    Could you be a little more specific. In what areas are they showing signs of incompetence. A multinational company I recently worked for had twelve techies for the entire London Office of three hundred. That would put your company at 12,500 for a company with 500 techies.

    Yet again you perform the subject shuffle. There are none, they are not the right age, they don't have such feeture etc ...
    Have you ever heard of the scientific principle that you cannot prove the non-existence of something?

    Show me the Linux equivalent of any of their products and you've convinced me.
    For someone who invokes the scientific method you do seem to lack basic skills in logic. I asked for samples of software functionality - not commercial titles. You responded by asking *me* to provide samples of the opposite. Illogical Captain :)

    In other words, please feel free to do my homework for me. I don't *have* to prove there is educational software for Linux. You have to provide proof that there is *none*. I usually see this kind of tactic on Usenet, but carry on why don't you.

    For the average user KDE is indistinguishable from Windows. I've sat people down in front of this KDE desktop and they don't notice. Personally I prefer a desktop uncluttered with feetures which is why I use XFCE.

    Under Windows, Acrobat Reader refused to install until I installed some service pack. Installing version X of something breaks version Y of something else. Have you never ever come across the term DLL hell.

    Personally I find YaST to be perfectly straight forward in installing as it automatically installs the requisite packages. Where a 'click.here.to.install' package isn't available the RPM installer handles it equally well even if you have to type $rpm -ivh filename.rpm to install or rpm -Uvh filename.rpm to upgrade.

    Where I have attempted to compile from source and run into difficulties, I emailed the developers and what's more got a reply. The problem being that I didn't RTFM

    Nonsense, for the average user they can Browse, Email, Edit documents and burn CDs without the danger of wiping out their C:\Windows folder into the bargan.

    Have you actually tried to do real work under the default desktop in XP. To do a search you have to click start->search, disable the talking dog, select from: 'search for pictures', 'search for files', disable the talking dog, 'on this computer', 'on the lan', 'the C: drive', 'the D: drive', 'the internet', subselection, search by date, disable the talking dog, browse folders, select folders to browse etc .... (disable the talking dog)

    Under bash type .. $locate file.

    The Mplayer I am using requires no command line usage. Whice version are you refering to?

    These are the same 'security experts' that were upto recently predicting that no one was writing malware for the Mac precisly bqcause of its low userbase.

    This would also be news to the Apple developers. Does this 'security experts' have any citations for this statement. Also OS X is based on bsdUnix which by default works on the least privilege model they are currently innovating into Vista.

    For a company that warns off others against using Open Source because of litigation concerns they do seem to spend an inordinant amount of time in court defending itself against accusations of violating/stealing other peoples IP.

    Most people have little to fear as you're not big enough to go after. Unlike Apple, Amazon or Blackberry for instance. Good times ahead for the lawyers I guess. The root cause of the current IP racket is the US Patent Office and its predilection to grant nonsensical patents. We need less IP law not more.     Just using the conference to confuse, confound and inject a little fud ..

    One way of meeting the challenge is to hire on the best out of Open Source taking them out of the Gene pool.

    Open Source does not equal Open Standards.

    But MS Open Standards does not actually mean the protocols and interfaces are in the public domain does it. A royalty free license is still tied to Microsoft. But keep on repeating the word 'open'.

    You are quite correct, Google didn't invent any of the above and what is more to the point doesn't claim to have but do deserve some credit for Gmail and the rest.

    According to this blog entry MS invented Ajax in 1998: "All of the pieces of AJAX .. have been available in Internet Explorer for some time, and Outlook Web Access .. since 1998"
