There is currently very rapid technological development in internet access, with multiple competing technologies, both mobile and stationary. (I'm on 24/mbit DSL right now, was on 512kbit not that long ago...)
For the government to plow huge sums into one one-size-fits all system of broadband provision would smother technological innovation in the field. If the goal is to increase broadband access, just give a tax deduction for broadband, or subsidize network construction across the board.

As for the issue at hand, computer game nerds have such a low baseline level of violence that any increase in aggression, etc. would most likely occur below the criminal threshold.
Any actual increase in criminality among nerdy white boys would be hugely drowned out by the crime machines among American youth: Black and Hispanic youth.
I use 5 buttons on my Logitech MX510 for the Mac. (I have exposé functions + dashboard on 3 of em by default) What brand are you having trouble with? (Nice to know so I can stay clear in the future...)
Even more importantly, the *producers* are all focused on next-gen stuff right now. My guess is all those next-gen development costs (that aren't generating one iota of profit at the moment...) are really eating in to profit margins.
Yea - replaced my PC with a Mac Mini a while back, and the sound difference is huge. (The mini is nearly totally quiet, except for when you put som pressure on it)
As long as you aren't into gaming, the Mac is a pretty good solution to the whole "quiet computer" thing.
