Yeah. I have taken an old PII 300, popped in 384 Megs of ram I had sitting around... changed all windows settings to "performance" and it runs better than my Girlfriend's Athlon xp 1800 with 512 DDR.
Granted.. a lot of that might have to do with the fact that I know how to keep my system free of kazaa/spyware... but still! That's 1/3rd the power, and runs just as good.
Have you actually TRIED HL2 on a GeForce 2?
I had my GF2 running it while my 9600xt was on the fritz. Although I was missing out on some of the visual effects, I found that the game ran VERY smoothe. Possibly even BETTER than my radeon due to the fact that since it wasn't capable of showing the high quality, it opted for MUCH easier to process textures
This is going nowhere, so this will be my last reply, regardless of what you say. Wasted too much time already.
"You fucking Liar. Heh. You went straight into argue mode."
Hrmmm... I guess you are right. I should learn to reply with such calm & rational responses as you've just demonstrated.
That's it, I'm done. I'll just re-state my main point rather than dragging in more stuff to argue about.....
The bottom line is, They are packing a lot of punch into this system for a good price, and if that's not what you are looking for.... nobody is forcing you to buy it.
I agree. They are treading new ground, and were bound to have problems. As soon as I heard about it, I was both excited & skeptical at the same time. I hope things develope well for this browser. Having the Netscape name with security of firefox, and compatibility with IE is a hard thing to pull off. But if it works, it COULD once again be the powerhouse of a browser that it was 10 years ago. (though I doubt it... I wish them well)
"Before you hit reply, re-read what I said and LISTEN. I don't care if you agree with me or not, but for fuck's sake, LISTEN."
Read once. Re-Read. Re-Read again.....
Ok then.
"$399 is out of my price range. I want less power for cheaper."
Sounds to me like you want this to be a regular xbox & not an xbox 360. So buy a damn xbox!! I don't know about you, but I see no point in having to pay $199 for a new system that is exactly the same as what we already have. I'd say THAT is more of a waste than shelling out $399 for something that actually advances the technology.
The bottom line is, They are packing a lot of punch into this system for a good price, and if that's not what you are looking for.... nobody is forcing you to buy it.
OK, I dont know where you got that quote from. I never said that nor do I remember anyone else saying that.
But anyways, you are missing the whole point. The hardware in these machines actually cost that much money to make. They can't just make it cost less. They already sell it at a loss. What more do you want them to do? It really drives me nuts when people complain to game companies saying "we want this" & "we want that" and when they GET IT, they then say ".... we also dont want to pay anything for it.... oh, and add this too". Seriously.... Gamers (in general) are the whiniest(sp?) people I've ever seen.
Before you start going "oh, just another xbox fanboy".... I'm not. I don't even own an xbox. PC Gaming is far better. But I still see the value in this system. I probably wont go out & buy one the first day they are out (mostly because I can't see myself playing a console enough to make it worth-while). But if I WAS going to play it enough, $399 (for a system with $700 worth of hardware) would not drive me away.
Not talking about graphics here. What don't you understand about "entire system"?
$399 gets you better graphics AS WELLL AS... faster framerates, more intelligent AI, Better Physics, more realistic everything. I understand that it also has to be fun, but the less physical limits the game-makers have, the more likely they will make something that IS fun.
If nobody cared about video quality or performance, we'd still be playing games like pong.
These aren't 8 bit systems here buddy. How the heck do you expect them to build an entire system for less than the price of a decent PC Video Card? If you bought a gaming PC for the same budget, you might be able to chug away with something like Battlefield 1942 instead of powering through brand new games.
I'd say $399 is a steal!! If you don't like it, go play NES.
Sony may be keeping their heads above water in the PS2 vs. Xbox battle, but I think the x360 vs. PS3 will be a losing battle for sony. There are just too many benifits that MS has over them.
1. xbox's will be much cheaper (at least cost/performance wise)
2. x360 is coming out first
3. I've heard that MS plans to release Halo3 AND Drop the price of x360's on the same day PS3 is released. (Talk about kicking them while their down!)
I think Sony might be strong enough to JUST get by on the shoulders of the die-hard fans. But I think it very well might be their last game system. Next generation will be all microsoft.
I think if you overclocked a 1.8 to a 2.8, you'd be running into HUGE problems, Not HUGE performance (assuming you managed to get it to run in the first place).
I understand the point to over-clocking, but unless you are a pure benchmark-freak, there is no point to go out of control like this. 5 more FPS doesn't mean much when you have to re-start every 10 minutes.
.... should also add.
Who uses a PC JUST for gaming? If you just want eggs, order eggs. Don't order eggs with a side of steak & mashed potatoes & lobster & hot dogs & caeser salad &...
Overpriced Titles? Perhaps on games with monthly fees, but compare any brand new FPS or Strategy game with stuff on consoles. They're generally $40-$50 instead of $60-$70 (canadian currency).
As for the hardware behind it. You just gotta be smart about what you buy & when. You say the 9800 you saw last weekend cost as much as when you bought it a year ago? Don't you think that's a good indicator of the quality of the card. You hit the sweet spot in the market. Why aren't you happy about that? Buying one now may not be the best idea, nor would going out & buying this $999 behemoth. In 6 months though, you'll probably find another gem to last you ages at a good price.
Could you explain why, exactly.. running on something other than 3306 is needed?
The only port I have open is 80. If someone were to gain access to my MySQL server, they'd have to some-how get a server-side script running off my webserver, would they not? I have my root user only accessible through localhost, and 3306 is closed... so I'm sure that I'm ok.

I Think the better way to put it is that you'd like that SHE get her fill of YOU.
So whats the point of pointing such things out?
.... whether it has any substance or not.
Because writing an article with such a controversial topic is sure to get lots of recognition.
Long Live 3DFX!! =)
Screenshots of Doom 3 running on a Voodoo 2
As long as they have the hardware they say they do, and the online gaming works... I don't care what else they promise or don't promise.
But it's very true. You should never judge a book(game) by it's cover(demo video). Been stung by that one too many times already.
