  2. Easy way to cancel AOL (seriously) on Disconnecting · · Score: 3, Insightful

When I lived in Arizona, I had a friend who worked for AOL. According to the TOS, if you cuss out a support rep 3 times, you're in violation of the TOS and will be terminated. Apparently the way some people cancel is by sending three e-mails to tech support, all full of profanities.

I tried it, and sure enough, it works. Just don't expect to be able to use the same credit card to sign up for AOL again... But then again, why would you want to? :)

  3. Mars bacteria surviving on Earth??? on Mars Exploration Must Consider Contamination · · Score: 1

Ok, I'm just a simple geek. I'm not biologist by any stretch of the imagination. But, this seems a little odd to me. If we were to take bacteria from Earth to Mars, I would imagine it would die in a matter of minutes, if not seconds, in the Martian atmosphere. Shouldn't the same hold true if we were to bring back some bacteria from Mars?

  4. The Borg on Remote Controlled Rats · · Score: 1

Suddenly the Borg doesn't seem as scary now that I know they will all just be rodents.

Maybe Species 8472 is just exterminators/pest control?

  5. It depends on what you use it for . . . on Company Paid Training? · · Score: 1

Sit back and think about it for a minute. If it is something you would personally use the money for, then go for it. If, on the other hand, you are just trying to get out of the office for a while and spend some of the company's money, then you probably shouldn't.

If you received the training you expected and really got something out of it, then it was worth the money, whether it will come out of your pocket or your company's.

  6. Voltron! on Transformers On the Move Again · · Score: 1

The transformers were really neat... Until Voltron came along! I think it would be neat if they did something like this for Voltron instead.

My little cousin in almost 11. A few years ago, he discovered some old Voltron toys lying around somewhere, and he fell in love with them right away. Voltron is timeless!

  7. A Not-so-graceful tactic on "Industry Standard" Paycuts in IT? · · Score: 1

At the company that I just left, our president actually sent out a memo during the budget process asking who would be willing to take a paycut. Although not explicitly stated, the gist of the e-mail was that if you volunteered to take the paycut, you wouldn't be hit as hard when the cuts were actually handed out, and that you had a better chance of not being laid off.

Bear in mind that this company pays squat, and is small to begin with.

We figured it out that on average, if everyone was willing to take a 5% paycut, it would barely save one job. To make a long story short, nobody took the voluntary paycuts. :)

  9. The Nerdulas on Nebula Award Winners · · Score: -1, Flamebait

In related news, the Nerdulas are also out! The winning novel is A Condom Nose, a SF/Smut backwoods-standalone in a series of six books about an interstellar conflict between FirstPosters and GoatSecxers. The author, CowboyNeal, is a psycho....

  11. Cisco's Security Certs on IT Security Certifications? · · Score: 1

Being the Cisco bigot that I am, I would go with the Cisco route (no pun intended).

Cisco offers the Cisco Security Specialist 1 certification, and the Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional (CCIP) with a Security elective.

    Just my dos centavos.

  12. Tech Support & O'Reilly Books on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 1

Like a lot of people, I started off doing good ol' tech support for an ISP. However, while the rest of the techs were playing Quake, I had my nose buried in O'Reilly books and played with various flavors of *NIX. Then, I got lucky. Someone finally noticed that I knew my stuff.

I worked part-time as tech support and part-time as a Jr. Sys Admin for a while. Eventually, I went down the networking road instead, though. :)
