You should be, especially considering the possibility of hearing loss. (1,439 links to fear mongering "health news" articles omited for the betterment of all mankind.)

Wise cracks aside, you have a very good point. The real quality of life is what's important, and while technogadgets make life more fun, more enjoyable, they are not really a true sign of an improving soceity. And you bring up some of the indicators that are, especially education.

Besides, it's not like the technogadgetry here in America is all that beter than everywhere else in the developed world. Hell, I live within 10 miles of Lowell, MA, and Nashua, NH, and my cell reception is so bad, I cannot rely on it from within my home. (I'm in the middle of a 5 miles radius dead spot, despite living next door to a major school complex in a city of about 30,000 people. Blame local pols for the anti-tower craze? Blame the telcoms for not developing better technology - we are fairly behind other countries in cell technology deployment? Whatever. Point is, my technogadget isn't working much better than it would have in 1980. We're talking about cell phones, here. This isn't exactly cutting edge technology here).

And at the risk of being targeted as a liberal-flamebaiter, these indicators have been in steep decline not only of late, but going back to those "heady, feel good days" of the Reagan era. Maybe it's the idea that religion nullifies the need for education, or that the method of retaining power employed by the neocons relies so heavily on misinformation. Ah, but I digress.

    Good post.

    Dear ARS,
I for one was intrigued by Google's reformatted logo. As a regular Google user, I have come to appreciate the periodic changes Google makes to commemorate events, dates, or occasions with their logo.
When Google emulated Joan Miro's artistic with their logo a few days, I was similarly intrigued. While I enjoy visual arts, I admit I am completely novice in art history. Sure, like the average layperson, I've heard of Dali. But I had never heard of Joan Miro prior to Google's recognition.
And I liked what I saw. I searched through a few of the links, viewed a few of the images posted thereon, and enjoyed what I saw.
Now, I see that Joan Miro's legacy is apparently in the hands of those who would do everything possible to limit the distribution of that style of artwork. I certainly understand the concept of copyrighting actual works. But the idea that you also have the right to stop people to even imitate? And in this case, it's not even as if Google was imitating with the intent to claim the style was of their own invention. Instead, they went out of their way to point those interested to information about the actual creator.
By your reasoning, it would be illegal to impersonate John Wayne, Dick Clark, Jerry Lee Lewis, or other notable and memorable performers whose style was an integral part of their allure. Surely, Jey Leno isn't breaking the law by saying "nice lady" in Lewis' Nutty Professor style while mocking France during a weekly opening monolgue on the Tonight Show. Instead, to all but the most idiotic, we are all reminded yet again how powerful and influential an artist the original Jerry Lee Lewis was.
It's a shame we cannot consult Joan Miro about whether or not this is "acceptable." I for one have no doubt it is "legal," and even "moral."
But as long as organizations like yours are the ones controling Joan Miro's legacy and the effect Miro's artwork has on the world, I can promise you I will avoid it. To do otherwise would be to forward an organization whose behavior I consider contrary to the wishes of the typical artist, as well as contrary to greater good the art world tries to offer soceity as a whole.
You have pushed many people away from Joan Miro's work. Congratulations. as this seems to have been your real motive.

I hope your vomiting session went well. Did everything come out ok?

No, I am certainly not saying that all of the negative results of our wonderful, technologically advanced culture are good. I personally do not espouse the ideal of "If you can do it, it's ok" so prominent in American political culture today.

Instead, I'm trying to point out the folly people seem to have, especially here in America but truly everywhere in the world. We've tried so hard to "tame" nature, to hold nature in its present state forever. It's thinking like that which leads to the "any change is bad" philosophy. In truth, many of the changes presently occuring in nature are bad for mankind, and also bad in the sense that it's not "narutral," when natural is defined as the way it was before mankind came along and changed the course of environmental history.

Maybe if we embraced the undeniable truth that we shape the world around us we'd be better off. It' not far off from what the article and environmental scientists have been saying all along, but I'm saying take it one step farther. We are part of the natural order, good or bad. We can either embrace that fact and stop trying to act shocked when we see that "nature is changing for this reason or for that reason," or we can all collectively commit suicide to stop those changes we cause in the ludicrous hope that what remains will be somehow "saved."

And while I hide my head in shame for the many things mankind has done, I also realize our impact on the environment can be belittled by even a small asteroid.
