  1. OOo 1.0.1 has Quickstart anyway on Deploying Open Office? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just installed OOo 1.0.1 on windows having being impressed with it on Linux, and it has a Quickstart feauter - so this should help with startup times...

  2. Not all labels include labels! on Post-it Notes vs. Copy-Inhibited CDs · · Score: 1

On line retailers should make you click through a warning screen before going to your cart...

Also, I've heard it said that some (smaller) labels in Europe have been distributing copy protected CDs since Christmas, with no warning labels (e.g. Osmose productions).

I do have a stereo at home, but not at work...

...and all the music I buy is only every played at work (or occasionally in my car) - my girlfriend doesn't like my prediliction for Swedish death metal...(fancy that!), but I won't code to anything else :-)

  4. Lucas should have known better... on Attack of the Clones Cut in UK · · Score: 1

...if he wanted the film to have the same form worldwide. The British censors (right or wrong) are at least 100% consistent on this one point:

The british cuts of The Matrix, Die Hard, etc... ALL have the head butts removed, and they aren't even 12 rated!!

The US censors sex and swearing, the UK censors violence...maybe its no surpirse our school children don't go around shooting each other to get attention

  5. I do this too + questions for other domain owners on Text-Mining Your E-mail · · Score: 1
This may also be a reverse DNS resolution problem. Check that your IP resolves to your hostname and that your hostname resolves to your IP. If not, some sendmail installations will reject your mail. Also, make sure your sendmail is sending out the correct hostname - eg, you can set up your machine so that it thinks its hostname is something.domain.com instead of some-long-crap-dsl-023-094.domain.com where something.domain.com is not an actual DNS record. This works fine for everything except when sendmail starts sending out emails claiming something.domain.com as originator.

Aha, is this why it works at work (where my hostname is correct and resolvable), but not at home with my ISP, where my hostname remains the same but could not be looked up?

I just dial of over a modem, and its possible I configured that kind of perculiarly, because of wanting to switch between the LAN at work and my dialup at home.

Just to follow up on my own experience here...

I fixed my probs with new Mozilla installers picking up XPIs installed for old versions which are not compatible...

For Windows slaves, uninstall Mozilla using the control panel, AND then go to Program Files/Mozilla.org and delete the whole Mozilla subdirectory.

HOWEVER, you may want to be more selective with what's left. Probably you'll want to delete everything except Mozilla/Plugins.

  7. For once I agree - leave the add-on's till 1.0 on Mozilla.org Releases Mozilla 1.0 Release Candidate · · Score: 1

Normally I like to experiment, but I just upgraded from 0.9.9 (with mozdev spellchecker working OK) to RC1, and somehow its still picking up the spellchecker (how, anyone?!) and locks up the machine EVERY time I try to send email!!

So I've rolled back to 0.9.9 again, and although it recognizes the spellcheker, I still can't send email.

    F**k that!

To be honest, leave the alpha add-on's until 1.0 and frozen API's - because in the meantime how are you supposed to know what is RC1's fault, or something to do with whatever random XPI you are running.

If you want to help log bugs for projects - great!
But right now we need to know what's wrong with the Moz RCs, and there's no easy way to tell that if you have X alpha extensions plugged in!

Until there is a stable 1.0 of Moz with frozen APIs then debugging these alpha projects is a hopeless task, which I should think is why most of the projects at MozDev are stale at best!

The best way to help MozDev projects is to ensure that Moz 1.0 is as bug free as possible - they they can have something stable to build against!

I can see both sides of this too, and like many others I'm a programmer who *NEEDS* access to the web . Reasons:

    (1) I'm relatively new to the area, and without MapQuest I'd spend fucking days getting lost in the grand concrete carpark which is Silicon Valley, when I pop out on my lunch break to run some urgent errand - lesson, some web sites make you more productive to your employers, and to yourself

    (2) Instance access to Google and Newsgroups etc. is vital to me not becoming blocked while developing in Java. I have a reputation for getting things done yesterday, which doesn't come from signing requisition orders for delivery of new versions of Java/Apache software (and how the hell would I *know* that new versions existed without the web!).

    (3) My general access to IT websites is educational: JavaWorld, IBM Developer Workds, etc. etc. Helps me keep my knowledge abreast of current events, which is what my employers want!

    (4) Believe it or not I have reason to forward 1 or 2 relevent websites which were linked off slashdot stories to my manager every week!

    (5) Many people have also commented that it is an important escape valve. I'd agree, since I'm shut up in a office expected to work magic, when I hit a roadblock, I need to escape and browse for a while until my subconcious offers up a solution.

    My 2c.

Lastly, speaking in general. If you cut off employees access to email, won't you just have them contacting their friends by company phone instead. I'd think that communication via email is normally more succinct, less urge to chat, so if you get people off email and onto the phone, your going to lose more productivity over all.

And as for limiting access to phones - give it a rest - what about my mobile! I might actually get around to using all the millions of free minutes I waste per month!
