I have to disagree strongly with some of your points:
Apple isn't only making PCs for home-users. It has a strong hold in the science-market.
And I don't think of Apple-Hardware as niche-hardware. I think, they are only one company, because none of their "consumer-electronics" makes sense without the proper hardware.
I had Dell. I tried to buy machines for a small network. But I came up to seven or eight different prices for the same configuration, everything depending on what type of shop (home, business, etc.) or what type of standard-configuration (ambassador, standard, etc.) I choose.
And not even the salesguy could help me. I don't think, I want to buy anything from them again... (I have another choice now -> Apple)
I think, you don't have any idea about the working conditions at Microsoft. In this way, Google has tried to recreate the success MS had with its employees.
For an engineer, MS is still one of the hottest places on earth.
You don't have deep hierarchies, it could happen (and happens very often) that you directly report to Mr. Gates.
You can discuss about their products, but not the working environment. The later is perfect.
I use a (now over three year old) Dell 8100 with a 15" display with 1600x1200. I think, it is exact the right resolution for this size of a display (I tried to buy anything similar for my desktop, but failed. Noone has anything near in stock)
I do very much programming on my notebook (especially when I am abroad) and you can never have enough space on your display *g*
I know all that. But you can't encode DTS-streams with such hardware, when you (for example) have multiple audio-streams and arranging them in a acoustical surround-environment.
And who wants Dolby Digital?? and even this is not well supported.
So, the only possibility is an analog 5.1 input on your soundsystem and an analog 5.1 output on your soundcard. And in that onboard-Sound sucks.
And another factor: I bought a SATA Hardware-Raid from Adaptec new from my Dealer for just EUR 49. So what the hack bother with some crappy onboard adapters?
My clients (and myself too) are working in a high-availability environment, so I can't just switch motherboards, because the RAID-Adapter is broken. (maybe there is no chance to get another motherboard, so all data is lost, and restoring costs time)
And so I don't need motherboard crammed full with lots off stuff noone is ever going to use... I want light motherboards with better performance (and lesser features) for an acceptable price.
I too have many of my servers with GB-NICs. but only PCI-X (Hooray on my Macs *g*).
Tell me how you want to use SPDIF on multi-channel-output. As far as I know, no Chipset can do realtime-encoding to DTS or Dolby-Digital.
You never did listen to the "output" of onboard-Sound, didn't you? I still like my PCI-Sound cards for the better sound (and yes, they cost almost as much as the mobo) but if you only use on better speakers, you will hear the difference.
and i saw no 16x SATA on these two boards you mentioned.
And what should I do with 2GB NICs connected via PCI-Bus??? This IS crap!
I can tell you the views of the "crows":
First: I has to be free
Second: I has not to be from Microsoft
Third: If you want to earn money with it you are equal to Microsoft, therefore bad and should be rot in hell
Fourth: There is only one thing, that is more bad than Microsoft: Apple (because they earn money)
I think, I summarized it up.
My personal opinion is that the GPL is just useless.
If you, my friend, didn't get it: this is the idea of OS. Not to be restricted to some few projects. And I always find something with stands for or against any new project, when I am devoting some time to it.
Yeah, then don't complain and install it yourself. Everyone, who buys a Mac and has some understanding of PCs installs it himself.
And this one is pretty offtopic.
Why this entry is marked as informative is way out of my mind...
In fact, did anyone, who tries to argue against a Dvorak-Keyboard ever used one?
I bet not (as always).
It is not so easy.
The contract, you are "signed", there is either a transfer of property (e.g. for bread) or the right to use (e.g. a leased car). There is always a transfer of ownership, but this ownership can be revoked (at terms you have to agree -> EULAs), if you are only buying the right to use.
The "receipt" can only add clauses to your "relationship" to the seller (e.g.: to which date you can return it, exchange it, to which terms does the seller exchange it) This is just a completely normal "general terms and conditions" (AGB in German) If the seller has clauses in that, that are not legally binding or immoral, the whole "general terms and conditions"-contract is invalid.
The same goes to EULAs. (and there are some jurisdiction proving my point).
And what is "fair use" to you? For example to WoW, in a virtual world created by a company, everything is "fair use", which the company names as "fair use". So you don't have to use WoW, if you don't agree. And as long there are no immoral clauses in an EULA, it is valid. And just for kicks: You are not owner of a property, you are "earning" in a virtual world. The property itself is never transfered into your property, so you don't have the right, to sell it. You only buy the right to use the servers of Blizzard to use a software installed on them.
With software, it is the same thing: You are transfering propertie from the vendor to you (the media and the manuals) and you are buying the right to use the software...
A buy is an implicit contract between the seller and the buyer. The receipt is only for tax. The contract is "signed" when you hand over cash/visa/you name it to the cashier.
In which parallel universe should that be???
HP is one of the greediest companies I've ever seen. So much to "buying HP products"
(I do not do it for a long time...)
And before that Fiat already has done that. And not in the high-end range of there cars but in the small ones.
(And it works quite good, except it doesn't understand "whaaaazup", I tried it...)
Because in the financial business there are harder tests to the software, they are using. The tests are expensiv. Why do you think many of the ATMs are running still on OS/2 (in Europe of course).
I was going through security reviews with the software of a former employer twice and I can tell you, this was neither easy nor funny.
And thats the same way with Operating-Systems. I don't see the relevance of your statement...

I hope, you are talking about Europe, aren't you? Because in the Holy Land, erh, United States they have also evolved, but back...
Did you ever try searching on Rational Clear Quest. I have to use it now, but I am wishing my good old Bugzilla back!
Why this isn't modded funny me don't understand.... You don't need not RPM for installing Bugzilla. It is just a bunch of scripts ;-)
