    Take a look at Kerio (www.kerio.com); the personal firewall is free and if you turn off the bells and whistles (popup blocking, MD5 checking, IDS) it has a fairly low overhead.
    But I understand you on the 'roll your own' idea. I figure even if it's not done right, at least you have direct access to the developer. ;)

    Just tell your mail application that it can't talk to anyone but your mail server (you are running a personal firewall, right?). Then you can just open the mail and not worry about it talking to the internet. Anyone foolish enough to open an attachment from an unknown source promising porn should be running as a non-admin user (personally I don't think anyone should be a local admin while doing work) so these kinds of worms can't install themselves.

    Never actually done it, huh. Their samba support sucks ass. Plus try to integrate their login to the network so you can use some file security. Even bigger pain in the ass. Each new flavor of X gets a bit better, but I figure that's because they're 'borrowing' the code for the linux samba updates.

    Granted, the bigger question is why is there a guest account at all, since you're not supposed to ever enable it.

    Office will open all versions of older files and if you have to send a file to an older version of the software, just pick that on the save as line and away you go.
    If you don't like FUD, stop spreading it around.

    Unfortunately, as the internet has 'changed' 99% of the on-line users are there for the eye candy or the porn. Turn off images, or stay away from site with annoying ads. Vote with your feet, but you've already lost.
    I personally like my cheap ass hardware, flat panels, and all the other tech that is only available because so many fucking idiots are in the market. Hell if people could use the software with what to me appears to be obvious controls, I'd be in a whole new line of work. ;)

    When the movie opened with the yellow-white fractal, then went to matrix, then turned 90 degress and matrixed out again, I was like *ah-ha* it is a layered matrix. But alas, it was not, but it was still a good flick and finished up the trilogy very well.
    Fan-boys and fairy tale ending types are pissed, but I'm gald they went with the more complicated ending that you have to think thru.

    Yes, but the game can't legally be used on a PS2 without Sony's approval, they're more of a gatekeeper to their hardware. The same absolutely can not be said for music files on the iPod.

    Excpet in this case Apple doesn't own any of the "software". All they are is a middleman, so as long as they aren't losing money with the iTunes store they're winning.

    Oooh. Put in CD, wait, wait, agree to license, wait, wait, choose where to put the install (kinda hard step to skip, pressing enter will work, but you have options), wait, wait, auto-reboot, wait, wait, enter your name, wait, enter admin password, wait, enter install key, wait, configure network (or press next for DHCP), wait, join domain or press next, wait, wait, auto-reboot, login. It cannot get easier than that without making assumptions (see answer.txt).

    They already have one. It sucks. It's sucked since I first saw it in IIS 2. It's been completely rewritten at least three times and it still doesn't work. The results are crap and MS knows it. Hell you can't even search the MS database with their own product. If you run the same search internally vs. google you actually find usefull articles with the google search.
    They went after the best and google told them to shove it. Now they're looking to see what else they can swoop up.

    Yea, but the grandparent wanted to map to the same port twice, for that you need to map two IPs to the box. I don't think any of the home grade NAT boxes will bind more than one IP.
    Anyway, NAT is great stuff. Put your servers in the DMZ and put all your users behind a NAT. Save IPs and prevent them from hosting 'accidentally'.

    Other than FPS and RTS (god forbid they put a Turn Based Strategy game on a console) what is there? Sports games and twitch games (although you might argue that FPS are just a subset of twitch).

    Not exactly. If you have a professional grade NAT device you can bind multiple real IPs to the router and then forward internally based on port and IP. So if you have x.x.x.1 and x.x.x.2 bound to your NAT, you can point x.x.x.1:80 to 192.168.0.1 and x.x.x.2:80 to 192.168.0.2. Just like with a firewall and real IPs.

    I have yet to play a decent RTS on a console. I'm still waiting for the day when the PC games and Console games can compete head to head and all the kids with mice whip the shit out of the guys with joypads.
