I don't know the history of open relays, but I do know that I worked for a hosting company that tried unsucessfuly for almost a year to secure the mail server(s). When we finaly did get it set up, it was a support nightmare. People didn't read the emails that we sent explaining the new system and were freaked out when it was trying to authenticate them when they were sending. An important side note is that these were all nt4 boxes.....I suppose that was most of the hassle, but still, all it takes to buy a server and some bandwidth is a credit card. It takes a little more than that to set it up properly. All goes back to human error being 99 percent of the problem I suppose.

  6. First hand experience on How Much Does it Cost to Produce a Recording? · · Score: 4, Informative

I have a band, Metric Nut metricnut.com, and we have a cd about to come out on February 25th on Times Ten Records. The cds total cost to record for us was about $10k. This is a pro peice of work. The studio that we use is a moderately high end place that charges in the 500 a day range and since we aren't selling a million records we only pressed a couple thousand at about 90 cents each. We have gotten a little college play around the US, and some good reviews, so you can figure that the recording is decent enough, although look at the white stripes...that is a garage recording.

Anyway, for refernce, Nirvana's big hit record cost about 50k in the end to record, they probably paid somewhere in the 10-20 cent range for each unit, but they spent 100 million on promotion. its pretty easy to see why they charge 15 dollars each.

In the end it realy depends on your level in the pyramid, and your budget. I have heard awesome records that i know cost half of what our did, so It can be done relativly easily, you just have to have your head on the right way on the right day.

Maybe the idea is to make it so that everyone's experience is tailored to them. XP and 2k take steps toward this by dynamically adjusting things like the start menu. Seems to me that the more things that your OS/GUI remembers about your habits, the easier it will be to establish interaction. You may not be able to start off with a great experience out of the box, but after 2 months or so, you and your computer would be in sync. Kind of like an rpg's level system, except without the Trolls......errrr.

They send out the deceptive letters, and out confused/uneducated customers just sent off a check to them. The worst part, is that they totaly screw up the name server entries, and the sites go down. Fortunately, they (Interland) are responsive to our complaint calls, and will at least modify the dns so that it works again.

I'm not quite sure where all the bad reviews of this movie are coming from. I planned to see this movie last Saturday, but before hand, I looked up a few reviews. They were about 80% negative, so I decided to not go see it. The next day, a friend of mine pressured me into seeing it anyway, and it was awesome. The atmosphere was exactly like the games...sure there is some filler/fluff, and most of the characters die 20 minuets into the movie, but again, that is just like the game. If you haven't seen it, for sure don't post opinions, and at least give it a chance. To put this movie in the ranks of Street Fighter, or Super Mario Bros. is just silly.

This is the kind of info that providers of services, be it cell phone, broadband, or cable television, would like to keep on the down low. They are hoping that what you don't know, you won't bitch about. Think about it before you blast someone again. Besides, there are much more geeky topics than this. Save the bait for those. :)

Since the big boom that was the famicom 20 years ago, the japanese have paraded half naked girls in front of thier video game booths at shows like these. But now its different isnt it?? You watch a few Barbara Walters specials on the terrible terrible industry, easily forgeting that the only reason they market games the way they do is because that is what you, Mr. Imtoogoodfortitties, wants. If you think otherwise, reply. But seeing as how you won't do so untill after that episode of Murphy Brown you have on tape ends, I'll entertain myself with a game of Quake 3 Arena.....or is that too violent?

Ok, now this is my first ever post here(after about a year of reading), and i know that this is gonna be marked as flame bait..but here goes anyway. I am a musician, and i personaly would love to have my songs indexed on napster, its free publishing, and would benifit me greatly. However, and i know all of you realize, most ppl that use napster arent interested in finding indy artists, or their favorite local bands newest song done on thier home 4 track. they use it to get the newest pop single. and that, is stealing. you can justify it any way you want, but when it comes down to it you all know that it is. an artist ususualy sees about 12 cents off of every record sold, more after they pay back the lable. and you all have to know someone, if not yourself, who has not bought an album because they download the singls/whole album off of napster, or irc or wherever. i guess my point is, that i see the general attitude in here to be something allong the lines of a witch hunt...and i just wonder how many of you have thought about what you are actualy fighting for?? is it the the right of free speach, or is it the right to not have to take your self down to tower records and buy a cd?
