I have to buy a new notebook _now_ so that is the problem. so the choice is limited to: intel centrino duo, turion and macbook pro. my decision is to buy a turion-based notebook now (not very expensive, msi s270 costs ~1200$) and possibly buy another one when dual-core turion appears and linux succesfully runs on it.

I know macosx is claimed a heaven for programmers. linux is not since the diversity of libs. my needs however are very specific and limited (eclipse + java + php + apache + postgresql + some-other-software). I need 64bit. I need a notebook with weight 2kg. gentoo on amd64 is blazingly fast. that is all ;-)

but look at gmail: it did not change the way many people read mail. none of my friends changed her/his primary email to google. neither did gtalk. let us be honest: although google services are good, they are not revolutionary. and they do not have to - they are ALL TO INCREASE ADS INCOME in the end.

I have tried to create a few pages and the only conclusion is: the interface and features are very very poor compared to any wiki engine you can find at several wiki farms (mostly these wikimedia-based). google allows you to customize look&feel a bit and that is in +. but for me - usability is below average - I am a great wiki fan.

googlepages is beta (surprised?) and I hope interface will evolve. imho this is not the way I would like to create my pages.

we are currently working on a similar system based on wiki engine. and I can tell you - number of options is just not comparable. but I wonder if we will have eg. feed reader/integrator, flickr integration, blog integration etc. with googlepages.

I suppose eventually you will be allowed to put adsense on googlepages. ;-)

summarising: googlapages seem to be good for simple, personal pages. but I can not image creating more than dozen of pages with it.

From my point of view (web application developer, Ozone framework author and the author of a few rich-content websites I can say for sure: I am more than happy to discover PostgreSQL. Why? More Oracle-like, transactions, nested transactions, views, sql-schema... I doubt MySQL 5.0 will come even close to the standard of PosgtreSQL.
Some can say MySQL is fast. No, it is not. When you run more than 100 users at once PostgreSQL is faster. MySQL has stupid table-locking mechanism that decreases performance significantly under high load.
I would say: PostgreSQL seems to be slower, is not perfectly optimized, but much better goals in its design were used. And one of the goals ic SQL conformance. MySQL is FAR from the SQL standard.
If you want to migrate from MySQL to e.g. Oracle - it is a pain. But PG is much closer to it.
IMHO PostgreSQL is an industry-standard database and we use it for almost every project now. We have used MySQL some time ago and believe me - the difference is huuuuuge. PG is a real database. MySQL seems like a table-managing-application ;-)

  18. What is the point in HYPE-GUI on Longhorn Beta is Disappointing · · Score: 2, Insightful

I do not really see a point in pseudo-improving the visuals in Longhorn. Being almost addicted to Linux where the system core and graphicsal environments are totaly separated - new widgets or whistles in Windows do not impress me at all. In Linux I can freely choose between Gnome, KDE and several others and a lot of custom themes for each. So an extra toolbar in Longhorn or an extra bar with "Administrator" written on it - what kind of joke is this?

IMHO it is a VERY unreasonable to bind visuals to the system core. If gui goes down - the whole system does. Integration gives you (naively thinking) positive values, but what you can see in Linux or MacOsX is the counterexample.

Ok - so Microsoft is promoting the new os with a few whistles added, perhaps drm integrated and will require you to buy a 3GHz processor to preserve the same quality and conveniance you had on a 166MHz running Windows 98.

IMHO _IF_ MacOsX would be available for x86 along with all the drivers and software Windows has now - Windows would go down.

I am also affraid the guys from Microsoft are permanently making some ideological/design mistake when developing next Windows edition. Look at Apple: they decided to go Unix and... MacOsX is one of the most stable and secure systems available. Microsoft keeps upgrading DOS 6.22 and patching security holes. The result is just... funny and sad. Funny when you just look at their attempt to fool people and force them to buy their shitty products and sad because... they succeed. And people WILL but Longhorn.
