I really hate the anti-spam spin of this post. This topic could be much more interesting than the standard Slashdot fodder (No-Call-List, SCO, SPAM, etc.)
In this article Cringley mostly discussed how the Taguchi method could be applied to marketing on e-bay, not SPAM.
Another useful place, not mentioned in the article, would be Google Ad-Words. It's very cheap and easy to set-up multiple ad campaigns and Google has a great tracking and statistics tool that easily allows you to try out tests like this to build effective advertisements. Very applicable in my mind.
Another place that I could see this method being used could be user interfaces. Trying out various themes/layouts and tracking response times and clicks needed to accomplish specified goals could be an efficient way of building stronger/easier user interfaces.
I am not sure if this idea would work... but I think it's silly to dismiss this methodology simply because it could be used by spammers.
"Robert Metcalf [the inventor of Ethernet] says that if something comes along to replace Ethernet, it will be called "Ethernet", so therefore Ethernet will never die. Unix has already undergone several such transformations."

Here is the page in the manuscript with the quote.
My apologies for both the recursive quoting and name dropping.
Please call me when they have released the "Truly Final Director's Cut of the Entire Trilogy with No More Special Editions in the Pipeline to Bleed You Dry With, We Promise - Special Edition - Widescreen" DVDs.
Once they do, I will wait 9 months and THEN buy it.
Of course, I am just bitter because I bought a lousy Fullscreen edition of Fellowship by accident. Lousy, no good, pan-and-scan.
Why are they putting third-party code in their operating system?
It's either that or they allow applications to access the OS's memory and that would just be plain asinine AND, technically, still their fault so the 50% statement goes out the friggin window. So it can't be that.
Are there any good resources about learning how to 'short' stocks? Is it basically just betting that a stock will go down in a specified timeframe? Will shorting a stock also put immediate downward pressure on it?
Sorry for the TOTALLY unrelated post. These questions have nothing to do with SCO at all... I was just curious about stocks and stuff.
Thanks for the help in advance,
Well, to be fair Gator and its ilk usually gets installed in the background as part of some other operation that the user is involved in.
You're right, this software does prey on the ordinary person's lack of computer knowledge. I have gotten to play the "hero" many times by clearing off gator, bonzai buddy, etc. for friends and family and "miraculously" speeding up their machine for them.
I am also probably the worst driver I know.
But you gotta agree, taking cheapshots at people who aren't fully confident or comfortable using a PC is a quick way to gets some votes around here.:)
I am a firm believer that there is a mind-body connection when it comes to chronis pain. Whether that pain is in your back, shoulders, or in your wrists.
I recommend that anyone suffering from constant pain look into Dr. Sarno's books on TMS. It worked like a charm for me...

(why is Science Friday on at such an odd time?)
I am pretty sure you can listen to any Talk of the Nation, including their Science Friday shows, on their website.
Here's a calendar of past shows:

wxWindows is a great C++ framework but if you are looking for *RAPID* development then check out python and wxWindows. It is a combination that will be gaining serious steam once more people look at it! check out wxPython : alldunn.com

How am I suppose to play Duke Nukem Forever on my wife's new Mac?

This sort of disagreement can only be resolved with a fork.

Damn, I was thinking about buying this book, but it only got a AA++ rating.
I don't buy any books that don't get at least a AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++ rating.
Should people that install Gator (or Gator-clones) on their computer be allowed to drive moving trucks?
Well, as you know, he wrote about geeks for a while... until they turned on him and ripped apart everything he wrote.
So, he decided to focus his "perceptive" abilities writing books on a much less crtical crowd.
That's a good boy Jon, good boy.

Now there just needs to be a standard means
for packing all the multimedia and structured
