diet and quacks which probably shortened his life.
When you are the head of something as huge as Apple the FIRST THING you should do when told of a life threatening illness is to get your house in order and have a plan in place should anything go wrong. What Jobs did was basically ignore the signs and continue as though he was gonna be there forever and its biting them on the ass right now, see how they haven't come out with anything innovative since he passed and the "iWatch" idea is pretty much being laughed at before its even being released. Again you read the man's writings and you get the feeling that if Apple tanks after he died that would have been fine with him as it would make him look like that much more of a genius and with his ego the bigger the statues and legend the better.
There is NO WAY to compare the two, with one you are CODING a program and are ONLY calling on libraries for the repetitive parts with the other the ONLY thing being done IS the libraries, its the difference between using premade paints to paint a picture and filling in a paint by numbers, no comparison.
There really is nothing TO discuss because if they haven't come up with some magical potion that keeps 100% of the ice crystals from forming AND a way to unfreeze without damage all they are gonna end up with when they thaw it is mush anyway. The way it was explained to me its not the flash freezing that is the biggest problem, after all you dunk a head in liquid nitrogen and it'll flash freeze alright, the problem is in the thawing as THAT is where all the damage occurs.
That said this reminds me of that line from Devil's Advocate "Vanity, it has to be my favorite sin." because this is no different than all those mainstream religions selling life after death, in both cases they appeal to both the fear of death and the person's ego as THEY shouldn't have to just end like everybody else. Personally I hope we one day grow beyond all this insanity and accept that we have one spin at the wheel and thus have to make the most of what we have but considering religions go back over 4000 years, all selling life after death? I kinda doubt it.
Dude I think this would be kinda hard to call "creating" when you are just using prebuilt snippets and throwing them together. It kinda reminds me of the way guys would go to some VB website back in the day and just copypasta pieces of code to "make" something. If this works like that then half assed and buggy will be pretty much standard as I've never seen anything made with snippets that was worth a crap.
I don't know about that as when Win 8 BSODs on a laptop at the shop I'm all gleeful as at least the damned thing isn't treating every touch of the damned trackpad as a fucking swipe and popping that charms shit up. I swear Win 8 ought to be called "Stop doing that!" as its what i hear from every customer who tries to show me what is "wrong" with their system.
I've been quoting Beck for years, even a broken clock twice a day and all that. There is one thing he said which i think needs to be carved onto the mountain and NEVER forgotten which is "You do NOT shred the constitution to "get the bad guys" as its the constitution that keeps us from becoming the bad guys". I'm sorry if some don't like the guy but on that point he is right, once you start throwing out the rule book to "get the bad guys" the definition of bad guy just keeps growing until YOU are the bad guy.
As for what event? I think it was when the left saw Obama embrace pretty much everything that Bush was hated for that finally forced the left to wake the fuck up and realize what a guy SAYS don't mean shit its what he DOES and what Obama has done is the third and fourth Bush term, that's all.
Well we won't know until the USA stops stirring up shit and being the pit bull of the ruling class now will we? i think gen Butler's speech is aproporiate as it shows just how fucking long this shit has been going on. This is a speech from the 1930s based on his experiences AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY so this shit has been going on for a looooonnnnggg time folks.
"I helped make Mexico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested."
Sound familiar? Change the locations and it could have been written last year, the ONLY thing that changes is the location and which corp profits, that's all.
It case you didn't get the memo the corps rule the governments now, so any and all measures to protect profits, especially from IP whose term limits have been made into "forever minus a single day" SHALL be employed.
