  1. Re:The need for money outweighs the need for digni on Leonard Nimoy to Play Spock in Next Star Trek Movie · · Score: 1

I'm so disgusted with this trend in Sci-Fi recently. I don't know about you, but I have NO INTEREST IN PREQUELS! I already know the story, and as a fan who has spent years caring about the characters, I want to know what happens next. I think these people who have these franchises are too afraid to go where Battlestar Galactica is going - treating the viewer with respect and dignity while telling a gripping story that dares to actually move towards a natural conclusion. I'm tired of people insisting that we tread water with these franchises, I want to see the fall of the Federation and the rise of the Klingon Empire, I want to see new crews and tense space battles where something more than just the main character's hair gets out of sorts. In short, I want to see a continuation of TNG (preferably starting with that crew as a segue to what's next in the story) where life is not perfect and everything is on the line. Am I alone in this?? NO MORE PREQUELS!!!! MOVE THE STORIES FORWARD!!!!

  2. Why? on OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X Alpha Released! · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Look, I know I don't even have any karma to burn and this may start some flames, but... Why? What's the point of this? The Microsoft Office Student/Teacher edition can be purchased readily from Apple's online store for $149 for the full version of Office. If you can't afford $149 for your productivity either:

    A) Your time isn't worth any money and you should reconsider what you're using it for
    B) You can't afford it, so how can you afford the computer that you're using
    C) You just have no desire to pay for software and/or hate Microsoft for XYZ reasons.

Obviously all of those items are problems, but for the price and how good Office is for the Mac, I think it's quite a value. Besides, "free" is relative, this is alpha software that's 5 years AT BEST behind Microsoft Office. I think that Google's Apps are much more promising as a Microsoft competitor than a buggy copy-cat of what you can already get for a relatively low cost.

    Flame on.

  4. Re:Apple should support this. on Windows on Intel Macs - Yes or No? · · Score: 1

Because they'll all want to be certified as "Universal," just like how everyone wants to be "Made for iPod." If this is executed correctly, there's no longer any reason for people to put up with Windows. The consumer will demand applications that are not cumbersome to use, and soon they'll be writing them for Mac OS X only. Apple is suddenly no stranger to dominating a market. They did it with the iPod and now they're moving in for the kill.

And how much do you think that all of those copies of Mac OS X that would be given away for free would be valued at?
  7. iPod was never the big news on TV On Mobiles: Not Yet There? · · Score: 1

Contrary to what the focus has been by all of the news about "Portable Video," the "one more thing" that Steve focused on was not the fact that the iPod could play videos, but rather the fact that Apple had suddenly blown the door open for video content distribution. Ignoring the fact that they only have a few shows on their site right now to buy, the fact that they have ANY shows at all to buy at a very reasonable cost in an "a la carte" format is what people need to be focusing on. The fact that you can take it with you on your iPod is just an added bonus.

This comment baffles me. Why on EARTH would you still want to use POP3 mail? I manage an Exchange server as well as my own POP3 server and now use neither for my personal email in favor of Gmail. Why? Simply because I have so many computers that I use! With Gmail I have pretty much unlimited space, the ability to SEARCH my email and actually find what I'm looking for (ever tried to find something in Outlook that you've filed away a year ago?), and I always have ALL of my email on any computer I use! I don't have to think "Wait, I sent this at home on my Mac, but I wish I had it at work on my PC in Outlook... Blah blah." Those days are gone, and frankly... GOOD RIDDANCE! Just my opinion, of course.

  11. What you put in your mind SHAPES WHO YOU ARE! on Views on Violence in Video Games · · Score: 2, Funny

One of the most fundamental facts of human behavior is that we are literally shaped by what we choose to put into our minds. We become what we dwell up and it does affect how we act whether you will acknowledge it or not. While I'm not saying that playing a game will make you a killer, it does beg the question... If a 30 second spot can sell you on a product, what can hours upon hours of interactive, life-like entertainment sell you on?

  12. Most will deny, but it's true... on Grand Theft Auto Led Teen to Kill · · Score: 1

While I'm not saying that GTA made this kid kill, or that the game is responsible for his actions, we need to be aware that the things that we put into our mind DO shape us and impact our personalities, whether we intend for them to or not. Have you ever memorized a song without consciously being aware of learning the lyrics? Also take into account that if advertising wasn't so effective, then billions of dollars wouldn't be spent on it every year. And, if a 30 second spot on TV or the Radio can sell you on a product, what can hours upon hours of immersive gameplay sell you on? A lifestlye? Something to think about.
