    Let's see.
First, Word is a shitty word processor.
vi is a word processor. Word tries to be a page layout, grammer corrector and 27 dozen other things which causes it to take way too long to do anything. I'll take vi on Linux or BBEdit on MacOS over Word any day.
NT is stable enough for desktop usage, but that's not what it's for. No sane "average" home user could use it. Plus there are very few games or other "home user" programs for it since M$ can't even have compatibility within their own product line.

I neither own nor run ANY M$ Bloatware. I have several computers running MacOS, Linux, and BSD.
I have neither the need nor the desire to run any of M$'s OS's, but if I did I would certainly Not feel any need to pay for them.
M$ has consistently stolen every good idea they have implemented. Since the companies who created these ideas won't see any of my money, noone will.
Also, they have a monopoly. If I somehow needed to run any of their software, it would be because their illegal practices have created a situation where I am forced against my will to use it. Since they are so eager to make everyone have to run their software exclusively, they can damn well pay for it.
Fortunately I haven't run into such a situation. If someone sends me a document in their proprietary format I tell them to resend it in an open format.

Of course I feel a moral obligation to prevent someone from paying anything to M$, so if they felt they needed anything I do knoew where to refer them to get it free ;-)

No one, and I mean No one at all ever has used IDE for serious video editing. You can put 500 TerraBytes worth of IDE drives in a machine and it is still a toy for video editing.

That is why most macs ever released have had SCSI.

    Also there is NO capture.
That is what firewire is. Digital Video. It goes from the tape in the camera to ram (or hard drive) no Analog to Digital conversion necessary.

  12. Japan is the epitome of "welfare state" on Sony founder Akio Morita dead at age 78 · · Score: 0

Set your wayback machine to World War II. The fact that the Chinese didn't have a big lobby in Congress is the only thing that kept all the leaders of Japan from being hung for crimes against humanity.
Check the facts. The Japanese' war crimes made the Germans look like kindergarden bullies. They enslaved tortured and murdered not only the Manchurian Chinese, but Americans as well.
We thought that we could use them as a trading partner, so we (America)let these atrocities slide. Then America rebuilt their country. Sounds like a handout to me. Of course we have also spent ourselves into an astronomical debt to keep the "evil commies" at bay and allowed Japan to continue to exist by becoming their Army.
Of course all this ended up poorly for the US because we forgot the lesson of Pearl Harbor:
The Japanese culture has no sense of honor, integrity, or fair play.
As further evidence of this look at their continued slaughter of whales, rhinos, and elephants. All because they are terrified of their dicks not working.
Note also that they are the single most racist culture on the planet. It is interesting to note that to the Japanese, the Koreans are "Niggers", yet if you look at the history of Japan, it was founded by Koreans who lost the war. They retreated to those islands and inbred for hundreds of years. That is where the Japanese came from.
So I think welfare state is not only fitting, but perhaps understated.

Since the open source movement is a gift culture what if we were to volunteer our help on major migrations like this?

I see several HUGE reasons to do this.
    1. The savings on the cost of the migration to an open source platform might help convince them to go ahead with this
    2. The more that major corporations decide to go over to the light side the more benefits to the open source movement.

      1. More positive press
      2. More applications etc.

    3. The goodwill generated by a move like this could help erase any negative perceptions people have about "open source freaks"
    4. It looks Great on a resume.

I think this could really work. Not only for this project, but if this gets off the ground we will develop many tools to aid similar migrations. If we as a community can make migrations easier, then one more obstacle will be removed.
I have some good skills in PERL and C, and would be willing to volunteer some time. The only compensation I would request is that the tools we develop for the project would be open.

If you are interested in attempting this or would like to arrange something for other similar projects let me know
