    I was going to say "How do they know there was no contamination?", but TFA states that equal amounts of right handed and left handed organic molecules were found, ruling out contamination as a source of the amino acids.

    I'm gonna make a wild assumption and assume they have hot-swappable redundant DC power supplies, in which case reliability goes up, not down. As far as the energy savings not covering the conversion costs, you're probably right, but this is an experiment to gather data.

    Yes. DC/DC converters have gotten a lot more efficient. When Edison and Tesla were arguing, a transformer was the only way of doing voltage conversion.

    I see... so if the game had a "capture the flag" mode where you fought your way into your opponent's base, grabbed a black man in chains, and then slapped him around for being "uppity", you would consider that "just a joke" too? Today's joke is tomorrow's accepted behavior.

    The marginal cost for each book is close to zero. The fixed costs are not, and must be amortized over each book sold. Theoretically, if Amazon could count on selling more books by restricting loaning of books, it could lower the price charged to customers for each book.

    No, what they are probably saying is that the amount of money they would have to pay lawyers to defend their current business model in court would far exceed any profits they could make by continuing to use that business model... a situation which does really suck!

    The point he was making is that hospitals charge at least twice their actual costs for any procedure in order to cover the half of their patients who have no insurance and no means to pay. Insurance companies have some leverage to drive these costs down, but cash customers really get screwed.

    Violence is violence, but treating female characters as chattel, e.g. a prize to be won, is also offensive.

    As far as domestic violence is concerned, 30% of it is woman on man violence, and women are twice as likely to use a weapon. Violence isn't something that men do to women and children, it is something that people do to people.

    Only if the net output of the solar cells over their projected lifetime exceeds the energy costs to manufacture them and affix them to the side of the building. This is a publicity stunt, when in fact revamping the environmental controls could potentially yield greater energy savings at lower cost. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be -- a good engineer looks for the most efficient means of accomplishing the objective. Slapping solar cells on the roof of a Prius technically makes it go farther on a gallon of gas, but the difference is so trivial that it doesn't justify the cost of the solar cells.

    The problem is that it is not a level playing field. The US has stricter environmental and safety regulations than places like China, and it is harder to bribe officials to look the other way. Since lowering our standards to equal those of the most backwards nation is clearly non-viable, the only solution I can see is to prohibit import into the country of any product not made in accordance to the environmental and safety regulations of the country. Yes, with globalization some leveling of wages is inevitable. But let's not pretend we currently have a "level playing field."
