While we can laugh at Microsoft for trying to use the wrong tool for the job, its a great way to for them to test their own software.

Programming is always more efficient when the programmers use their own product. Isn't this why linux is where it is today?

Too bad no one at Microsoft tried living with the paper clip for two months before plaguing the world with it.

  5. Radion was NEVER a standard part of the G4 machine on Apple Punishes ATI For Leaking The Cube? · · Score: 1

Apple is NOT making the Radion card less avaliable!

Apple had planned to demo the Radion cards during the keynote speech and in other significant places. However, at no point was Apple going to make the Radion card a standard install. Apple is going to offer it as an OEM item that can be added to the G4 Powermacs (the big ones, not the cubes).

But the Radion cards aren't even avaliable yet! They will be avaliable in a the next couple of months. Apple is clearly going out of their way to make the Radions a part of the current upgrade of the G4's even if it means they can't include them initially - or can't afford to ship them standard.

Personally, I'm glad they are an OEM option. I wouldn't want to pay $200 for 3D features I never use - they are of little help for print and web design.

Was Apple shootign themselves in the foot? Yes and no. From a shipping product standpoint, no. There is no change in actual shipping products. From a hype standpoint? Perhaps - but it seems that Apple has had plenty of hype going into this expo. (How many G4 cube related stories made it on to slashdot?)

  6. No Dual PPC Cubes on Slashback: Recusement, Homecoming, Cubism · · Score: 5

The post mentions something about a dual processor G4 Cube. This simply isn't true. The G4 cubes come with either a 450 or 500mhz G4 chip. One lonely chip.

I'm not sure who this box is for. It costs about the same amount at the full G4 machines but its less upgradable. (It does have more mhz than its bigger version, but not necessarily more processing power.) I think its targetted for people who reguard looks over function. (You can't even set a stack of post it notes on top of it - you wouldn't be able to get at the dvd drive.) Perhaps its a repackaged iMac with a better processor.

I find it strange that you can upgrade the ethernet from 100Base-T to gigabit. There's an expansion slot - and a fast one, thats asking to take more than just ethernet upgrades.

As for the dual processors - thats one answer to Motorola's problems with getting the G4 up to speed. Too bad you'll need Mac OS X to really take advantage of it. And too bad they're doing this just to keep up, rather than get ahead.

  7. Disappointed on MacOSX and X11 · · Score: 1

I, for one, will be extremely disappointed if this becomes a sucessful product.

X has already been ported to MacOS X server, porting it to MacOS X should be trivial. Apple's current distribution of MacOS X includes compilers and other such unix basics. While they might not be part of the default installation, I'm sure plenty of people will be interested in adding them through an additional install.

In other words, compiling unix software under MacOS X should become a relatively simple thing. I want to be designing graphics in photoshop and flash while working on the back end in mysql and php. All on the same machine.

Will Apple put any effort into this? No, but they have given us the BSD layer and they fully intend for software developers to take advantage of this.

  11. Shooting Digitally? on Star Wars Episode 2 Starts Shooting · · Score: 1

Can anyone explain WHY they are shooting digitally? Are they shooting digital in addition to film??

There are some basic problems with digitial image capture. CCDs see light on a arithmatic scale. Twice as much light registers as twice the brightness. Film sees light on an exponential scale. Four times as much light registers as twice the brightness. This gives film a much higher dynamic range. Film also corresponds to the way our eyes see light. Film also looks better.

However, we have been socialized to beleive that CCD images look more "real" because news shows shoot video rather than film. In actually, its just a flatter image.

I'm all for getting rid of the hassles with film, but CCD's don't seem ready yet.

Can someone knowledgeable explain the issues behind getting a specific processor to work in tandem with itself? I've heard it said that AMD chips won't do this as well as Intel chips - is this just FUD? How different will a multiprocessor G4 be to the single processor version?

To get more than one processor to work on a machine, obviously some cooperation is required. Chips intended for SMP include much of this on chip, so little additional hardware is necessary. However, if the chips do not include this, it must somehow be performed off chip. (Off chip = more expensive.)

The "cooperation" required is based mainly around the fact that two processors editing the same value in memory could cause BIG PROBLEMS. Therefore, there needs to be a way to "lock" memory values so the second processor keeps its hands off while the first processor is writing. This locking mechanism isn't an issue when dealing with a small number of processors. (I beleive 20 is the upper limit.) As you increase the number of processors, the locking mechanism becomes more and more resource hungry. Getting past twenty processors is what makes a super computer truly super. :)
