I've always seen gun ownership as a civic responsibility. I'm not the romantic type who thinks I can stand up to the army, but I would like to think that if enough responsible, gun owning citizens were to stand up to a tyrannical government that there would be some sort of political solution. Ok, maybe I am romantic, or just delusional:-)
I hope not, since given the US Military, it's not like moving to another country would get you out of the influence of a Hitler-like President, were he to come to power...that said, I've been trying to figure out what country would be good if McCain is elected come Nov.
You can take this as a reason to give up on politics, or as a signal that it's time to get more involved in the process and help to put more good people like Webb and Feingold in office.
Heh, I grew up with guns but never bothered to buy one for my own home after I grew up and moved out. Until 9/11. No, it wasn't the terrorists I was worried about, it was the reactionary government who used the attack as an excuse to grab more power.
I'm registered Democrat, and voted Democrat in the last two presidential elections.
I think the term would be "war of defense". You know, the President can suspend laws in the case of invasion or uprising within, not when he wants to kick Saddam's ass because 'he tried to kill my daddy'.
Perhaps you are right that a success in Iraq will vindicate Bush in the view of history. However, I can't imagine that anyone who has read about the decisions of Bush and his advisors with regards to Iraq would think that success had anything to do with the leadership of the current administration.
Reading books like State of Denial, The Politics of Truth or Fiasco would disabuse most people of the notion...
I'd like to believe that if the investigation was done and the truth about Bush's real crimes came to light that even Republicans would support removing Bush from office. The conservatives that were the base of the Republican party before the NeoCons took over _should_ support enforcing the rule of law and hopefully reclaim their party as the fiscal conservatives and those unwilling to export our military power for no reason.
Certainly, people should be able to make their own decisions, but they shouldn't be free to externalize the costs to the rest of society in order to do so.
Before I sold my PowerMac G3 (desktop) on Craigslist, I spent a couple of days stuffing all the floppies I had into it, making disk images... Now that classic is gone, I'm not sure any of them are runnable, much less useful, but the amount they take up is less than a couple of songs in AppleLossless.
That's one thing the NetFlix box is missing. Actually, the NetFlix box might have the ability, but the PC software certainly hasn't been announced. But there's nothing to stop the hardware from talking to a local 'queue' running on some PC or Mac in the house, serving up whatever video formats the hardware can play. It might involve transcoding your library, either on the fly or in advance, but it seems like that would be a strong selling point to be able to stream your 'legal' home videos or whatever in addition to accessing the Netflix queue.
I had an AppleTV (from Costco for ease of return), and it didn't pass the wife test due to the DVD player, the Tivo, the Receiver, the VHS, etc. That and the fact that Apple crippled the hardware so it wouldn't do composite out without hacking (I'll buy a new TV when my old one dies, thanks), it wasn't worth the hassle at this point. I'd love a software update for our Direct-Tivo (since that's where we get the majority of our content, I don't want to get rid of that box) that would let me stream content from a server in the house, and get NetFlix content as well. I just don't see that happening... Unfortunately, I think the only solution will be a general purpose PC and 'stealing content'.
Is a linux box with an ftp server, (Brother MFC), so of course it could be guilty of copyright infringement. Or rather, it could be the source of copyright materials that I assume I or my wife would be responsible for the infringement related there-to. Or something like that.
As for the more mass than the mass of the air, I suppose that would work, but you'd still have the (I expect, without doing calculations) _large_ energy release as soon as the antimatter leaves the 'muzzle'. As for laser or plain-matter projectile, I doubt that would remove the matter from the path. The laser might, given enough power turn the air into plasma, but that would likely still 'react' with the anti-matter. The plain matter projectile might be interesting, but not to push the air out of the way, just make it a containment vessel for the antimatter that releases the anti-matter on target.
Oh sure, free, clean energy is great and all, but then we have to start thinking about moving the planet further from the Sun, just like the Puppeteers!
I understand that. I also oppose all religions, Islam in particular.
But I still believe that islamists can "call for" the abolishment of everything not of Islam. They can even take every legal action to bring it about the 'end of america'. I certainly hope that they are not successful, but to throw away what makes our country great, our freedoms in the face of threats, would be doing their work for them.
Finally, someplace where this quote is appropriate: "Sir, why do you hate America?"
See, The point of freedom of speech isn't for the stuff you like. It's for the stuff you hate, that makes you want to puke or hurt someone. That's the kind of speech that the first amendment is designed to protect.
So, please, go and read the Constitution and realize that the government isn't there to change your wetnaps and wipe your nose, it's there to protect you against real violence. Speech isn't violence and shouldn't be treated as such.
My board (VIA EPIA EN-15000G) already has a jumper you have to set to flash the bios. You can make bios configuration changes, but not flash the bios. Not sure how the division is accomplished (perhaps the bios config is in battery backed static ram), but it seems to work. I don't know that I would completely reject a board without that feature, but it certainly would be a strike against it.
Statements like this: "Indeed the longest header file (WRK's winerror.h) at 27,000 lines lumps together error messages from 30 different areas; most of which are not related to the Windows kernel." Allow me to feel smug in my anti-Windows bias:-)
Interesting, what if I put a print of a photograph that I purchased from famous artist in my front window and people photographed it.
Would I be guilty of infringement?
My property is the one emitting the photons, the photographer is 'just' the one collecting them. In the case of a fileserver (p2p or otherwise), the other party has to request the packets...
Who's more guilty, me with the print of the photograph that I don't own reproduction rights to, or the person with their fileshare exposed to the internet?

The machines can't be trusted. Period.
Advise everyone to vote on a paper ballot. If they can't, they should impeach their registrar of voters.

No armor would be needed, the air between you and the enemy would stop it, and cause a large energy release just outside the 'muzzle' of the weapon.
FAX signatures were accepted by the courts, but I can't believe it was before people understood how to falsify them.
Well, I'd start with the Torah, Bible & Koran, and then go from there.

Of course they are allowed to protest american values. That a very american value. I think I should make up a big sign that says:
Please Take away Freedom of Speech so I can't Protest my Freedom of Speech!
Sort of like those "Behead those who claim Islam is Violent!" signs...

Not sure how much work it would be to analyse yet another system, but I'd love to see how NetBSD fares in this comparison...

So, it's in my front room, and visible from the street, but not 'publicly displayed' (I guess we could argue about that in court...). Then what?
