Except a good 90% of their customers DO NOT upgrade every year and stay on the bleeding edge, hence why they went for this "fuck you pay me" route in the first place. i have customers with CS going back to CS3 and ya know what? They were happy with what they had and only bought when an OS upgrade meant it wouldn't run. Now they are ALL looking at alternatives, just as i have customers looking at Macs and ChromeOS instead of getting fucked with WinPhone 8 for a desktop.
Adobe and MSFT really don't need any enemies as they are really good at screwing themselves.
Uhhh...dude? yeah kinda hate to be the bearer of bad news and all but they don't even have to do the old "steam the letter open" trick anymore, not with envelopes being so...well paper thin now and with multispectral scanners being so good.
So unless you are hand delivering the email i really don't think your way is gonna be any kind of improvement, hell if USPS wanted they could go "Whoops, don't know where that went" as after all it wouldn't be the first time it was lost in transmission.
And once upon a time all Apple PCs were PPC...your point? Just because ARM is used in X NOW does NOT mean it will be used in X in the future, in fact with 3 major consoles going X86 (PS4,XBN, and Steambox) that will be a further incentive for the handhelds to go X86 as it'll make the likelihood of ports higher.
Again i never said ARM was gonna disappear, just like there are still big iron servers out there, but they will NOT be the dominate mobile chip any longer because they can't fix the IPC problem. What you fail to grasp is with X86 having such an incredible lead on IPC frankly its a hell of a lot easier to cut a powerful chip down, see Atom and bobcat for example, than it is to get a weak chip to scale up, that is just how it is and there is nothing ARM can do about it short of throwing out the whole design and starting over.
Why do you think Nvidia is up to 5 cores and Samsung 6? ARM doesn't scale dude, it just don't. Feel free to look up the benches yourself, an 8 year old prescott P4 curbstomps the latest ARM chips when it comes to IPC. As more and more folks do more and more with mobile they are gonna demand it perform and ARM just doesn't. The most likely future for ARM will be in cheap commodity devices like thermostats, MP3 players, all those little specialized tasks that a general purpose chip won't be good at. There is no shame in that but its gonna be a shitty margin market compared to ARM of today which is why it would make a lousy investment unless you were looking for a quick rollover.
Well like I said there is different levels of sick, there is like my migraines where simple tasks are doable but complex tasks are a no go, there is when you aren't feeling right and you are contagious as hell but are still up and around (walking wounded my granddad called it) and then there is the "get me a bucket to puke in" levels of sick and since everyone is different trying to decide what constitutes sick is just too open for interpretation.
Exactly which is why I automatically think something hinky is going on when we see a case like this, because there are tons of dumbasses fired every day and the reason they don't make headlines is it takes the company 2 seconds to show they fucked up constantly. A bad employee will give you enough rope to hang them several times over, no need to get into FB or anything else as their behavior on site should be enough to get them shitcanned, which makes me want to know what the REST of the story is with this case.
This is why I think the work sick needs to be taken out of the equation, because everybody is different. For example when I am having one of my migraines as long as I wear REALLY dark glasses i can do basic tasks like follow a list to get groceries, but can I work on PCs like I normally do? Nope because those backlit screens are like jabbing needles in my eyes, even the one on my cell hurts. But if you saw me at the store you'd think "hey there is nothing wrong with him!" because while i couldn't do my job basic tasks that don't involve screens is doable, again as long as I wear really dark shades to block out most of the light.
So we really need to just call it paid time off and be done with it, because sick days leave too many loopholes on both sides.
Yeah I had to say the irony is moist and delicious when the guy banging the drum for Internet privacy has the largest number of red flags from PrivDog I have ever seen at 10, hell the porn sites don't have that much damned tracking!
Ya know as much as I hate RMS that is one thing I'll give him credit for, i went to his website and there is ZERO tracking going on, it was 100% tracker free. I found that refreshing and it was nice to see there are still some that walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
Wow...way to fail at reading, congrats. My POINT which seems to have been missed by you entirely is it DOES NOT MATTER what a party supposedly says it is for, be that D or R, but what they actually do when they are in power.
And I'm sorry but you are full of shit when it comes to being held to the fire, Clinton was nearly impeached, Obama has had fast & furious, Benghazi, Rev Wright, and talking to a former member of the Weathermen and that is just off the top of my head. The simple fact is if they were REALLY held to the fire Bush and Obama would have probably been brought up on war crimes, Bush for sure, while I'm not sure if Obama would qualify for it or just impeachment for ignoring his oath to uphold the constitution.
But I find the irony moist and delicious that you are defending Bush and ripping Obama when they are practically the same person, or did you forget that Bush passed the biggest boost social programs had seen in ages with the prescription drug coverage? And I don't know what you are smoking but its obvious just from the evidence that was have seen so far that except for Fast & Furious Obama has been following Bush and the right wing's playbook, from passing Romneycare (written by The Heritage Foundation which is a VERY right wing thinktank) to drone strikes to domestic spying he is only following the same playbook that Bush used.
Perhaps you ought to watch this video made during the Bush years and see how much of it still applies today? The fact is the liberals and conservatives were BOTH run out of their respective parties ages ago, with fiscal conservatives kicked to the curb in favor of bible thumpers and neocons under Ronnie Raygun and progressive liberals kicked in favor of big money interests lik Hollywood studios and Wall Street. What you get today isn't even coke VS pepsi, its coke in a tall bottle VS a more squat bottle, in every way that matters they are the same party.
AMD knows they can't compete with Intel on the IPC in the server space and have you looked at the chip in question? Its based on what we now know is the chip from the consoles which has a SPECIALIZED core from ARM built for DRM functions, this of course will give them an advantage in the server space as dedicated chips will always be better than general purpose for specific jobs.
So just to make it clear I'm not saying there will never be another ARM chip made, merely that it will go back to being used as it was before the ARM craze hit and that is for embedded and specialty tasks. BTW I don't have the time to Google it for you but if you put in "AMD ARM DRM" I'm sure you'll find the info.
Thanks but its not so much about avoiding downloading, although when you are talking about the cost of data on a cell that is a must have, but mainly convenience. Folks want to be able to just type the message, hit the button and it goes, that's it. If you can make a two way encryption THAT simple? You can get folks to encrypt their email.
But every email encryption I've ever seen is a general PITA, hard to set up, complex, hard to get another person to use because its hard to set up and complex, and doesn't work well if at all on Android and iOS and doesn't support Yahoo and Gmail which is where the folks are and they aren't gonna want to switch to running their own download mail servers, yet another PITA, all just to have crypto on their emails. So until this problem is licked, if it ever is, you just aren't gonna get people to encrypt, its just too much of a hassle.
Uhhh...did you read my post or just see the words "X86" and automatically think of a PC? What I thought I had made clear was the much lower power usage of the new chips by AMD and Intel is gonna lead to them both being used in the places that ARM is used today such as tablets and phones. If you want to get a taste or if any devs want to try AMD already has a prototyping board out that is 4 inches by 4 inches for $199.
And this isn't even the latest and greatest, the new APU they just released a few weeks ago uses less than 3w under typical loads and that is for a dual core like this with a Radeon GPU that does 1080P and I bet even plays a lot of games, I know on my nearly 4 year old Bobcat dual i play the Portal series, L4D and GTA:VC (it would probably play the others but I don't have them) and there are plenty of videos of guys playing even more hardcore games like Crysis on them and getting 30FPS with reduced bling.
So you seem to be confused friend, nobody is gonna make you go back to a PC if you don't want to, you are simply gonna be able to have the power of the PC in your pocket. Once Intel and AMD phones and tablets start hitting en masse I'm sure that all your favorite phone apps will be ported, after all its the form factor not the arch that makes the app work, you'll just be able to do a HELL of a lot more with your mobile devices thanks to the insane lead X86 has when it comes to IPC. Hell Intel has said both the new Atom and the new CULV mobile chips will have "reduced function" mode which is where the majority of the chip shuts completely down but its still able to do basic tasks, like say listen to music or receive messages.
I'm telling you all you have to do is look at the benches to see the writing is on the wall for ARM as their latest and greatest can't beat a first gen Core Solo or Athlon 64 and those are 6+ year old chips, you compare the best ARM has to offer against the weakest AMD and Intel offers today and its no contest, the X86 units just curbstomp ARM when it comes to the amount of useful work per cycle. Will ARM die? No but most likely it'll go back to the original use before the ARM craze took off, being embedded controllers in everything from MP3 players to kiosks.
I'm sorry but in less than 3 years ARM is gonna be toast so anybody who invests in ARM is a fool. Look up the numbers, when it comes to IPC an ARM quad gets curbstomped by a Prescott P4 in all but the JavaScript bench which was tuned for ARM, its only selling point has been crazy low battery usage and its about to lose that advantage.
You look at what AMD and Intel have cooking and you can see where the wind is blowing, AMD already has a fanless APU that maxes at 6w with all sectors of the chip maxed out, IRL it uses less than 3w under typical loads and that gives you a dual core APU with a Radeon chip capable of running 1080P over HDMI, and Intel has Haswell and the new Atom is supposedly down to a couple of watts under load and less than 1w in "functional standby" where it can still receive messages and calls.
The simple fact is ARM just doesn't scale well and no matter how many millions Samsung and Nvidia sink into it they just can't fix this fundamental flaw. So far the only real luck either company has had is by throwing more cores (and thus using more power) at the problem, with Nvidia up to 5 cores and Samsung up to 6 and even with all those cores it'll still get curbstomped by a 3 year old AMD Bobcat or Intel Atom dual, the current chips just widen the gap. As more and more people do more and more with their phones and tablets they are gonna want that higher performance without compromising on weight and like it or not X86 has the IPC crown by a pretty damned large margin.
I personally feel sorry for Nvidia, they are gonna be the ones left out in the cold as frankly Intel and AMD just don't need them anymore, although how Intel was able to destroy the Nvidia chipset business without getting slammed by antitrust I'll never know. Nvidia really should have partnered or bought out Via a few years back, the Via Nano is a pretty damned solid chip, decent performance with power drain that sits right in the middle of the curve, not to mention its built in crypto support would have made it a solid entry for ULV servers but now its too late. While I wish Nvidia luck as I believe in competition I just don't see a new Surface finding a niche, not with dual core Android tablets looking to be in the $100 range by Xmas, Android has the apps, the network effect that MSFT enjoyed on desktops, its gonna be damned hard for MSFT to get a toehold in there and with Nvidia locked out of the next gen consoles things don't look too good for big green.
Sorry but I have to throw a flag, bullshit on the field. What about nature photographers, and others that spend long times in the field? They supposed to pay insane prices for a mobile sat uplink so Adobe can phone home to see if you aren't a pirate? this isn't some video game, this is a tool that many make a living with.
But I can say one positive thing about Adobe pulling a MSFT, just as MSFT is driving users to macs and ChromeOS so too is Adobe driving customers to try the Corel products, so at least we might see some real competition again.
As the guy that fixes and sets up PCs 6 days a week I can confirm this, in fact I've only had 2 users still use download mail in the past 5 years and both were retired corporates who were used to Outlook, everybody else? Yahoo and Gmail.
So if anybody wants encrypted emails to go anywhere there really needs to be some sort of browser based encryption that can work with Yahoo and Gmail, perhaps by making a generic "here is the email" letter with the actual email as an encrypted attachment? Oh and it'll need to be install-able as an app on Android and iOS, because nothing turns folks off more than not being able to check their email on their smartphones and tablets.
And Snowden, and Assange, and Putin for protecting Snowden from getting a rendition ride, hell I could go on all day just listing the underhanded shit that has been started, continued, or in many cases expanded under this administration.
I do hope this serves as a valuable lesson though, that just because somebody has a D after their name don't mean shit, actions speak louder than words and the only ones who can say Obama is left wing anymore is Fox news. To the rest of us it should be obvious by now what we are seeing is Dubya's third and fourth terms, just wrapped in touchy feely rhetoric to fool the masses and redirect heat away from the POTUS. His slogan should be "Yes we can (but I won't)".
Sadly its damned near impossible to get exact figures without contacting them and dealing with their sales pitches so I can't sit here and crunch the numbers but unless they changed it Datacenter Edition gives you unlimited VMs per server and with the amount of cores and RAM the new servers hold (AMD is up to like 64 cores like I checked, can't remember how many you get in Intel, 48 maybe) and the fact that you get 10 years of updates for $615 a year RH would have to be seriously cheap to compete on price.
This is of course the network effect in action and why its hard to topple an entrenched player, they have enough customers to sell at a lower price, have all the admins thanks to being #1 for so long, have all the support of the third parties, frankly MSFT would probably have to double the cost to make it worth the pain of switching...but with Ballmer in charge doing something that boneheaded? Really not out of the question.
The only difference is that unlike the Android usage numbers I can wallpaper this page with currently spreading malware infections and of course there is that rotting elephant in the room where over half are running unsupported versions which are not only vulnerable to that recently reported major security flaw but thanks to the OEMs will NEVER get patched and will most likely be accessing appstore knockoffs run in China which are frankly dodgy to begin with.
So I'm sorry but Android is a security nightmare. This is the major downside of FOSS, the "free as in freedom" also means "Free to use unsupported versions and Google can't do shit" and Joe Average doesn't there are versions, just as when you ask them what is on their PC all they will ever say is "Windows". Hell just go to Walmart.com and see how many Android 2.x devices are being sold there right now, last time I walked through the local Wally World, just a week ago BTW, there were only TWO 4.x devices and a ton of 2.x and ALL of those are ripe for pwning.
So I'm sorry but even though I have an Android phone and love it I can see the current system is a major pwning waiting to happen and I'm just waiting for Google to get their own netsky or Code Red, its ripe for a major pwning and personally I'd say with all the 2.x devices a million is probably more conservative than what is reality.
So you suggest 2 browsers that send everything back to corporate, one of which frankly doesn't even run worth a shit on Windows, or a browser where their own devs have said on their website repeatedly their current focus is on MOBILE and NOT the desktop? Yeah, keep slurping that koolaid pal, BTW there AREN'T any addons on ANY of the alternatives I named, there is a button that lets you use Secure DNS, just as there is a button to tie Chrome to your Gmail, but if you actually tried them instead of mouthing off you would know this.
LOL look at the FOSSIe! I suggested over a dozen alternatives, ALL OF THEM FOSS except for Opera but because he is a foaming at the mouth religious lunatic he isn't goes "ZOMG u don't like teh Moz, u must be the debil!". Try reading dumbass, the source for every one of the alternatives is on their website, moron. BTW please keep it up, you make all FOSS users look completely batshit, I'm sure Apple and MSFT love you.
LOL and you don't think "security experts" won't be made into the next "code word" by the MSM? Ever since Ronnie Raygun dismantled the protections that kept a megacorp from owning all the media in an area the MSM has been the propaganda arm of the megacorps, see how quickly they went from talking about what was in the Wikileaks release to spending days talking about whether Assange is a douchebag or not, why? Because the same corps that own the media corps own defense contractors and you don't bite the hand that feeds.
So you can call 'em ducks for all it'll matter because within 2 years of choosing it duck will be in the same pile as pedo and terrorist, because you are gonna cost billionaires money and they aren't gonna have it. Frankly Stalin and the crazy Austrian would have killed to have a propaganda arm as effective as the western media corps.
Actually the guys at the FSF along with the major Linux players like Red hat and Canonical really should get together and bake a really nice cake for Steve Ballmer, because he is singlehandedly doing what Linux never could, completely destroying MSFT and killing Windows. From the "LULZ HAI I'm a cellphone, seen my appstore?" Windows 8 debacle to jacking the price of both home and server versions of Windows in a dead economy to burning Xbox with his retarded "hey lets bleed the gamers for more cash!" scheme, his pathetic leadership and Dilbert PHB obsession with Apple and the stock price is completely trashing the company.
You made a funny but the truth of the situation? Really isn't. Time and time again we have seen whistleblowers attacked by everyone from the government to the MSM and in the end it all comes down to money. By exposing their bullshit, be it ignoring laws, building defective by design products, or cutting corners on safety it costs the corps money to fix these issues, sometimes billions, and with the government here bought and paid for you can bet your soon to be worthless last dollar they WILL try to destroy those that expose this corporate douchebaggery as it costs the owners of the country money.
If Nader published "Unsafe at any speed" today he would probably be heckled by the press, sued by the corps, and have a dozen charges on him cooked up by the feds. Frankly you couldn't pay me enough to be a security researcher...which is of course the point, the chilling effect in action.
Really? Then you better not tells the guys at VLite who have been doing it since Win2K (formerly NLite for NT) or the guys at RT7Lite who have made a tool so simple your grandma can use it. Oh and FYI but you have been able to uninstall IE since XP SP2, its under Windows Components in Add/Remove on XP or Programs and Features on Vista on up.
So maybe you ought to actually try something before you go spreading FUD since its obvious you probably have touched a Windows machine since WinME considering how badly out of data your supposed info is. Oh and in case you are wondering Yes Virginia you CAN change Windows Shells, there are about a dozen free ones to choose from but I prefer AstonShell for their secure desktop which is light and easy peasy to lock down with GPOs.
So I'm sorry but the ONLY thing Linux has going for it is "free as in beer" and that is if and ONLY if your time is worthless, otherwise you get the "fun" of breaking updates or the "interesting challenge" of Black Screens Of Death thanks to Linux hanging onto a 40 year old client/server paradigm that hasn't been relevant for the vast majority in over 25 years. I'm sorry but there is no comparison, I can place Windows and OSX in the "Hairyfeet Challenge" and they'll both come out with flying colors, Linux will have at least one if not several drivers crapped on and wasted thanks to updates not caring about drivers. Don't say "If they were only in the kernel" because that is bullshit the kernel drivers are ONLY decent on relatively new and relatively popular devices, the rest are half baked and poorly maintained.
Now I could set down and show you mathematically why Linus' "Let the kernel devs do it" can never work in a billion years but since you are just gonna call me dirty names anyway why bother? I'm sure any response i get will just be the circular logic Linux fans love which is why I have all Linux articles blocked. isn't it funny how we give the FOSSies their own section yet that isn't good enough, they HAVE to come preach their religion in articles that have nothing to do with them? I think the fact that more people are willing to risk thousands in fines and even jail time to steal the other guy's OS rather than take yours ought to frankly be all that needs to be said, your product simply doesn't measure up, sorry.
Uhhhh...you just NOW figured this out? Them being more and more tied in has been SOP at Moz for awhile, its pretty dang obvious that like Canonical they are in the "show me the money!" phase instead of listening to users.
BTW for those that want a different browser, mind a suggestion? Try Comodo Dragon for those that like the Chromium based and Comodo Ice Dragon for those that prefer the Gecko way of doing things as not only does it have none of the phone home stuff (any and all extra features are opt in and both ask during install and can be turned on and off in settings if you change your mind) but the extra features are all based around increasing security, Dragon comes with PrivDog (can disable if you choose) to block tracking, both have the option of Comodo Secure DNS which uses the Comodo AV blacklists to block known phishing and malware sites, and if you want you can pair it with the also free Comodo Internet Security which will give both Dragon and Ice Dragon a second icon on your desktop which is virtual mode. In the VM the browser is completely sandboxed which since I've started giving this combo to my customers malware infections have dropped right off the chart, in fact I've not needed to do a single malware cleanup on any system running a Comodo browser and CIS.
This is one place where we have it sooooo much better than we ever did, because now we actually have choice, its no longer "Take Moz or IE or websites won't render right", now we have a wealth of options, nearly all free, so if you don't like FF, Chrome, or IE? There is Dragon and Ice Dragon, SWIron, Opera, Safari, Kmeleon, heck if you need a browser that will run on pretty much anything QTWeb runs on windows, *NIX and BSD, you have a wealth of choices so don't just take what you are given if it doesn't work for you, find one that fits you instead.
By that logic then all the Win9X machines rotting in the junkyard also count as installs as what matters is how many of them are being actually used and considering I have 3 Android devices in the trash and another dozen in sock drawers of various family members? I can tell you that plenty of those devices ain't in service no more chum.
Drinks get spilled, OEM refuses to update, phone is too old and slow, gets pwned by malware, lots of reasons to no longer use an Android device, just as there are plenty of reasons to toss an old Windows box but MSFT isn't trying to claim every Windows install is still in service and when i see something by a third party like netstat with some real usage numbers? THEN we'll talk, otherwise that's just press release bullshit.
Except a good 90% of their customers DO NOT upgrade every year and stay on the bleeding edge, hence why they went for this "fuck you pay me" route in the first place. i have customers with CS going back to CS3 and ya know what?
