  1. I'm being sued by the RIAA on RIAA Now Filing Suits Against Consumers Who Rip CDs · · Score: 1

I just got a letter from the RIAA that they are suing me for not buying music from their labels. They say, and I quote: "Our research shows that the average consumer will purchase only 7.8% of their music from independant labels, yet you are purchasing 94% from them. For this reason, we have filed suit against you to recover the lost sales due to you not being an average consumer."

So if a student writes an essay about there being no God, and the teacher is heavy into his/her religion and is disturbed by the essay, then according to the law, the teacher can have the student arrested for disorderly conduct?

  10. Linux CAN cause the keyboard to fail ... on HP Dishonors Warranty If You Load Linux · · Score: 1

Linux CAN cause the keyboard to fail and this is how: Vista users, as we are all aware, use the keyboard a lot less, especially during copying, deleting, and moving files as Vista has a long built-in-delay to cause the user to wait and use the keyboard less. This decreased keyboard activity causes the keyboard to last longer using Vista than those users of Linux. Because of this long Vista delay, manufacturers can use poorer quality keyboards on Vista-installed laptops, knowing that the keyboard will get less use.

IANAL, but the way I see it, and consult your lawyer about this, you were still employed with your old company when they escorted you out the door one week before you planned to leave. Did they pay you for that last week? If not, they terminated your employment, not you. Because of this, you have a right to gainful employment anywhere, including the competition. Because you say you didn't sign a non-compete agreement, this "non-payment" of your proposed final week can only help you in court. The company I worked for 6 years ago was upgrading some software on all of their computers. They emailed everyone asking them for their username and password so that the technician could log in to their computer at night and perform the upgrade. I refused to hand over my password and told them that I would be there at the time they wanted to perform the upgrade. They weren't very happy about it. When they came to upgrade, I logged in for them. And watched everything they did. I watched as they connected to the server and install the upgrade. After they finished, they rebooted and left. I connected to the server again using my account and noticed that on the server was a list of everyone in the company, their usernames and passwords. Including the President and CEO of the company, CTO, CFO, all the way down the food chain. I walked over to the IT staff, showed them what I found and told them "THAT is why I won't give out my password."

  25. Phantasm IV Oblivion on MGM's DVD Class Action Settlement · · Score: 1

"MGM has denied and continues to deny that any portion of the packaging on the outside or inside of its widescreen DVDs is misleading."

Look at the insert included with Phantasm IV Oblivion. It states "PHANTASM: OBLIVION is offered in the widescreen format, enabling you to experience the picture exactly as it was originally shown in theatres. Depending on how the film was shot, the widescreen format presents up to 50% more image to the left and right of the screen than the standard "pan & scan" process, thus preserving the director's vision of each scene." The diagram to the left of this shows that the widescreen version has added content to the left and right sides as opposed to cutting content from the top and bottom.

Since this movie came with both the widescreen and standard versions, it was easy to compare scenes and this movie clearly shows no added content to the sides, but missing content from the top and bottom.

So now the big question is this: Was this movie filmed in standard format and then shown in theatres with the top and bottom cut off? That is the only way that MGM can be truthful in their assertion that they did nothing wrong.

(I originally posted this, but forgot to login, so it was listed as Anonymous Coward. LOL)
