These guys test out the board/cpu/ram for you. I haven't had any problems with mine which I have had for almost a month.

My only problem is noise. I got the ThermalTake Volcano II because it was listed as the lowest decibals.
But both those fans running are still horrendously loud.

  16. CIS == windows rebooter, CS == programmer on CS vs CIS · · Score: 1

CIS means you waste your life rebooting windows machines for people.
CS means you can be a good programmer.
Not saying CIS people can't learn how computers really work or how to program. It's just a lot less likely.
And those going after CS just for the money really annoy me. My cousin was just telling me the other day that his school counselor told him he should go into computers, not due to any particular ability, just because the money is good.
So I told him he should actually take a programming course and see if he enjoys it.

I think a lot of people miss the point that programmers are programmers primarily by nature, not nurture.
Our sci-fi-loving/math/problem-solving brains our just wired differently.

  21. Reacting to port scans on How To Secure A Cracked Box · · Score: 1

port sentry will permanently block any IP that scans us

From all the research I did on the topic, plus a good discussion on firewall-wizards, this isn't generally considered to be a good idea.
What if someone forges the scan packets to be coming from your machine's gateway? They can hose your server relatively easily.
Granted Mr. Rowland(portsentry author) says in practice this doesn't happen(noone has reported people DOS'ng them when using portsentry in this manner), but I think the best policy is to respond to scanning by blocking only on less secure test boxen and workstations.
For live production servers(especially a large portal website) responding to scans/attacks like that it is a DOS risk, albeit slight, and also could prevent some of your potential clients from accessing the site(attack through AOL proxy?). I just block everything except the minimal services my servers provide (e.g. ssh and apache) and concentrate on securing those apps. Then I can pretty much ignore portscans.
