Yeah, I pretty much agree. It seemed a lot more like someone hoping to increase his chances of getting a grant than it did providing an workable for dealing with the current situation.
It may be worth some further research but I can't shake the feeling that it's not anything that someone else with a background in chemistry hasn't already thought of.
Don't worry, tomorrow I'll be playing the role of McBeth so all my posts will be in Elizabethan.
We will proceed no further in this business:
He hath honour'd me of late; and I have bought
Golden opinions from all sorts of people,
Which would be worn now in their newest gloss,
Not cast aside so soon.
Doing it on a massive scale in the Gulf of Mexico is something else entirely.
While this might prove useful in future spills, it would seem to me to be very unlikely that it could be brought up to scale fast enough to help with the current problem
So far as I can tell, it just means that now the BIOS is going to consist of a complicated, semi-unintelligible set of menus (and/or icons) and point and click options rather than a complicated, semi-unintelligible set of text-based menus with non-descriptive names.
No problem with it here either. It did take a fairly long time to load completely, although there may have been a bit of the Slashdot effect involved in that.
Seems like kind of a waste of a front facing camera if it only works on WiFi
Well, it would be nice to have it work over the 3G network but Jobs said that the carriers (note plural there) needed some work. In any case, free Wi-Fi is pretty widely available at many places in the U.S. such as airports and cafes so it's not like it's completely useless.
even if they get it working on the 3G network, since it uses an iphone app (FaceTime), it will probably be an iphone only thing. Why not use the already implemented standard instead of a 1/4 working solution?
Is there an already implemented standard for mobile video phones? Does it work as easily as it appears to on the new iPhone? In any case, Jobs also mentioned that Apple intends to release FaceTime as an open standard so anyone can use it on their phones.
In other words, it doesn't count until Apple does it.
Incorrect interpretation. No matter who does it, it doesn't count until it's done right. And these days, when it comes to doing it right, Apple has been on a roll.
only we wish that we could hook up a keyboard or mouse
You can connect an iPod to a keyboard--either Apple's own unit or any standard Bluetooth keyboard will work. No joy on a mouse, though. The touch interface doesn't support one.
There are only so many things you can do with a tablet form factor.
That is true to a certain extent but there is still room for innovation or, at least, variation. The iPad is a slick bit of industrial design, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't come up with a different design that would work as well or maybe even better. When you look at the photos of these hopeful competitors, however, it's pretty obvious that they're all pretty much iPad clones.
There must be something sexy about the iPad hardware since all the tablet computers shown on the page linked to in the summary look pretty much identical to one.
Deal. Best time to come in during the winter. The weather is great and all the people from Arizona who come here to escape the summer heat have gone home.
You know, fifteen years ago I would have been embarrassed to offer someone from the Netherlands an American beer. Not any more. There are some outstanding beers brewed here now and my town, San Diego, hosts a number of very good craft breweries. Seriously, if you ever find yourself here, I will buy you a beer.

Apple Announces iPhone 4

Considering the current hate between Adobe and Apple, I'm a bit surprised myself.
Stevie J. may be pissed off at Adobe right now (they'll probably make nice eventually) but PDF is the native display format used by OS X* so he probably doesn't have a problem with it on the iPhone.
*I'm not sure if that carries over to the iPhone OS--uh, I mean, iOS--or not. Anyone out there who can fill me in on that?
I'm guessing $199 w/ 2yr contract. That seems to be the going rate these days for the upper tier smartphones. They don't cut you any slack for how long you've had your current phone.
Yep, that's right--$199 for an 8GB 4G, $299 for the 32GB 4G $99 and for an 8GB 3GS. With 2-year contract, of course.
I don't think this means the claims by Jobs are *false*. At worst they're are very slightly misleading.
And that, my friends, settles that. The Bad Astronomer said it, that's good enough for me.
Seriously, thanks for injecting a little rationality into the thread.

Oh, c'mon--you don't know a joke when you see one?
In any case, when compared to the rest of modern PC hardware, BIOS is clunky and archaic and I will not miss it. EFI is a much better way to go.
So far as I can tell, it just means that now the BIOS is going to consist of a complicated, semi-unintelligible set of menus (and/or icons) and point and click options rather than a complicated, semi-unintelligible set of text-based menus with non-descriptive names.
FTFY
Interesting, thanks, although I wonder if Apple is really working on it or if it's just legacy stuff they haven't removed.
No problem with it here either. It did take a fairly long time to load completely, although there may have been a bit of the Slashdot effect involved in that.
You missed my point entirely, and apparently willfully, in order to complain about things you don't like about the iPad.
Yes. iPhone OS uses the Quartz 2D graphics system which uses the PDF "imaging model."
Okay, thanks. I kind of figured that it did but I didn't want to say so without confirmation from someone who actually knew what he was talking about.

A surpise awaiting in few of the most dynamically growing markets
Very interesting. Wonder if they'll use another name for it in Asian markets.
Okay, thanks for info.

Their mistake was preparing for the burning bush, from the oil spill, instead of the flood.
They should have known better, having already passed off their burning Bush to the rest of the United States back in 2000.
Sounds good to me.

Hey, you're welcome. I'll buy you a beer next time you're in town.
*sniff* I don't matter
There, there, don't feel so bad. I don't matter either--and I'm the one who posted the comment in the first place.
$199 for 16GB* 4G
Right. My bad--was typing too fast.
