What am I doing up?!? Also, whenever an article is posted that is relatively obscure (by obscure, I mean "having an acronym longer than 3 letters"), the first posts are usually people who have an intelligent comment to say and who actually understand the content of the article. Once there are a sufficient number of those comments, everyone else can comment on their speling an grammer, or just make random "+5 Funny" posts. This helps an article develop an healthy balance of comments, however this process takes a somewhat longer time in the wee hours of the morning a relatively obscure article (as opposed to something about Star Wars). Now don't get me wrong, I like Star Wars, and I like the way Slashdot works, and sometimes I think the comments people are posted are more entertaining and enlightening than the actual article. "Well then," you're probably wondering, "why the hell is he writing this?" That's an excellent question. And the only answer is that I'm bored, and the only obvious alternative is sleep. That's even more boring.

... I recall reading that the reason they're calling it "Xbox 360" is because "Xbox 2" would sound less sophisticated than the Playstation 3. Since these two consoles will be duking it out for a while, M$ didn't want to give Sony any advantage. Well that's all well and good, but here's my question: What are they going to call the next iteration of Xbox? They'll always be faced with the dilemma of being one step behind the Playstation. Xbox 3 vs. PS4, you get the idea. How are the going to solve that problem? "Xbox 720," anyone?

  22. I don't think so... on The World's Most Devious Alarm Clock · · Score: 1

The award for most annoying alarm clock has to go to a story my grandfather once told me: Seems that when he was a student at LSU, some acquaintances of his had somehow gotten ahold of a horn that goes on a train engine. He assured me that he had nothing to do with it. You know the kind of horn I'm talking about, the kind that trains blare at ungodly hours of the morning and can be heard for miles. Anyway, these devious students hid the horn in the top of one of the dorms and rigged it up to a timer. So early that morning, at around 2 or 3 o'clock as I recall, all was calm and peaceful until the horn went off. It shattered the early morning calm for about 20 seconds, and then shut off. From what my grandfather told me, it was simply SO LOUD that the sound seemed to come from everywhere at once. After about a half-hour, everyone had more or less recovered and were settling back into their beds for the rest of the night. However, the horn had been set to go off once every hour after the first time. So once again, everyone was rudely awakened by this earsplitting blast! This cycle repeated itself several times before anyone figured out what was happening.

  24. Seems to be a pattern on Yahoo Adds Search for Creative Commons Content · · Score: 3, Interesting

Mozilla (Firefox) is to Microsoft (IE)as Google is Yahoo.
By pattern I mean waiting for the competition to come up with useful features, then copy them. Take IE7's anticipated new features for example. We've seen them done already, and done right, in Firefox. Just yesterday, Slashdot had an article up about how Yahoo's upping their email space to 1 GB, to compete with Gmail. But Gmail will still be better. POP3 access, and ads that are barely noticeable, excellent user interface... the list goes on and on.

My point is that Yahoo needs to make some innovations of its own, rather than duplicating what's already been done. Come back and talk when you've done so.
