You mean like that guy that made a movie showing what the Koran says about the "dear prophet"? last I heard he was in jail, they found an excuse and used it.
Make NO mistake there ARE protected classes in the USA and if you piss off one of the protected classes you WILL get attacked, probably lose your job, maybe even go to jail.
Uhhh...who says one is good? The west rightly so treat Phelps and the WBC as extremists no different than the Aryan brotherhood, its Islam where those same extremists are treated as mainstream, see the huge amount of mosques in the USA preaching "death to the infidels!" rhetoric.
I'm sorry but Apple deserves what they get as Jobs knew for a decade his time was running out but right up almost to the bitter end he refused to groom his replacement and make sure the company would continue down the path he set. You read the emails and other behind the scenes stuff and its really hard to get the impression all that Jobs cared about was Jobs and that the company tanking when he died would just boost his legend that much more which was fine by him.
As for Google they need to remember who was ruling the roost when they started, Altavista and Yahoo...where are they now? Altavista is gone and Yahoo is a shell of its former self. Google NEEDS all those bright young people cooking up new products on their dime as that is what lets them stay ahead of the game and in tech if you sit on ass and just ride on existing products it really don't take long for the hot new thing to come out and steal your thunder. Remember folks once upon a time Yahoo and MSFT were kings and Apple had Michael Dell telling them to give the money to the shareholders and give up as they had NO chance to recover, in tech you innovate or you sit on ass and if you ain't doing one you are probably doing the other.
Well duh! Just look at MSFT, Ballmer has been shooting the company in the face for the past few years because the Wall Street pundits keep screaming "Apple mobile synergy wharrgarbl" and has blown something like 40 billion in the process while the stock stays flat. The simple fact is that Wall Street is completely broken thanks to the massive bubble the government has been blowing since the 80s and until that bursts the stock market is worthless as an indicator of value, its just got too much money chasing too few stocks, hell its more like Vegas than investing anymore.
As for why killing 20% time is retarded, they never hear of Yahoo? or MySpace? Once upon a time like Google they were the top of the heap but then they sat on ass and didn't prepare for the future and when the next new thing came out they were completely blindsided and went down the toilet pretty damned quickly. What is hot today does NOT guarantee you are gonna be hot tomorrow and with the Internet there is ZERO loyalty, again see MySpace. Having all that R&D kept new ideas and products in the pipelines which is the lifeblood of tech and if they don't watch it some little upstart will come along with the next new thing and they can join Altavista and AOL on the "Hey you remember when?" pile.
That doesn't make Jobs any less of a douchebag sociopath, in fact because Jobs had several times the amount of money that Woz had if anything that kind of backstabbing bullshit just makes him more of an asshole in my book.
This is one thing I always hated about the RDF because at least everybody knew that Gates and Ellison were assholes but Jobs was able to sell the public on this "hipster genius perfectionist idealist" horseshit when IRL he was just as big of a douchebag and a backstabber as any of the other big names in IT. That is why I loved Pirates of Silicon Valley because that is more like how it was, Jobs was just as big a backstabber as Gates but his own ego and desire for control ended up screwing him and letting Gates take the top spot with Windows.
Uhhh...if you lose your laptop AND you wallet? I don't think your data should be your biggest concern, do you? And as far as security goes I don't see how having a TPM is anymore secure, after all I'm sure LEOs like the 3 letter boys can get the keys for TPM whereas something like the dongle I set up they would have to be able to get your flash AND figure out your password. Besides "what you have/what you know" is good enough for our ATMs and bank accounts it should be good enough for your data.
But if you haven't looked at them lately you really should check out the new flash sticks, I have one just like that customers and its literally smaller than 3 M&Ms laid lengthwise, its small enough I keep it in the little zipper pocket in my wallet and never feel it back there. If that isn't thin enough for you they now have CC flashsticks, go to Meritline and look them up, same size as your average Mastercard. I just don't see how you see it as a big hardship to slide something into and out of your wallet, it takes less than 10 seconds for me to whip my flash out, it takes longer to put my laptop to sleep than it does to put up the stick.
Finally I thought the point of TPM was a combination of DRM (that is what MSFT and Intel pushed about in the initial presentations after all, how movie studios and live events could use TPM to keep copies being made) along with giving corporate a way to control security instead of trusting it to the employee. Call me paranoid but I'll stick with something like Truecrypt where the only one that has access is me, again not likeFDE is gonna bog down a system anymore, not when you can get an AMD quad laptop for something like $380 at Tiger now.
Not to mention a LOT of those students? Were just scammed. I've seen it too many times, they crank up the high pressure sales pitch on some 18 year old kid and they can't tell what is bullshit and what isn't, they just don't have the life experience, hell its probably the first high pressure sales pitch they have ever fricking dealt with!
I swear some of these schools wear their failure rates like a badge of honor, like it shows "only the best of the best" make it or something but when you think about it that means a good 6 or 7 out of 10 end up with a nice pile of debt and not even the piece of paper to show for it which is just low. Finally you have those that will outright lie about what the prospects of this or that degree are to put butts in the seats of the less profitable classes, again living in a college town i have seen that as well and what little snot nosed green 18 year old is gonna know when they are being bamboozled, especially when the one doing it has 20+ years of being a pitchman under their belt?
But what we are doing by keeping Bush's "You can never escape" law is simply setting up an entire generation to live in grinding poverty as most will NEVER make enough to even pay the interest if they did graduate, those that like I said got scammed or tried to go to one of those "we kick more than we keep" schools sure as fuck have no chance so you have an entire generation that is if they are lucky gonna get on the dole (as that can't be grabbed for student loans) or else live in a rathole and have nothing for the rest of their lives because they will never ever even come close to getting out of debt. Looking at the way things are I have to say debtors prisons were probably better as at least when you were let out the debtor couldn't follow you around forever taking every cent you made.
Its already tipping as defaults are at an all time high but thanks to the changes Bush passed in 06 you can't even get out of debt with bankruptcy and that REALLY needs to change. Living in a small college town I hear of at least a couple a year committing suicide because of student loans, last year one in my own building hanged himself because they wouldn't stop hounding him over it.
That said after the student loan bubble bursts they'll be one major bubble left to pop and that's the stock bubble and when that one pops colleges will be ghost towns as it'll make the depression look like a flash crash, VERY nasty and only a matter of time now, the bubble is too massive to slowly deflate.
Well he was in Desert Storm and he said "The thing we had too much of was tape, both red and duct, what did we have too little of? Everything else". he said you'd be amazed how much shit was just improvised or jury rigged at the squad level because nobody had thought to provide it and you had a couple PHBs above you in the chain of command that were "trying to show their leadership skills" by basically cockblocking any and all requests.
Like I said if you changed rank to corporate titles you really couldn't have been able to tell the difference in our stories, it was all typical large org corporate bullshit like too many looking at "the big picture" with nobody looking at what it'll take to get there, too many that didn't want to spend a cent, and too often having to make due with tools that frankly didn't cut the mustard,it was just like any large org.
Remember the malice/incompetence rule Drinkypoo, the military is just like any large org with PHBs and BOFHs and grunts that jury rig shit up just so they don't have to deal with the PHBs and BOFHs, I used to work with a guy that was ex military IT and from his stories you could have just replaced rank with corporate titles and his military stories and my corporate stories would have been interchangeable.
Could some of it be because of malice or coverup? Sure but I bet a hell of a lot more of it was just band aids cooked up by grunts that ended up going to shit when they were rotated out. I mean how many of us have gone in and seen a "mission critical" application that turned out to be some VB plus Access mess cooked up by some guy named Bob who didn't comment shit in his code because it was ONLY supposed to last until the start of the next quarter but instead just grew and grew until it became a giant mess, and now that he has been gone for years nobody knows WTF to do about it? I know I've seen that more times than I care to count and I bet if you went to the front lines you'd find more duct taped crap used as band aids to fix problems than anybody would care to admit, this shit just happens a lot in large orgs.
Its not just that, according to a friend that spent 8 years in the military he said he was amazed when he started how much of the stuff was just thrown together by grunts because there was so much redtape and bullshit involved in going through channels that a lot of the grunts were just cooking up solutions on their own.
Now I've never been in the military so i don't know how much was true and how much bullshit but from what he was describing to me it sounded a hell of a lot like what I went through when working corporate, so many PHB middle managers and levels of just plain PITA bullshit that you tried to "make do" with what you had rather than get a raging skullthumper having to go through proper channels. Maybe some of the guys here that have worked military IT can chime in but it really did sound like all the same bullshit I saw working corporate, too many PHBs, too much redtape, so many layers of bureaucracy that you tried to avoid dealing with the higher ups if at all possible.
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
- Thomas Jefferson
"I see in the near future a crisis approaching; corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
In the middle of a job at the shop but if you'll just Google "Haswell ULV" and "New Atom 1w" I'm sure you'll find it, and AMD has a similar offering in the sub 5w space, Google "AMD embedded for tablets" and it'll point you in the right direction.
And I'm sorry I didn't make it clear as I wasn't meaning to intend that they use the jag, just that the ARM Holdings chip they bought was original for the Jag and they are now embedding ARM chips for similar purposes in the server space. i looked up the chip you mentioned and all i could find about its usage was for crypto like TPM and server side AES functions and there was some talk about using it with Linux to have a "sleepy server" where the X86 shuts down and hands over functions to the ARM which really only monitors requests and wakes up the X86 side if anything non trivial comes along.
But at the end of the day none of that changes the writing on the wall which is thus: Folks are living more and more on mobile devices and as they do they want more and more power and ARM just doesn't scale, its easier to cut down the IPC of X86 to meet a power requirement than to upscale ARM without blowing the power budget, hence why Samsung now makes hexacore ARM chips and Nvidia pentacore. The ARM arch was just never designed to do what the public increasingly wants which is why everything from DSPs to powerful GPUs have been bolted on as helper chips but at the end of the day it doesn't change the fact that ARM just isn't gonna scale enough to even meet a C2D from 6 years ago, much less a modern chip like the Jag or on the Intel side the Haswell.
Is it one button simple to set up? Is there a button when somebody gets an email from you to automagically download and setup the crypto backend so they only have to push a single button to have it all set up and ready to go, or is it a PITA to setup and use? I'm betting the latter.
You see this is why I say Linux doesn't have a prayer on the desktop as those that have the skills to write the OS and programs suck sweaty balls when it comes to designing UIs for Joe and Jane Public, they think because all these hoops are trivially easy for THEM to do means its trivially easy for Joe and Jane but the opposite is true IRL. Trust me friend as I work for Joe and Jane 6 days a week and most can't tell you what OS they have on their PC or their phone, they sure as hell ain't gonna have the skills to set up and use your solution.
Nooo I'm talking about the game Woz wrote and Jobs then sold and lied to Woz about how much it sold for so he could keep the lion's share. There is of course also the daughter he denied, how he ratted out those he sold blue boxes to,the emails about eBooks where he outright threatens those that don't play ball from what i understand he even bought a new car every 90 days just to keep from having to buy a license plate.
No matter how you slice it you look into the lives of these famous CEOs and you'll see many if not all exhibit classic sociopath behavior.
Uhhhh you DO know that you don't need TPM to do any of that, yes? Honestly friend with the incredible IPC of the modern Intel and AMD chips you can do full disc encryption using something like Truecrypt and honestly not even notice it, heck i set up one recently for a "road warrior" type using a bottom of the line AMD quad core laptop and you can't even "feel" any effect from the encryption. I got him a micro sized USB stick that slips into a zipper on his wallet and this acts with the encryption as a key, easy peasy.
That said as you pointed out and as did I getting hardware without TPM? Its NOT hard at all, in fact that vast majority don't even come with TPM, and that includes both Intel and Apple. Just to see if this has changed recently I fired up this core i3 laptop I'm replacing the default Metro crap with a Win 7 shell (which just FYI is harder than it sounds, if you truly want to kill metro dead you also have to kill ALL charms and apps bullshit and that involves some reg editing and a generic touchpad driver that kills swiping) and...nope, no TPM here.
If 900 people wear pink shirts and 100 wear blue, who do you think will be easier to single out, the pink or the blue? I work with John and Jane Public every. single. day. and I can tell you the ones you are describing is a minority, especially if they are under 40. Like it or not the public at large, especially the young, have become exhibitionist and ego driven as hell and with the MSM glorifying this with everything from updates from celebrity tweets and FB shit to reality TV those that you describe are gonna be all the more rare and again VERY easy to monitor and track. Hell with $20 smartphones having GPS and the ability to FB and tweet on the go you are seeing more and more who happily broadcast where they are and what they are doing every second of the day!
Remember the STASI had one of the most successful repressions of populace in history and they "only" watched less than 10% of the population and with today's society being fueled by "likes" and other social crap frankly the NSA doesn't even have to waste energy monitoring the FB generation, one call to Google and FB and they'll know every detail they could possibly want. Meanwhile those like what you describe? THEY will get will get the full court press and chilling effect, look at how Naomi Wolf whose "crime" was giving lectures on the constitution and things to look out for as threats to a democracy is now on the watchlist and gets the full NSA treatment when she dares go anywhere. Again it really doesn't take much, especially when the public is happily segregating itself into the "Hey want to know everything about me? Just click the follow button" majority and the private minority, makes the NSA's job all the easier.
Why bother with analogies in the first place when you are talking about copying some of the worst traits of oppressive regimes? We have seen time and time again how well the chilling effect works, after all it turned out when the wall fell and access to the actual records came out the STASI were "only" watching 10% of the population but that was enough to keep them in line, why? Because everybody thought they were the 1 in 10 and thus thought everything they did was being recorded and this constant scrutiny kept them in line.
I would STRONGLY suggest everyone here watch The End Of America by Naomi Wolf and please note this was made in 2007, BEFORE all this extra bullshit came out, and also note how many examples of what she calls "the playbook" of oppressive and non-free regimes is being played here even as we speak, the same kind of shit used by Uncle Joe and the crazy Austrian is happening right here in the USA folks. Now I personally believe it is because the ruling class knows we are gonna have a worldwide collapse that will make the great depression look like a flash crash and want the system of oppression in place in the hopes of being able to scare the peasants in line. Now personally I don't think it will work, once the checks that keep the peasants from starving disappear and it takes a wheelbarrow full of money to buy a loaf of bread the peasants won't fear because honestly they won't have anything to lose, but in any case you watch Wolf's video and look at the other warning signs and its pretty obvious that somebody at the top is pushing REAL hard to bring fascist police state tactics here and whomever is pushing this? Is obviously winning.
Bullshit just buy AMD as I don't think they even have a board that HAS TPM and what they are doing to fix that will leave the choice IN YOUR HANDS because instead of baking it into the board they'll have the "business class" chips with an ARM DRM chip they bought from ARM Holdings to do TPM and crypto and...well pretty much anything security related you want. Don't want the feature? All you do is don't buy the business class chips, simple as that.
My system has a 6 core CPU, 8GB of RAM (expandable to 16GB but for what i do frankly that would be overkill) and chews through any job I throw at it and NO TPM,same with my netbook which has dual cores and 8GB, same for my two boys quad and hexa, my dad's quad desktop...you get the idea.
Hell you can go over to Tiger and buy a TPM free quad laptop for $420 flat, or if you don't mind taking the whole 40 minutes it takes to slap one together you can get a fully loaded hexacore desktop for $310 after rebate, so not only can you support not having a TPM but you can save a good chunk of change which can be used on an SSD or faster GPU, win/win.
Oh please! The American public tweets their favorite sexual positions and post pics of themselves stoned on FB, think they are gonna give a rat's ass about privacy or the NSA?
I'm sorry but the NSA have the perfect position here in the states with the majority doing mindless exhibitionism so blatant you'll often be able to find out more about them than their lovers know which makes the few that still care about privacy stick out like sore thumbs and that much easier to track. The future is Big bro all right but its gonna be "Big Brah" and it'll be the public gladly handing over every scrap of info about themselves hoping to score a few more likes on whatever social shit is popular this week.
Uhhh the CEO is a sociopath...this is news? Sadly MOST CEOs would fit the classic definition of a sociopath, just look up Steve Jobs history some time. The man was several times richer than Woz when they were starting out yet fucked Woz over on one of their very first deals and you can find example after example of similar behavior with just about every CEO of a large company, the current business climate not only encourages but seems to go out of its way to reward sociopath behavior, even when they seriously damage the company.
And while I truly do hope he sues ultimately it won't touch the CEO as even if they were ordered to pay out millions over this and he destroys the company he'll just get a golden parachute and be pulling this shit at another company soon enough. It is truly mind boggling how these CEOs get paid like rock stars no matter how well or poorly they do, like barons and dukes they are a part of the upper crust and thus never seem to have to worry about the kind of things we peasants have to like doing a decent job, they'll make mountains of money no matter how badly they suck.
Even simpler just buy AMD as last i checked AMD doesn't have TPM, one of the reasons they are adding an ARM core to some of their newer chips as it can be used for TPM. Considering you can get a hexacore for $310 after MIR or if he wants mobility a quad core laptop for $420 I'd say its a no brainer, the bang for the buck is still firmly in the AMD camp.
That said I don't know WTF he is babbling about because AFAIK there isn't a TPM made ATM where the user isn't in control so he can use it, not use it, its not like some magical spy chip for the NSA so all he has to do is just not use the thing if he doesn't want to. That said batshit or not I'm a firm believer in giving the customer what they want so if he doesn't want TPM? There ya go, just gave him a desktop and a laptop both without TPM.
Uhhh...because nobody uses download mail anymore and Google and Yahoo can't datamine your email if it were encrypted so it ain't allowed?
I'm sure some geeks will chime in with how they run their own mail server and IMAP this and POP that but ya know what? You are the dinosaur, you're the 8-track, you are history. I'm sorry if that offends some but its a fact, i work with Joe and Jane Average 6 days a week and in the last 5 years how many of the thousands of customers from all walks of life have I had using download mail? TWO, both were retired corporate and liked their Outlook...that's it, that's all. Hell if you asked the average person under 30 they wouldn't even know WTF download mail or mail clients were, they have grown up on Yahoo and Gmail and that IS email to them. Then you have all the smartphones and tablets and while it may not come with an email client you can bet your ass it'll come with a browser and of course Gmail and Yahoo apps are an appstore search away.
So like it or not the war is over and security lost a looong time ago, now we have everyone posting their entire lives on FB and tweeting every minute of the day, do you REALLY think they are gonna care about encryption or go through the hassles of using download mail when they already have yahoo and Gmail and it does what they want it to?
Its really simple Billy, if your profit increases by X but your CEO shits X+Y+Z down the tubes? then it doesn't matter as you are screwed.
If you look at the numbers over the last 6 years on what all Ballmer has pissed away money with from Zune to the RRoD (which was trivial to fix but Ballmer wanted to beat Sony out the door) to turning single digit gains into double digit losses in the PC market by trying to ram a cellphone OS down everyone's throat? I'd say losing 40 billion is a VERY conservative estimate. Sure MSFT has deep pockets but they ain't endless and with a CEO that spends like a drunken sailor in Vegas on shit that doesn't make a cent in ROI without new leadership in the big chair MSFT be fucked dude, fucked bad.
You mean like that guy that made a movie showing what the Koran says about the "dear prophet"? last I heard he was in jail, they found an excuse and used it.

- Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21 1864
Actually it makes perfect sense AC, you see who are you most likely to send something nasty like a poisoned letter to? The taxman.
