I contest this is a very handy tool for anyone that wants to setup multi-media, web browsing, plugins and more.
I setup most of my system without it and when I finally found it I was trying to setup Java plugin for firefox.... needless to say I kicked myself a few times, realizing that I could have saved myself days of configuring.
"Media Hype" + "Virus Name Variance" = "Consumer Dilemma"
The names of viruses should be treated like tropical storms & hurricanes. With the new year the naming should start over at the letter A, then when the English alphabet is exhausted the names should be Greek... and so on. It makes sense to prevent confusion over the many vendors and their different naming conventions. Of course all of this would have been prevented if M$ decided to create an API that did not require so many privileges.

I just want to know.... WHO APPROVED THE SBC - AT&T MERGER IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Why can NASA transfer 128k from here to Pluto and we all argue about using the pipes currently in place?

and whats the problem with forcing the user to login to a website again after the disconnect from the internet and get a new IP?
Seems to me that if the user wanted to stay logged in and if the site has the functionality to remember user names/passwords by saving the information in the browser then they could easily login again...
Personally I say - validate IP's, user agent, login name, session ID and time of day ( I kill idle users )
I've also been throwing around a more secure authentication scheme: FIFO Based Authentication
Secure pages that normally require logins still require a login, however, when a user accesses a page that they normally do not access or if they access a particular aspect of the web based app that they normally do not access - then they get a login page or capthcha depending on the content!
I also thought about validating: source tcp port, OS, and reverse DNS.
I'd like to see that TCO comparison. Think about it, 10,000 servers.
I think M$ has plenty of information to create a true analysis. That would paint a great before & after picture for all of those people that want to migrate from Linux to Windows.
I can see the headlines now: Migrate to windows, increase your server footprint by 1000% and your IT force by tenfolds!
Anyone that knows anything knows that Hotmail does not have any bragging rights.
Try Ubuntu - it just works. If you are familiar with linux you will need to do some tweaking to certain things and some things need to be configured in a certain order.
The problem: the order and the list of things to install or configure is not listed anywhere.
BTW, BSD is dying, vi is better than emacs, open off....
you forgot one.....
Linux, the OS you never have to reboot! unless you have a driver problem, or you reconfigure your kernel, or you have a hardware problem with CPU, disk or memory...
ok, you don't have to reboot if you change your IP!
MySQL better start rebuilding bridges soon or they are gone. This is the biggest load of crap I've seen yet.
Burn me once - shame on you, burn me twice - shame on me. I wonder why it takes so many people getting burned to realize that some companies just do not play fair AND YOU SHOULD NOT GET IN BED WITH THEM!
I mean seriously, SCO... couldn't you guy's (MySQL) find someone more worthy of the partnership? This sounds like something M$ would do.
The words "Good" and "UN" used in the same sentence.... You must not realize what the issue is here.
The US built something, everyone is using it, everyone wants it and the UN thinks they have a valid reason to have it.
Note: Not once has anyone offered to compensate the US for its contributions.
Furthermore, thanks for the feedback I now see that the ITU has absolutely nothing to do with the Internet. Telcom yes, radio waves yes, however, not Internet... Yet. I notice that they are trying to get into that sector. Just because they have a few links on their website that relates to Internet subjects does not classify this as an Internet governing body. (see http://www.w3.org/ ) Many organizations have recommendations about safe use of the internet, very few are actually making any real improvements.
Nothing to see here!
In other news: lighting strikes the equator and splits the world in two.
The interent is not broke and it does not need to be fixed.
Hand it over to some organisation that knows nothing about it and it will break (as in oil for food broke), or get broken into (as in Kremelin broke). I like it just the way it is thank you.
If you (UN) really want to piss off the US - keep asking for it! Otherwise - a word of advise... do one thing, do it good, make it better and do it again. Fix world hunger or something, and stop trying to take over the world.
That has to be the funniest post I have read on slashdot.
developers, developers, developers, developers....
So far 19200 people sign up for info on the results.... hrm... and growing. Prepare for spam.
you'll never know what I was thinking.....

~ 40,000,000 lines of code in windows compare to the ~ 5,000,000 lines of BSD code.
How did they (the Unix folk) manage?
Do not install: P2PFreeMovies.exe and BritaneySperesNaked!!!.exe
and everything will be perfectly fine.
heh! Does a Bear sh!t in the woods?
"Stay out of my way. Or you'll pay. Listen to what I say..."
"Yeah, why don't I go eat some hay.I can make things out of clay or lay by the bay. I just may. Whaddya say?"
I think its about time the RIAA looses something... this is a load of crap!
One of these days musicians will be looked at like poets, then they won't get laid or paid! Maybe after that the RIAA would copyright fart sounds.

Just because the banner say's version #, does not mean that has to be the version they are running.
