This is not true anymore. The new MPLab X and new XC8, XC16 and XC32 compilers all support Linux officially. They are all free to use with some limitations. MPLab X is based off of NetBeans. I have installed, run and compiled real embedded applications with this tool set under linux for a currently shipping product.

I was on the last airplane out of Anchorage International Airport after the eruption of Mt. Redoubt in 1989. Just as we were about to board the volcano erupted, they said we had about 30 minutes to get on the plane and takeoff before the airport was closed. We just barely made it. An unfortunate KLM 747 flew right thru the ash cloud, lost all four engines and was not able to get them back til about 5k feet. We saw it when we got back, it looked like they had sandblasted it.

I also fondly remember watching the ash cloud head our way from the Mt Spur, and the shovelling the ash the next day off the driveway with snow shovels.

Do you not know what Fedora is? Fedora is a bleeding edge distro. One that is openly acknowledged by Red Hat as being their Beta testers for new technologies that might eventually make it into RHEL. So this is just a standard thing Fedora does.

It is almost impossible since the class of bacteriophages only attack prokaryotic cells and all multicelled organisms(aka everything that is not a bactieria) have eukaryotic cells. This is not going to happen anytime soon since the makeup of prokaryotic cell walls are very different then eukaryotic cells walls. So the chance of enough random mutations happening in the next 1000 years is not likely. As previous posters have said the point that is the most worrisome is the virii attacking your intestinal bactieria.

  9. Gumstix on Linux Distributions for Embedded Development? · · Score: 1

Check out the Gumstix.org Project. The project has a very nice distribution of sorts with lots of stuff for embedded processors. They have built a configuration utility for setting up your embedded system. Also it does not just support the gumstix hardware, they have support for most of your standard linux architectures. Just get the svn copy of the build root, this page has their svn access instructions. It is also fairly easy to figure out how it works and add extra packages. Just remember if you want to use C++ that is at beta level. Also check out the mailing list and the wiki.

If you use the rt2500 cvs driver it works great even on smp systems for Linux. I was using the rt2x00 becuase until late May the rt2500 driver would lockup SMP systems and Fedora only has SMP kernels for the x86_64 systems now. I don't use the rt2x00 driver anymore because it has some problems. However, I have not lookedinto it for about a month. Just go to http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Down loads and grap the latest rt2500 nightly tarball. Also if you don't want it to mess up the fglrx driver from livna you need to change the install directory in the makefile otherwise it will remove the directory the fglrx kernel mod is in. After that you can use all the standard tools to configure the wireless card. However it is the rt2x00 driver that appears to be destined for the kernel since it is built from the ground up to be used in SMP systems.
