..I hate American TV and TV in general. You get a good story started that people love and then the channel cancels the show and the story is never finished(not saying this applies to Jericho, but in general).
I suppose that's why I mostly watch anime. The shows rarely get canceled in the middle of a story so you get to enjoy it to the end. Of course, it helps that the shows are planned so that the story gets told fully instead of being dragged out season after season(exception apply). I wish more shows were done like that. "Here's the plot and here's how it'll end. We'll need 12 episodes to tell the story and that's it."
"I'm thinking about moving to Finland where copyright seems to make more sense."
Don't bother. It's the same crap here as it is in every western country. This time the court just happened to make a reasonable decision. More often they fail to do that.
I've never understood why anyone would put up with paying for messages or calls they receive. It just makes absolutely no sense what so ever. It's like paying for every e-mail you receive(you think spam annoys you now, hah).
In any case, the Finnish operators have solved the issue by offering an bill balance plan. Meaning if your kids bill goes to over, say, 20 euros, he won't be able to make phone calls or send text messages anymore. And as others have mentioned, there are prepaids you can use too to curb your kids phone bill.
Ah, the joys of living in a socialist nation. Free attendance at universities etc. and no need to rack up tens of thousands in loans just to get a chance at decent jobs and the government pays *you* money for studying. If that's not enough to pay for your living you can get a government guaranteed loan.
The best thing is, you really don't get junk mail from credit card companies or anything like that. If you do, just stick a note on your mail box stating "No advertisements" and the postal office will stop delivering them to you(required by law I believe). Though if they name you as a recipient they'll deliver even ads, but it seems to be quite rare. I've had the "No ads" note up for 3 years and it's a bad month if I get even one advertisement in mail.
Really, I feel sorry for those of you who live in countries that use bandwidth caps etc.
In Finland there is, as far as I know, not a single ISP that limits consumers bandwidth usage. A few years ago Sonera(one of the largest ISP's in Finland) flashed the idea of implementing such caps, but the outrage and lost subscriptions pretty much made then backpedal and drop the whole idea.
It's interesting how every time there's a news story of EU slapping Microsoft for breaking EU laws, the slashdotters suddenly come out siding with Microsoft.
Never mind that they were bashing Microsoft just one news story below and complaining how monopolistic and evil Microsoft is:)
All the non-RIAA music I've come across has been significantly worse, at best.
Then you either have a very mainstream music taste(nothing wrong with that) or you haven't looked very hard. I must admit the offerings really vary greatly between genres, but for example, it's very easy to find great metal bands that have no affiliation with any RIAA members.
Now, if you're into pop music etc. then you're probably going to have trouble finding good ones that aren't in RIAAs pocket.
teenagers settling out of court? That reeks of RIAA/MPAA tactics to me.
No, it only shows that teenagers do all sorts of things online, including copyright infringement and phishing. Or are you saying that teenagers shouldn't be tried under the laws of the country?
if YouTube is the ticking time bomb of copyright infringement that it's claimed to be
I'd say it's pretty certain. Even YLE(the Finnish national broadcast company, about the same as BBC is in UK) is looking into Youtube and unauhorized use of its content. They haven't excluded the idea of suing Youtube through USA courts.
That doesn't mean they should prevent Linux users from trying to see the videos without changing how their browser identifies itself. They could have just put in a notice saying "Linux is unsupported. The videos might work or have some bugs or not work at all. We will not offer support to Linux users on this issue. Good luck." and let the user go and have a try if the videos work.
Well, far from being scientific or anything, but over the twenty years or so that I can remember, winter in Finland has been coming later and later. When I was small we'd get snow around mid-late November, while now it seems like we're lucky if we get snow by christmas eve. Autumn seems to drag on longer as does spring. So from my observations(which are far from scientific) it seems like all the seasons have moved a bit and some of them have gotten a bit longer while others have grown shorter.
In any case, there has been a noticable change in the weather over the past 20 years.
Funny how all the major Finnish ISP's seem to chug along just fine without any sort of traffic shaping or even monthly traffic limits on their ADSL-connections. Makes you think now don't it?
On the other hand, if all service providers band together, we might finally see the feasibility of micropayment, so that a penny is charged to your broadband bill every time you access Slashdot.
The early versions of Azureus were indeed nice. No problems and the resource consumptions was managable. Then came a new version(I forget which) and it became simply horrible. It ate up CPU time like crazy and the memory usage was just insane(you don't need 200+Mb of memory for a freaking torrent client). Haven't touched the client since. Instead I use a sensible program called utorrent, that barely uses CPU time or rarely uses over 10Mb of memory.
Piratebay alone has 828,911 registered users. Their stats give a total of 2,451,086 users (1,856,495 leechers + 594,591 seeds).
Newnova gives out the numbers 3,835,910 seeds & 6,091,984 leechers (9,927,894 peers).
So you can safely add at least a few million to the total number of p2p-users from Bittorrent and still be conservative about the estimate. You're not really going to be able to get any more accurate numbers about the total number of Bittorrent users.

How did these traffic caps get started?
Generalizing is the way of the world ;)

they don't know temperature it is

The helpful bot on an IRC channel tells it to me when I ask
movies made after video games aren't exactly destined to become classics.
Well, maybe classic flops.

'Anything that comes through (an IP network), we can record'
Not to worry. The RIAA will soon sue them for being able to record illegally downloaded songs. Problem solved.
It's a clever attempt by the Slashdot editors to take out the competition, Digg, with the Slashdot effect ;)

Where else do you think all that ozone layer has gone from Earth? It doesn't just magically disappear into thin air! ;)
Then again, in 2025, the quality of King Kong will look like crap(special effects wise).
Reminds me of the Lafkon video about trusted computing.

Torrent just in case it gets popular

Are you mad? I'd go broke in a day!
Or one could just like, you know, replace the broken switch instead of buying a whole new device.
