  1. twin star on Help Solve the Mystery of the Pioneer Anomaly · · Score: 1

Perhaps the gravitational effects could be explained by the existence of an orbiting brown dwarf as hypothesized by the Binary Research Institute. It would be interesting to see if the strength of the gravitational pull fits the parameters of the companion star deduced from the meteor shower periodicity and the angular momentum and lunar cycle.

The graphics are superb, you can even do different tilesets. FreeCIV is the best of all the CIV clones imo. It would be nice to have keyboard only input.

The article means 5.7 teraflops peak performance for a customer. Perhaps they are throttling the cpu per customer to 5.7 max? You know; 5.7 should be enough for everybody!

Minister Brinkhorst clarified what he said during the time the microphone was turned off:

Dutch minister of economic affairs, Brinkhorst was caught lying here. He had the official assignment of parliament to support the Danish to make the subject a B-item, but he didn't! (he supports the patent directive).
There also were odd problems with the sound: "Someone doesn't want me to speak and switches me off!"

my thoughts too, perhaps IBM should make such an open source jpeg coding tool themselves... would be immensly popular in no time as one would create significantly smaller jpegs.

  9. open patents on Breakthrough In JPEG Compression · · Score: 3, Informative

The JPEG standard specifies 2 entropy coding methods; Huffman coding and arithmic coding. As arithmic coding is patented it is not in use. The patents for this arithmic coding called Q-coding http://www.research.ibm.com/journal/rd/426/mitchel l.html are in hands of IBM. Perhaps they will allow OSS to use this patent along with the 500 other patents recently allowed? http://www.ibm.com/ibm/licensing/patents/pledgedpa tents.pdf The particular variant of arithmetic coding specified by the JPEG standard is called Q-coding. This variant has the advantage of not requiring any multiplications in the inner loop. Q-coding was invented a few years ago at IBM, and IBM has obtained patents on the algorithm. Thus, in order to use the JPEG arithmetic coding process, you must obtain a license from IBM. It appears that AT&T and Mitsubishi may also hold relevant patents.
