  1. Color projector, not slides, negatives, or prints on Color Photography with B&W Film · · Score: 2

What is interesting about his approach is how CHEAP it was. Rather than trying to reproduce color images, he reproduced black and white plates that would be projected with colored light.

He avoided the problem of movement between exposures by using three lenses, each with a red, green or blue filter. I'd like to see how a closeup still life would come out. Each color would have a slightly different perspective on the situation, causing some strange distortion, This is known as parallax and can be an issue in rangefinder (non "through the lens") cameras - what you see through the rangefinder isn't quite what you capture through the film when close to an object.

Variance between the different projectors, light sources, and the varying qualities of color filters would, however, make it nearly impossible to get consistant results.

These images definitely have their own feel to them. Strangely, the website doesn't say anything about a real life exhibition of them. Perhaps they didn't make prints. seeing them in person, up close, would reveal more about how the results of the process.

Of course they are teaming up with The Borg. NYU is taking over Manhattan (specifically, the village and union square), Microsoft is taking over your desktop.

Or maybe i'm just jealous that I won't be making six figures after I graduate and paying back $40k in student loans. I'm an artist, I can starve.

Do you expect a university to have Linus Torvalds give a speech on economics to students who are paying nearly $35,000 to learn how to shake hands? No, these are students that attach WORD documents to emails, because "Microsoft is the standard." As far as they are concerned, the exchange of money is what makes the world go 'round. The number of people who might lock themselves out of their machine is greater than the number of people who are likely to be hacked by someone with physical access to the machine. I'm sure those who see single user mode as a threat will find a way to turn it off.

  8. Bush on Biodiesel? on Soybean Powered Harley · · Score: 5

When W Bush spouts about the impending energy crisis, I wish he'd fund programs that push alternative energy sources rather than building more refineries. After reading up on the www.biodiesel.org website, I'm quite convinced that we are not facing an energy crisis, but an inevitable energy industry shake up. (Which, for a former executive in the oil industry, is just as bad.)

If www.biodiesel.org is correct in its claims, then vegetable based energy sources solve MANY of our energy problems. They can be used in existing, unmodified diesel engines. It costs very little to make - a 1:3.24 energy production ratio. Its clean burning. Its safe.

The problems - not many people use diesel engines. But a significant amount of industrial equipment does. It would be a relatively easy conversion in the market place to produce more consumer diesel vehicles. It smells like McDonalds french fries. Annoying? Yes. Is regular exhaust particularly pleasant? No! Distribution - its hard to buy. But hasn't this been a problem with any other new type of fuel? We won't get past this until we're forced or someone invents a miracle fuel.

I'm not worried about the future supply of energy. If we run out of oil, we'll find something else. And I won't have pity for the oil industry either.

  9. Problems and Suggestions on Searching for Exceptional Multimedia Productions? · · Score: 3

Curating a multimedia show is difficult. It tends to "day" rather quickly. Even if the project is burned to a CD which can last for 30 years, the platform it is built on is unlikely to be around in five years. Because of this, all of NYU Interactive Telecommunication Program thesis' are recorded to VHS. Sure, you lose a hell of a lot putting a digital project on video, but its better than losing everything.

A lot of multimedia work falls through the cracks. It disinterests both engineers and traditional artists. It also tends to be installation work. This means that the museum piece is not wrapped up in a form useful in your PC.

    As for suggestions...
The Whitney Museum of American Art is featuring a show called BitStreams and Data Dynamics. This is one of the largest showings of multimedia art.
Blue Man Group is probably the only long running theatrical show heavily based around multimedia. Beyond the eye candy, it makes lots of commentary about the art world and the digital world. Oh yeah, they do those Intel commercials as well, but I always figure that they just confuse the average home viewer. : )
Explore NYU'S Interactive Telecommunication Program site. MIT's Media Lab and NYU's ITP are the two top programs in their field. The Media Lab does things because they can. NYU does projects on a much more human level.
Rhizome tends to be a center of net based art.

And there's no way you can pass up the old standard - Understanding Media by Marshall McLuhan. While it was written well before "multimedia" its commentary on more traditional media is easily extrapolated to digital media.

  10. Publishers vs. Writers on Supremes Hear Case of Publisher Piracy · · Score: 3

Publishers have a history of being rather unconcerned with compensating writers. This is most obvious on college campuses. When professors put together a course packet for students to buy at the local copy store, the copy store is legally obligated to pay the publisher of the works. (Some copy stores may simply ignore this, but it isn't uncommon for pubishers to threaten copy stores with lawsuits.) However, the publisher does necessarily own the work! Even if the copyright is held by the author, the writer will never see a dime.

One of my professors organised the photocopying of a large course packet so her students could avoid the $80 fee. Whenever she includes her own work, she must battle the copy stores to NOT send money to the publishers of her own work.

Who will win? Publishers have lots of lawyers. Authors have few.

  20. Digital vs. Film on Startup Claims 16.8M Pixel Camera Sensor · · Score: 3

As a photography major in college, I've been through this debate plenty of times.

    1. Digital CCD's do not have the dynamic range of film. You will lose shadow and highlight detail. This does not matter for most studio shooting, since you have precise control over the lighting. However, almost all outdoor shooting and uncontrolled shooting LOVES high dynamic range.

    2. Where do you think you're going to put all those ones and zeros? 16.8 million pixels in a single frame requires quite a bit of bandwidth in order to take a quick picture. You also need some place to store that picture. Going to store it on a little card? Not likely - at least not soon.

    3. How do the CCD's respond to light and color? Photographers learn the way different films respond to color. Will the CCD yield a good looking shot?

Everything else in the process is taken care of. You can get digital images printed as regular color prints. (This has caused a bit of confusion in the art world.)

This also creates a class of consumer who is old enough to buy the game, yet young enough to be persuaded to buy it for those not old enough. He's the momentary middleman. He (it is usually a he) tends to be one of the first kids in his class to have facial hair.

    http://www.maccentral.com/news/9909/24.g5.shtml
    http://www.mot.com/SPS/PowerPC/overview/newroadm ap.pdf

As you'll notice, NOWHERE does it say that Motorola is removing Altivec in future chips.

The lag in processor speed is due to several factors. First, the G4 chip is not very scalable mhz-wise due to its shallow pipeline. IBM seems to have overcome this, however legal agreements are preventing IBM from producing the chip without Motorola's blessing. Future PPC designs include deeper pipelines to make scaling to higher mhz easier.

At first, IBM was refusing to add altivec, wanting to focus on mhz instead with the ppc line. What has resulted is that IBM is simply more prepared to produce faster chips that Motorola right now.

In all, its really a shame that this fiasco has occured. The PPC has a much cleaner design than the x86 based chips. Its a marketing miracle that Apple hasn't been held back by this. (What looks faster? Bodini blue or beige? :) )
