Flat is not the word you are looking for. The word you seek is "soulless". There is nothing behind the characters, no life, no personality. Even with the puppets in the first trilogy there was someone behind the mask, behind the strings. That gave them life. And made the characters more believeable.
And with the scenes in the original that were updated, the same thing applies. they feel more real because they were. There were spaceships, however small, that were filmed. They actually existed. You can't get the same feel from CGI, yet, as you can from something that exists in the real world, no matter what the scale.
Guns are sometimes used to commit crimes, yet we do not outlaw them. Bongs are being sold at the local Waterbeds N Stuff. Knives that aren't practical for neither hunting or home protection can be purchased in lots of places. Why should software be any different?
because the crimes committed with guns and knives don't result in the percieved loss of product by major lobbying groups of congress. the can only end in the loss of a human life. and we know how much that is worth.

Look at what Wilco did with yankee hotel foxtrot. warner said they will not release it. wilco relased it on the net on thier own. sold out a 30 city tour just from the internet presence. then a warner imprint bought the album back for three times what it was originaly to be sold for.
That would be so awesome! Not only could i play UT2004 and Diablo on my TV, i could play Photoshop and Final Cut!

anyone read all of Gulliver's Travels? one of the lands he visited, i can't recall the name, but the population was immortal, only after around 100 years, their brains were essentially dead. the elderly were burdens on society because they could not die.
What would immortality do to the planet? What happens when we reache the carring capacity of nature? Would johnathan swift's A Modest Proposal then be up for use? Serve the children as food...

guns, ammo, cars, and baseball bats have all been mentioned, but what about alcohol and tobacco? how many criminals smoke and drink? how many alcohol related deaths are there per year?
