Certainly you must be able to see how someone already inclined to violence could look at these verses and get the message that it's perfectly justifiable to kill...
I hear this argument all the time from people like Jack Thompson. Do you feel like censoring everything that could lead to violence? I'm not asking to be snarky, I just think it's kind of ironic coming from fellow slashdotters;-)
I can understand how it could be confusing for someone coming to it all without the background that some of us obviously have. Here is that particular issue in a format you might understand.
If you take the limit of the Ten Commandments, you get the commandments from Jesus in the new testament which are:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. --Mark 12:30, 31 (KJV)
In essence, God knew that his perfect law (love Him and one another) was beyond people's ability, especially at the level of civilization man had thus far achieved. Instead he gave them a small subset, enumerating specifics which would encourage both piety and progress (you'll note that none of the above quoted passages made the "big ten.")
I guess what I and at least a few others here are getting at is this: the Bible is very often misquoted. This is not the Bible's fault. In most cases, the problem exists between the book and the chair.
I don't follow your statement that the game represents Christianity. Christianity is as you recall based on the teachings of Jesus. You will find these sections of the Bible in what's called the "new testament." You'll have to be pretty slippery to figure out a way to justify killing nonbelievers from the new testament... so slippery that really your mind is already made up and all you're really looking for is justification.
Disagreeing with the "old testament" is not considered problematic to mainstream Christians because it is a historical record/poetry/etc. It is not a reflection of God's current interface or policy. The nutjobs who use the Bible to justify their hatred of others (any others) are invariably taking the Bible out of context. Somewhere in there (new testament) it is says: 'If someone says,
"I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God [must] love his brother also.' --1 John 4:20
This would put the kibosh on any attempt to justify hating _anyone_ for any reason.
But you're right, it's hard to see past the ignorant yahoos who yell the loudest.
I don't understand...the GPL is allows one to use software freely, but with some restrictions. If people disagree with the principles behind the GPL, we here have no problem saying "don't like it? don't use it?" But when some group says "you can use some of our bandwidth for free, just don't surf porn." We go: "don't force your rules on me!" Come on now, no one's forcing you to use it.
You know, I think that blocking porn on this thing is a great idea. I understand there's always going to be false positives and other problems, but it would keep the network free from bandwidth abusers. If anyone wants porn, there's nothing stopping them from signing up with an isp to get it. This would be a free service (the bottom speed anyway), they don't have to provide anything at all.
If it works, it'll be extremely useful. Combine it with either webmail or webmail via pop3, and my parents'll never have to pay for an isp again. Unfortunately, it'll also probably kill the local wisp. Which would be quite a shame, those guys have nearly succeeded in covering the last mile here where I live. And they're affordable too (ie, they're not making much off it.)
Seriously, there are three major chipset vendors. This article should read "ATI, NVIDIA and VIA Launch new chipsets for Socket AM2." Thanks for the link.
I have _heard_ (and read independant reviews) that the Volkswagon diesel engines are getting ~48-54 mpg highway. I don't know what your buying criteria is, but these are cars the I'm looking at buying.
Via? Am I the only one who still likes Via chipsets? Does anyone know what has been happening with their offerings lately? The last chipset from them that I've heard of was the KT890, and none of the vendors I frequent carried it.
Hmm. Apparently, pointing out that someone is being naive is trolling.
But hey, at least I logged in to post, otherwise I might be going to jail instead of just obscurity. Or even better: the "troll" moderation annoys me, and I have no idea who did it. Take it back you criminals!
Hey everybody, guess what? Most of you are just fine. You're probably either teenagers (it's normal to feel not normal as a teen), or you're under-socialized--that is, you're slightly geeky, you're inclined to overanalyze things and you don't know enough different kinds of people to be able to compare yourself accurately. Once you've gotten to know different types of people, you'll find out you're quite normal.
I just don't think everyone's some misunderstood, tragic genius. I know I'm not anyways.
because we all know competing on the basis of the quality of software (in the massachusettes case) instead of proprietary format lock-in is really anti-competitive...
I've observed "phenomena" like you've described as well. I'm in my current line of work because apparently, I can drive out the demons that cause system crashes:)
I decided to start earning some money every time someone says: "Thats funny. It's not doing it now." And once I've touched it, it rarely goes back...
That's really strange. As far as reliability goes, I'm much more leery of nVidia. I got burned several times with various vendors nForce2 implementations. My old KT266a and my current KT880 were / are rock-solid and quite fast. I have also had issues with several nForce3 boards. nForce4 has been stable so far.
In some cases, it might not even have anything to do with the chipset: some brands are just more reliable than others.
Surely you're kidding. His waist is 32, his inseam is 36. Did you somehow reverse the numbers when you read his post?
Incidentally, I have the same problem as this guy: waist = 30, inseam = 34. It helps to know what brands fit, it takes the uncertainty out of buying online.
You're right. Nobody should do anything. Thanks for pointing out the futility in life.
...*BANG*
Seriously, while the gp post doesn't necessarily have the answer, surely there's something better than the way things are now. I mean, I hope there is...
Why on earth should what you care about be a factor in this?
Because it's his Internet you want to alter. And mine, and lots of other peoples too.
And it's couldn't care less. You sound like a fucking idiot when you get it wrong.
This post got modded insightful? When people resort to this kind of name-calling it means they have nothing more of substance to say. Flamebait in my book.
Call me a cynic, but I'm less inclined to think that the jury's perception of the lawyers involved had anything to do with OJ getting off the hook and Scott Peterson getting convicted. OJ had been a popular (remember "the juice is loose"?) celebrity-type person with money that everyone thought was guilty, while Scott Peterson was some nobody that everyone thought was guilty.
Switchfoot makes some good pop-style rock music. If you listen to rock on the radio, you've probably already heard some of their music.
Disclaimer: they are Christian artists that make music. Note that I didn't say "Christian music." They said once (on an AOL interview, I think) that they don't use their faith to sell their music or vice-versa.
All that aside, I'm a big fan of Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, etc. and I like their newest album (Nothing is Sound) as well as the one before that (The Beautiful Letdown). I haven't heard any of their earlier music though.
Some have replied to your question saying "don't buy, cause it'll prove to Sony that DRM cd's are ok." But TFA mentions that the DualDisc doesn't have the copy protection on it...ymmv

'are cars the' --> 'are the cars'
previewing didn't help...

Sorry, the last one I _bought_ was the KT890, the last one I heard of was the KT900.

You might want to visit the real world sometime. Despite your apparent inexperience with it, I suspect you live there.

m I've not tried any of them, but this one looks the most polished. YMMV, knock yourself out, etc.

Actually, every calculator I've ever had didn't use base 2, but base 10. And there are vast swaths of numbers that simply aren't available.
Finally a conversation where my numerical analysis class paid off!
