  1. Comcast Needs Help on Comcast Drops Microsoft · · Score: 1

I'm not sure what article everyone else is reading, but I doubt if MSFT cares about this. Comcast just became our local cable provider (I'm not living in Washington) and DirectTV and DSL sales have spiked. It has to be the worst cable company I have ever seen.

  2. Business meets technology on Businesses Scramble To Stay Out of Google Hell · · Score: -1

This has to be one of the worst things for the internet that I have ever heard of. The internet is a GREAT way for small business to thrive and compete. I'm not sure if the individuals at Google understand the term "free market". I give it a year before there are claims of kickbacks. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends in some sort of class-action lawsuit. Or it will boost Yahoo revenue (assuming they aren't doing the same thing).

  3. This is why techies don't run businesses. on Seven Reasons Microsoft Loves Open Source · · Score: 1

Everyone stop, breathe, and let's look at it. I allow someone else to think of a possibly good idea and begin to build the model. I can look at the idea, refine or change it as I want to. Then I can integrate it into my strategy. EVERY large technology and scientific company in America (and actually the world) does this. How do you think the drug and biotech companies work. The only thing MSFT did was get smart about open source. If you can possibly profit off something, then why fight it. Technology is great but BUSINESS turns the world. One more thing, to people in technology, open source is "Free". To the CEO at a company that sells (insert product here) it is not. I sell my product and don't really care about developing the next driver or what have you.

  4. Re:Development and support are not free... on Why are Websites Still Forcing People to Use IE? · · Score: 1

You are absolutely correct. What the "technical" world is failing to realize is that the restor of the world views us as more of a outside tool and not a component. Take for example the way IT is viewed in compared to marketing/accounting/etc. departments in most companies. A company with a business decision to make will involve the other departments and IT last (if at all). What is always the a technically better solution doesn't always make the most business sense. And you can't pay a mortgage with microchips.

  5. Bogus survey on Survey Finds Few Intend to Upgrade to Vista · · Score: 1

There is an article on www.infoworld.com with BestBuy reporting strong demand for Vista. The article also mentions how Circuit City made the error of not keeping enough in stock. So let me see, an opinion poll vs. actual sales data. Which one do you think is accurate?

  6. A problem with DST in general on Linux Systems and the New DST · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually this isn't a problem with any OS or the computer industry. It is a problem with Daylight Savings Time. Man has been telling time for centuries and it wasn't until the DST mess that we started having issues. This is on the same lines as the US not using the metric system.

  7. No, You can't be sued but your new employer can. on Can You Be Sued for Quitting? · · Score: 2, Insightful

First, if you didn't sign a non-compete or other contract then YOU are not contractually obligated to anything. Texas, like most states, is an work-at-will state. So you can come and go as you please. Now, if you have knowledge of sensitive company information that your new employer can use against your current employer, then Company A (current) can sue Company B (new). For example, Wal-Mart was able to block some key people leaving them to go to work for a competitor. The issue was that the employees had inside knowledge of price contracts Wal-Mart had with certain vendors. The federal court deemed this sensitive company information and blocked it. Microsoft was able to do the same. However, if they sue you, then you have a strong countersuit. It is illegal to attempt to block a person's employment without being able to prove that the move will be detrimental to the company. You could make out well with pain and suffering. I would contact the EEOC and talk to someone.

  8. Need for change. on NASA Will Go Metric On the Moon · · Score: 1

I look at this article and it pretty much sums up why the US society and schools are falling behind the rest of the world. We should be using the metric not just for science but for all facets of life. We should start sending emails to everyone in Congress for a mandatory change. With enough emails, they will listen. Especially if they can't work because they are flooded with them.

Actually, David Litchfied is very familiar with both products. Do you remember that "Oracle is unbreakable" campaign. He was able to dispel that and Oracle sued him for it because he posted his findings on the net and didn't take it to them first. He had a valid case and the "unbreakable" myth got dropped fast.

  10. Re:Benchmarks you've seen on VMWare Rolls Out Their Largest Product Release · · Score: 2, Interesting

You are correct. VMWare does not allow it's products' benchmarks to be published. This is probably the most dishonest thing I've seen. They claim it's better but you have to take their word for it. That's a laugh. I am a Database Administrator and I fought the battle with the Systems Administrators over using VMWare. I had used it before in a previous job and it wasn't ready for the datacenter. My assessment is that it is still not ready for the datacenter. The performance is not up to par and I dare VMWare to prove that it is by allowing a 3rd party to benchmark it against native.

I think you have to ask yourself "What really matters".. Obviously, these machines are used to PRIMARILY run educational software. Whatever will get this accomplished is your best option. If the software is untested on linux, do not go that route. You'll be hindering the education of the kids. I worked for a VAR and we would partner with a school and give computer, software, maintenance time, etc.. So you might want to try looking for some assistance somewhere.

I understand the love for Linux (or rather hate of MS). To each his own. However, in this situation it is a common problem that companies are having with Linux. 2 weeks to configure and deploy. Come on, that's ridiculous. This guy had a business need and needed to get the job done. If you can't understand that, then you'll be unemployed 6 months after convincing management to make the switch to linux and you still haven't gotten the entire enterprise up and running. Also, and read this slowly so that you don't pass out: LINUX CRASHED.. Now, the hardware was blamed and then the administrator. What's next, code fairies???
