    No, that has nothing to do with my point. If I don't want to pay for a car, and take the bus instead of a car, you cant call me a car-thief, since I haven't stolen a car. I gave up on the music industry year ago, when the cd came and suddenly the price of music doubled. I haven't bought a music-cd in my life, and I do not intend to do so. I listen to the radio and I am fine with that. Beside that, copying a file is not the same as stealing.

    The obvious conclusion is that if people aren't willing to pay enough to make it a viable business model, the entertainment industry should look for another business model instead of trying to create artificial monopolies with the help of broken technology to make the failed business model viable.

    If they don't want their costumers to move away, they should help their costumers to integrate their products with others instead of expecting them to move to an all-Microsoft environment. They should not let their costumers wait months for patches that are market critical by Microsoft. Who want to do business with people lika that?

    No, I wrote 7 minutes to reboot Vista. 5 minutes to close it down and 2 minutes to boot. Besides that, I dont mind compiling my tools, but that is only necessary if you have the source, so I cannot Re-Compile.

    That said, most things work on Vista but not everything. So in order to take my assignments from helpdesk, I need another machine with XP or Windows 2000. I cannot choose tools always, and I cannot force other people to choose the tools I want.

    Debian is a beauty in this aspect. It comes with all the tools we need for building servers, upgrades are easy och stability good. There is no better Operating System.

    Now I am going on holidays, and wont waste more time here. ;)

    Yes we do, since reboot is needed for updates and hibernate doesnt handle login-scripts so we have to logout. Once a week I reboot. ;)

    Vista may be best for you, but I cannot understand why it takes 7 minutes to reboot a modern computer. Besides, my tools doesnt work on vista, so I have to use an other machine to do my work.

    I have been using Debian since 1995 in production and it has yet to disappoint me. For me, it is the best operating system around, and I would put it on top of the list!

    They may not go away tomorrow, but they can be quite expensive, so the problem is that if you have no choice you have no bargainpower. And I dont think it is such a good platform for web applications, and it is more expensive in those cases I know. The arguments I have heard in favour is that there is plenty of cheap consultants to be found and Microsoft is "the" industry standard. My former boss believed that if we run only Microsoft, we will deliver more for less. Well, we didnt.

    Nobody say they should drop them immediatly, we are just saying that free software rules and closed source sucks. Then everyone has to draw their own conclusions from that.
    I do not understand people that make mission-critical IIS-only webapplications, isnt that just stupid? Smart persons make sure that there are some emergency exit.

    I live in a small house in a suburb of Stockholm. I have a fibre in to my livingroom, with internet, cable and telephone. Me and my neighbours paid for the local net, we hooked up to the county network and we buy access from local companies. 100 Mb internet is 200 SEK/ month. We can deduct part of the cost from tax. It is subsidized, through tax and county net, and it is possible, in US as well. On the countryside it is different even here, as houses are very separated. I would not say the problems in US is very different than here, it is more that they trying to solve it without subsidies.

    If everyone ran Linux they would not have to log in as root in order to install smileys, and a virus would have to convince the user to make the malware executable. Ubuntu is perfectly usable without root privileges, and the fact that every distribution is a little different would make it more difficult to write malware than just make a windows version.

    It's not wise to have infected machines inside the firewall. ;)

    In this case it was the filter that didn't work

    In my opinion, valid adresses coming from the outside are not valid.
