  1. Problems with TurnItIn type services on Colleges Stepping Up Anti-Cheating Technology · · Score: 1

    1. A student writes a paper and submits it. These TurnItIn type services compare it to other papers and returns a score to determine if it was a copy of someone else's work. This student's own work now becomes part of that database to help the service make more money. Students need to copywrite their work before handing it in and demand that any service verifying that it is original remove it from their database. 2. A student writes a paper, it gets tested by one of these services and is found to be original and gets a decent grade. Later in a different class, another paper is required and it just so happens that this previous paper fits in precisely with the requirements, so the student uses it again. Remember, it is the student's own work. The service now says that he copied it word for word from another student and the student is accused of cheating. Now with scenario #2, reuse of a student's own work may be questionable, but it IS HIS OWN WORK and he should be free to use it however and whenever he wishes.

  3. No New Groklaw Accounts = Anonymous Cowards on Groklaw Will Be Archived At Library of Congress · · Score: 2, Informative

Reguarding the Anonymous Cowards comment, PJ had disabled new accounts so it is currently impossible for anyone to create one. All new users have no choice BUT to be anonymous. Some also prefer NOT to be anonymous, but their accounts were disabled/deleted because they posted a serious comment that was against popular opinion and labeled a troll. That isn't to say there aren't a lot of trolls there, because there are.

  4. 21+ Bing links on MSN home page on Bing Gaining Market Share Faster · · Score: 1

When I looked at the homepage of MSN (which many IE browsers use as the default home page), I found a minimum of 21 links that you thought were links to articles but were only links to Bing searches. This is why they are gaining ground, not because of a better search engine but because of the sneaky way they get people to use their search engine.

  5. Running multiple products on Malware Threat Reports Are "Apples and Oranges" · · Score: 2, Funny

Not only do the various security companies use different names for the threats they identify; they don't even identify the same threats.

This is why I have to run 6 different scanners: because there isn't one that detects all the threats. I currently run 2 antivirus programs along with SpyBot, SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.

  6. He pretended to be 17 on Canada Supreme Court Broadens Internet "Luring" Offense · · Score: 1

I think a lot of people are missing a very important piece of the puzzle: The guy pretended to be 17. I think this may be a big factor in their decision to prosecute this guy. It wasn't just a case of an adult chatting with a child. It was a case of a guy pretending to be a child himself and talking to another child. Of course he couldn't pretend to be much younger than 17 as I'm sure his voice was too deep, but he could still at this point pretend to be a "big brother" to the victim.

This is more like being charged a fee to buy last year's model car because you don't like this year's version. Not silly at all. Why should I pay a fee to get an older model that suits me just fine? Next thing you know Microsoft will drop support for XP and then charge them extra when they want to refresh their XP install. If you don't pay, we won't unlock XP and make it "legal". Note: Microsoft is not authorized to read this post or use my ideas without paying me $1,000,000 in cash.

  13. Federally Financed and School Resources on Are My Ideas Being Stolen? If So, What Then? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think the key statement in the previous article that you mentioned was the following: "Colleges and universities once obtained fewer than 250 patents a year, but that was before the Bayh-Dole Act gave them ownership of inventions developed through federally financed research." FEDERALLY FINANCED RESEARCH. If you are a part of any federally financed research, then yes, your invention belongs to the college/university. The other key statement was "Whether or not students are aware of it, the NYTimes reports that most universities own inventions created by students that were developed using a 'significant' amount of schools resources." Are you using school resources to create/discover this invention? Just because you are going to school there, doesn't mean that anything you create while there belongs to them. Sitting in your dorm creating the design for cold fusion using your own PC would not allow them to take it from you. Of course, the usual IANAL applies to this post.

  14. Artist compensation? on Warner Music Pulls Videos Off YouTube · · Score: 1

It would be interesting to hear from the songwriters and artists how much they actually get from these deals. I suspect that the percentage of each dollar that the artist receives by the Warner Music Group for their songs in a deal like this is very low. Why not cut out the fat and give the artists a larger chunk of the proceeds?

"We have no capability of targeting any school at all," said the RIAA representative, who argued that there is a large "misperception" among university administrators that individual colleges are being picked on. "Technically we can't do it. We find what we find with this process, and that's what we send to schools." Technically we can't do it? BULL***T!
