If I were a doctor on call, I would not be in the theater. I'd be at home doing something else. I would certainly never be so irresponsible as to let someone's life depend on unreliable cell phone technology.

I live in a small city, and there are dozens of groups playing D&D around here.

No, the real problem is convenience. Playing online in your own home is a lot easier than gathering a bunch of people somewhere. You can playing online for half an hour if you like, but if you want to play D&D, the minimum is probably around 2 hours, but usually 4. I used to play D&D every week with some friends, but these days there's no way I could find a 4-hour block of time to devote to it.

The fact that gamers are buying older and used games only signifies that they don't want the new stuff that's being produced.

I don't think buying used games is indication that you don't want the new stuff. I think the only thing it means is:

    • You don't necessarily want the new stuff right away.
    • You realize that used games are practically indistinguishable from new ones (w.r.t. the condition of the DVD, packaging, etc)

I can't remember the last time I paid the regular retail price for a game, and I've had my Xbox for three years. In fact, just this morning I purchase Syberia for $8 shipped. That game came out in 2003, but if it were made today, it wouldn't look any different!

I definitely do want companies to make new games. For the games I do buy, I probably would pay full price if I had to. But since all I need to do is wait 3-6 months, I can buy any game used for at least 25% less, usually much more.

However, the real reason why Netflix is so popular is the selection. They have almost every DVD available, orders of magnitude more than any brick-and-mortar store. I no longer have to worry about whether the movie I want to watch is available.

For instance, I prefer to watch TV shows on DVD. I can configure my Netflix queue to send each TV show DVD after another. So I watch the first disc, and then when I'm done (about 1-2 weeks later) I sent it back and get the next one two days later. The typical blockbuster only carries a few TV shows, and in many cases they're missing individual discs from the set!
