  1. A consumer version? on DARPA Builds Smarter Version of Microsoft's Clippy · · Score: 4, Funny

A consumer version of a military app for a widely-used phone?

Anyone have a spare tin-foil hat?

  2. Things we can learn from this? on FOIA Documents Detail iPods Overheating, Catching Fire · · Score: 4, Funny

The nature of things hasn't changed.

  3. "not a typo" on The Speed Gamers Raise Over $26,000 For Charity · · Score: 1

Well of course it's not a typo. What are the odds of you mistyping, say, "$2,600" as "$26,000" with perfect comma positioning and the right numbers of zeroes to properly represent twenty six thousand dollars twice?

  4. Misunderstanding this, most likely on Making Cesium Atoms Do a Quantum Walk · · Score: 3, Interesting

Theoretically speaking, if we could get, say, an entire ship and all of its inhabitants to do this "quantum walk"...

wouldn't we be well on our way towards creating an improbability drive?

I'm probably hugely stretching this beyond what it means.

  5. w/r/t Windows on The Amazing World of Software Version Numbers · · Score: 3, Interesting

Windows 7 is NT version 6.1, but that's because of appcompat reasons only.

Microsoft frequently jumps build numbers before milestones (7000 for Beta 1 of Win7, 7600 for RTM)

Microsoft often picks arbitrary numbers for revision builds (used to be buildnum.0, now it's buildnum.16384 as the starting point. Example: Vista RTM is 6000.16386, meaning there were three compiles of build 6000)

What's needed is someone with lots of disposable funds who can embrace the internet as a means of hype and content distribution.

Obviously, no one else has picked it up, so if anyone rich happens to want to start a production label, now's a good time to catch the hearts of lots of bored internet addicts.

  8. The whole event was crap. on Apple's WWDC Unveils iPhone 3.0, OpenCL, Laptop Updates, and More · · Score: 0, Troll

This whole conference was crap. All Apple did was bash Windows, introduce a service pack for Leopard priced at 29USD, and introduce a phone which, well, is only evolutionary, and tell everyone in the US that tethering via AT&T isn't an option for god-knows-what-reason.

They also took out an ExpressCard slot from their MacBook Pros, worsened the battery situation on said laptops, and generally just ripped everyone off. What a waste of time.

What was with the Windows-bashing? They didn't even give a reason. All they said was that it's built on top of Vista... well, duh? Snow Leopard is built on top of Leopard. That's supposed to mean something? Apple is spending a good amount of effort trying to become the biggest troll on the planet... for what? What's the benefit? Too many of my friends were turned off by the unnecessary Windows-bashing; I guess if Apple was trying to win over the enterprise crowd, they did a good job of alienating them right from the start.

That's how all of my computer illiterate friends approach it, and they've never had problems.

Second, the default view for most folders in 7 is the details view, which means whether a file is an executable will be exposed to the viewer by default regardless of whether extensions are hidden.

By all means, edit this setting if you must, but realize that 7 has already taken a good number of steps to deal with the danger.

To be honest, the part which is more interesting is the fact that desertification will be stopped by using a wall. Sure, the Slashdot summary used bacteria as a hook, but in all honesty, the wall is more important than the bacteria anyway, which is why there's only a small mention of the bacteria in the source article.
