Why would most people care about fully controlling their computer?
While I get your point, I still think you're an abysmal idiot. People care about having control over their computer the instant it does something they don't want it to.
I'm joking (sarcasm), btw. My second cousin is an author, he writes non-fiction. I mostly read non-fiction. I used to work at an Ingram book Co. warehouse since then the only place I've found to buy books has been amazon, however, when I worked there, I had access to many books. I have a full library for chess and drawing. A good chunk of my social science (true crime, etc) and political books have been boxed. I've got a few D&D books too, I like to read my periodicals when I can too.
wrong kind of intelligence. I'm talking the "I" in CIA, in this case "IQ" means approximately dick. Having a very good Bull Shit sniffer is extremely important (examine everything with the collective paranoia of poe and the logic of a vulcan, hire klingons for the dirty work). The ability to generate BS is imperative. Personally, I would start a drug cartel to keep the enemy busy - evidence is fucking easy as long as you give the perception of generating money. This is generally, beyond the scope of normal police work, not that the police don't make very good practice of intelligence.
I'm an armchair "conspiracy theorist", I have a second cousin that's a pro, and I'm well read. Sometimes, you can call me a chicken-hawk (sort of), but mostly, I like to think of myself as someone that's done a lot of research and analysis, that offers "civilly professional opinions". And yes I've been to mental health for paranoia, I think it looks good on my resume.
So, lets say you spend months torturing the wrong person? Do you let them go? Let them back to their people so they can tell everyone what hideous hell awaits them whether innocent or guilty? Fuck no! you bury that shit, you either A) never let them out of prison OR B) finish it. The best case scenario here is where you have executioners and torturers in a total disconnect. The torturer thinks the innocents go free, the executioners think only the guilty are exterminated. But outside of a perfect world, the only thing that holds the soldiers' belief in upstanding behavior is denial.
So, knowing how it works, I know that if torture is going to be used against the enemy (whether innocent or guilty) the innocent will develop plans fashioned around protecting their loved ones, and the guilty will fashion plans to look innocent. What you get is a despotic snowball where both the guilty and innocent rat out their friends in order to protect their families and co-conspirators. Forcing the interrogating force to lock up or kill more and more of the wrong people. (possibly developing a paranoia that all co-conspirators are blood related - the interrogator will sense that everyone is lying about the same thing.)
If I were guilty I would go to the smartest innocent "friend" I have and make a deal that if either of us are captured we will protect our families. I would develop a wild goose chase complete with corroborating evidence, eventually framing my buddy or an enemy. I would instruct all of my closest recruits to do the same (creating more corroboration in a predatory fashion). Fear would drive my friend to do unspeakable things, he at the same time would assume I was under that same pressure of fear - he would be wrong. Spies often work by using people that do NOT know anything of value. Hell if I was a spy I'd set shit up and call the damn interrogators just to keep them busy. Torture is a crude tactic in the intelligence game - it only works against those that are bad at playing the game. What's more, is if your enemy is bad at playing the game, why do you need it?
At first glance, I knew what was said. I wasn't sure if the word was accurate, but I knew what was said (having heard the word "moot" ought to do it). -> the boycott was doomed, a fruitless exercise. A small stretch to add something of value to my understanding of English. (which, isn't all that great, anyways) But, I'd be willing to bet the both of you excel at scrabble, where the rest of us don't.
"It's okay for a rich octogenarian to court, wed, and live with an 18 year old, but a 27 year old with a 12 year old is wrong... and we generally say that without consideration of benefits or harm to either party. Harm is assumed to be happening, or assumed to have happened or to happen in the future."
You're a fucking lunatic man. You seriously need to lay off the LSD, cause your perception of reality is getting just a little too far out there. I'd like to point out that in the case of the octogenarian courting the 18 year old it is often the elder individual that needs to be protected. The difficult part here is that the older person in the relationship is often far better at intellectually defending their portion of the relationship, even though it may be bad for them. The child on the other hand would often be expected to scream in court (defending the relationship) that everyone else was just stupid and didn't understand, while proceeding to throw themselves on the floor in a temper tantrum. The child may enjoy the relationship and the "perceived" benefits they receive from it but that child is in no way capable of weighing all the consequences of their decisions. What happens when the immature 12 year old sprouts pubic hair and gets dumped? Seriously, you can't see this shit? What the FUCK is wrong with you? You propose a world where all women are brought up as trophy wives, this is flat out bad for all of us you douche bag. At one point in history it made sense, but everything you do this day in age that stunts a child from reaching a full and sophisticated level of maturity is a GODDAMNED STEP BACKWARDS. You're fucked in the head man, and you seem to be talking yourself into something that is not healthy at all.
In a all the years I've posted to slashdot I have never bitched about a moderation, until now. Seriously, Internet Explorer lost market share because it sat there, unimproved, for years. I'm very certain that Microsoft is looking at XP vs. Vista and saying "we've got to look innovative, Now!", I mean I honestly think that most current Linux distros are way more advanced than XP, Mac is more advanced than XP, and if XP looks better than Vista, what the fuck do you think Microsoft is thinking when they schedule a release date for windows 7 (oops! ok, I get it now) next year. I think that if Microsoft doesn't get something out next year, they *will* lose market share, and more of it the longer this situation stands. XP is good enough, but when you can get something good enough plus real tangible perks (unlike a Vista deployment), it's a no-brainer - CIOs are NOT going to let their budgets dry up.
If they offer XP for too long, Linux and Mac will begin to look significantly better, not to mention projects like Wine and Reactos are being allowed valuable catch up time the longer Vista sits rotting on the vines. Vista like all Microsoft projects is a forced upgrade, if the upgrade does not occur then there is no vendor lock-in, no lock-in, no Microsoft. Microsoft is stuck between a rock and a hard place now and it shows prominently with rumors of Windows 8 looming in the intarwebs.
Just for a little disclosure here where I say:
I don't think it's fair to say that even 98% of the nude photos uploaded by children on myspace should be considered pornographic, they don't belong there, but I don't think it's pornography.
I don't think kids should be taking nude pictures of themselves, I just don't think they should be charged with distributing child porn for doing so. (I know how some people can't read a forum thread around here)
Oh, come off it man. There's all kinds of stories posted on slash relating to IP and the Law. Plus this guy obviously doesn't know anymore than the rest of us, so maybe he's just looking for another goob that's been there. I think there's been some good advice around here. Personally, I'd go to a paralegal, but I don't think he's looking to spend any cash. So, someone that might have personal experience is really the next place to go. If you don't like it why not just GTFO?
I don't know what you mean by the word "for", but usually, your corporate overlords own the thoughts in your head if they happen on company property and you signed some crap you didn't read when you got hired. Why? What did you do buddy?
,quote>The arrogance necessary to place yourself in a position where something is seemingly obvious to you, but not to professionals who have devoted their lives to the study of the subject, amazes me.
You arrogant bastard, you really thought I didn't know I was acting like an ass? I'm a professional, of course I know what I'm doing.
Do we really only perceive biologists as madmen who want to do evil experiments for the heck of it?
My sister's a microbiologist and I like to say that, Yes, they are all madmen (and women) that want to do evil experiments. (please don't tell her I said that, puhleaze!)
How about virtual robot war. Robots Vs. Robots, robot breaks the front line and reaches people you lose, it could be an interesting experiment in economic warfare, plus we get to watch huge friggin' robots fight on the nightly news. Or as a Law of War you could say robots only target robots and serve in medical and infrastructure related roles, but really the only way I see that you can argue for a law restraining robots from combat is because of their ability to fight 24/7 without food, sleep, and other niceties.
The first link on my search returned TIME magazine's article from skylab a good read.
At the Houston center, Skylab's final orbit (No. 34,981) looked ideal to Harlan, since it was over the ocean and sparsely populated areas.
I suppose this being a spy satellite the "final orbit" is likely to be over populated areas and a maybe a bit less likely to land in the ocean, unless they were primarily spying on boats.
Anyways, it's a good read and puts aside several of my original optimisms.
that was essentially the source of my flippant attitude without reading the article, though some AC said there was someone hit by Sky-Lab, according to the article that would have been in australia in 1979 http://www.google.com/search?&q=skylab+australia+1979+deaths/, I'm reading right now, but found no short descriptions in the top ten that matched what I was looking for. I do think compensation for this sort of thing is in order.
After reading the article, I guess a good chunk of it will pass through, but historically these things tend to land in the ocean. There also might be some toxic materials on there but they can't comment. I think it's more about letting people know before it happens rather than letting people find out they didn't tell anyone.
Call me a pessimist but somehow I think it's not 100% art being uploaded by kids to myspace.
That may be a fair assessment, but I would hardly say a child's first few attempts at looking sexy or being sexy should be considered a nose dive into the world of hardcore pornography. IANAL, but it seems to me like the interpretation of child pornography laws is a bit skewed in these cases. It's not considered child molestation when a child masturbates for the first time and historical attempts at punishing children for masturbating (addictive behaviors aside) have been considered highly damaging to that child's self image and future sex life. I can't imagine the world image some of these children develop when being punished so harshly for what is akin to a type of masturbation, or worse signs of a disturbing sexual sophistication. It hardly seems fair to punish them for growing up in a world they don't quite understand yet. I tend to think that charges of public indecency would be far more appropriate unless the child was actively trying to garner the interest of an adult. For instance a child that lies about their age and sends pictures to adults in order perpetuate a romantic situation or for the receipt of money might be an accurate application of child pornography laws, but still may result in the overaggressive punishment of a child that likely would do far better with some counseling sessions and remedial education.
Then you have to take a look at the type of nude pictures you see uploaded by adults to myspace. You get things like vague nipple shots, wet tee shirts, spanking photos, and nude shots where the "essentials" are covered. All of these, while sexual in nature, are hardly anything I would personally consider pornographic. I don't think it's fair to say that even 98% of the nude photos uploaded by children on myspace should be considered pornographic, they don't belong there, but I don't think it's pornography.

I've never heard of it before, but I can only assume that it's as physically demanding as it is mentally : )

Wait a minute, this could be a selling point for OSS. Imagine, no more initialing thousands of pages of code upon sale!!!

Doesn't matter, they're going to claim it was pummeled by China's space junk.
is this going to contribute to space junk, hit my house, or just burn up on the way in?
