Ubuntu verion numbers are the date when they are released. For example, 5.10 was released in October of 2005. Generally the versions are spaced six months apart, so the next would have been 6.04, but it has been delayed till June, so it will be 6.06. A version of 7.x would be in the year 2007, on the xth month.
Auralia can help with ear training (intervals and such), and Musition can help with learning music theory. I have used them both once to try them but never fully used them. Their normal use is for teachers to have students use to record their progress, but you can use it solo. When I took a music theory class we used a program called Finale to compose music, however it won't very much help with learning how to play an instrument.
I play guitar and for the most part I do not use software to aid in practice. I have tuner software (Enable Encore) that I can plug into which I occasionally use, and music composing software (Guitar Pro 5, G7, and Finale).
When beginning with an instrument it's best just to practice reading music manually. In the case of guitars, that would mainly be tabs. Guitarists much prefer tabs (finger positions on six lines for the six strings) when learning music as chords can contain many double notes and would look messy on a staff.
Anyway, with violin, you'll be reading staves. I'm not sure how much you know so I'll to to help a little: violins use the G clef, so the lines on the staff from bottom up are E, G, B, D, and F; and the spaces are F, A, C, and E. The strings on the violin from biggest to smallest are G, D, A, and E. Practice by saying a note and playing it, then move onto reading simple songs and playing them. I'm not used to fretless instruments so I have no idea how hard that is.:P
I doubt my advice there helped, but as for the software part: There isn't much that will help you learn how to play an instrument. It's best just to read music and practice playing it until you get the muscle memory that will assist you in both playing faster and playing with less thought.
Taking into account the fact that even mentally or physically disabled humans still reproduce, I doubt that Homo sapien will die out. If for some reason the environment gradually changes so that only a fraction of humans can survive, by that time we will all, either by genetics or other technology, be able to survive. That's not good in my opinion since we are already overpopulated in several areas, but I can see it happening.
IANAL but AFAIK all distros could provide some sort of codec, however they want to be able to freely distribute their distro. Those without the codec are more open, and those with it have to be more strict on their distrobution.
It seemed like I hit puberty way earlier than my peers. I remember in 4th or 5th grade having a deep voice (has not gotten deeper since...) and being taller than the other kids. Now everybody is about as tall as me. Contrary to the article however, I saw myself as being mature and being able to handle fights, drugs, and relationships. It's mostly just in your mind in my opinion. If you think you're bigger and better than the other kids than that's your problem (or it could be nature's way of dealing with things).
After using the international date format for about a year now, I always get confused when I see dates in shorthand format. For example, 05-02-06 could be any combination of May, February, June; 5, 2, 6; and 2005 and 2006. I think it's usually MM-DD-YY in the United States, but people aren't even consistent in my area.
I really wish people would just use YYYY-MM-DD. As far as I know nobody ever uses YYYY-DD-MM so there wouldn't be any problems. Plus when you use dates like that it's easier to organize things, both by hand and with computers.
Well it's going to need protection against that obesity virus, or else it will get pretty bloated pretty soon, and it also better watch out for that practical mono.
"Unneeded" is relative. What if 400 out of 410 people feel that they don't need that one file, and for me it's important? If you can you should at least just put it on a lower priority (download it after the main files), not just forget about it. I don't use Azureus so I'm not sure what it does.
I actually laughed at that. :)
Actually my entire house is powered by solar and geothermal energy.
I'm pretty sure Google would ignore its own ads. Not so sure about other search engines though.
The point is to prevent network sniffers, not stop Google from looking at your stuff.
I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.4 with no exotic extensions, and when I press the back button, it reloads GMail.
Dammit! I knew that I just couldn't think of it... I even have all five books of the trilogy.
What is that from? I can't remember...
10 * 4800 / 100 = $480 per DVD?
I hope you mean cost per gigabyte...
As long as you don't get the diuretic meal...

That's a really good quote. Mind if I steal it from you?
That's not the opening scene. That's the opening sequence for the new television show that's being produced.
Distribution, not distrobution. It was in my muscle memory. :P

I know about that one, and the other instance was probably the one a replier to your post mentioned. Thanks for the link too.
I've heard at least twice on the show itself that Springfield is in Kentucky.

Totally off-topic, but:

Plumbers should especially pay attention.

Apparently it has something to do with Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
AFAIK movie film has a much higher "resolution" than most TVs could display.
