This has been Apples problem all along as well. This is why windows kicked Apples ass sooo long ago and is still kicking its ass and will continue to kick its ass. The fact that windows will run on any x86 machine is why windows was successful and why macintosh crapped the bed. It's all about enabling your customers, if you can enable them to do more at a reasonable price then expect to be a millionaire. If you attempt to sell them something that disables them then forget about it. DRM? OSX forced to run only on apple hardware? The worst business ideas of all time.
I refuse to get coffee in places that charge for wifi. Free wifi is like free cable tv at a bar. Plain and simple: if I have to pay extra for the open internet at a coffee shop, I will leave and never EVER return. Cheap bastards.
Also, if you're concerned about authentication then its really easy require a free signup where a user will give there name and contact information in echange for having their laptops MAC address added to the allow list in the router. Easy. You can also turn WEP on give them the key for free. This is not so tough.
Actually there are laws against monopolistic buisness practices and so a person may indeed have the *right* to sue apple here. Apple is famous for their extremely proprietary and monopolistic practices, in fact they make microsoft look like an active member of the open source community in contrast. Its these extremely possessive and monopolistic tendencies that have driven Apple into the bottom of the market time and time again. Everytime they come up wiht something new that is lucrative they shoot themselves in the foot with their horrible buisness model. Someone else will make a portable HD / mp3 player that will run on an open standard and allow for greater cohesion amongst buisnesses and Apple will be blown away again. Its the same old story for Apple... when will they learn?!?!
