Newegg.com has great deals on OEM versions of this drive, and they ship Federal Express Saver which is cheap and fast. I highyl recommend this drive along with Taiyo Yuden media from rima.com. I have not seen 16X DVD-R media yet, nor have I found anyplace that sells dual-layer media for under like $14.00/disc. I'll not be doing dual-layer writes until the price comes to about $1.00/disc. I work in an environment with a mix of Cisco 2600, 3600, and 3700 routers and Cisco 2900XL, 2950, and 2970 switches. I can tell you from experience 3Com will never get in the door here with their substandard goods. We've had countless 3Com 3C905, 3C509, etc etc NIC's go bad for no reason. I wouldn't trust our business to 3Com switches or routers.

I would consider Juniper or Foundry equipment for certain applications, but not without demo hardware first to see how they integrated into our stricly Cisco network. VLAN trunking, spanning-tree, etc can differ immensly from one vendor to the next. Sometimes even the same vendor but different models do not interoperate quit the way one would expect.

In any case, if you are on the fence with either Cisco or 3Com, I'd tell you Cisco. We have lots of Layer 2 switches that they replace overnight with no issues. I've had Cisco send me exact replicas of routers in less than 4 hours (courier service), complete with memory and flash to test problems with integration. They really do offer top notch customer support and service.

Things I do not like about Cisco. If you buy hardware used from anyone but Cisco, it has to be recertified by Cisco Engineers before you can put it on Cisco maintenance. Sounds logical? Sure, until you see to recertify hardware is about the same price as getting some newer, faster, and more featured. I go through a nightmare every year when it comes time to renew our maintenance contract. I won't go into details, but it seems their database for this information is very cumbersome for the reps. They lack SSH as a standard connection option. Without certain IOSes this feature is not available at all. I wish they would change this.

  9. Wonderful! on Microsoft on Security: We'll Break Your Apps · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is the same mentality where I work. We have users still using Lotus 2.4, WordPerfect 5.1, and other crazy applications because the IS people refuse to **MAKE** the users do their own work. The users want the IS departments to migrate and test all the spreadsheets and documents for them because we have Office '97 or Office 2000 installed on the machines. Now 10 years ago when Lotus 2.4 and WordPerfect were introduced we didn't go around making macros and cell calculations for them did we? But we try to introduce new products to keep up with the times and they act stupid on us and say we are killing business because we **WON'T** migrate their stupid macros.

We can't even get the users to try and open the spreadsheets in Excel or Word. They just refuse to do it. My recommendation in the last meeting was to just turn off Lotus 2.4 and WordPerfect (apps run on server) and tell the user either to use Microsoft Excel and Word or find a new job.

My point being, Microsoft is doing exactly what should be done. You want everything to be stable and secure, well you better be ready to upgrade or patch whatever doesn't work after we do our fixes.

  10. Re:love LAN parties - but we get LAG on Fragfest · · Score: 1

The problem isn't the bandwidth...its a hub. Probably 10mbit and always half-duplex. Go get an D-Link or Linksys 8-port switch for less than $100. You'll get 100mbit full-duplex (really 200mit) Hub technology just doesn't support a speedy backplace because it works on another OSI model layer (layer 1? just an electrical repeater) whereas a switch works at Layer 2 (or Layer 3 but really expensive) where the packets get analyed by the ASIC's of the switch and it'll only forward traffic based on the mac address...a hub send it to everyone! When you get into the better switch (Cisco 1900, 2900XL, and now the 2950's...these are manageable switches) you add the capability of a feature called EtherChannel, which allows you to bind upto 8-ports on the switch for say crossing over to another switch for big bandwidth hogs or to a server. IMHO, you just need to scrap the hub and get a cheap unmanageable switch. Thats what my friends and I did and it made all the difference.

  13. Dell OptiPlex Systems on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

Well, after reading this I thought I would share my experiences about Dell. The company I work for is contracted to provide 400 desktops/laptops per year. They decided that Dell OptiPlex GX1's and GX100's (Celerons) would be the best bet. Not bad systems really, when you look at performance vs. price you really are getting a deal and the people who work with them don't complain since they used to have NEC 386's and HP 486's. Plus, they now had 17" ViewSonic/NEC monitors and speakers built into them to attach to the sound cards.

So probably about 2 years into the purchasing of these machines we start getting tons of hard drive failures. They never came with a warning; it was like boom drive is gone. For some reason we have a network that no one ever uses, so drives were getting sent out to get data recovered. So we start calling Dell, we've got 20 drives (Western Digital & Quantum) that fail with the drive testing utility made by Western Digital off their site. They decide they want us test again, on the phone, every drive with the same utility. You could physically hear the drive arm hitting the platters and motors grinding and crap. So we flat out refuse, tell them we've already done the same thing. They refuse to replace without doing this. So we eventually go through this dozen of times, and finally get a logical tech on the phone that replaces all 20 in one swoop. No credit card needed just sends an Airborne Express Overnight package with all 20 with a return label (paid by Dell) for the broken ones.

We go through this month after month. Summer comes along in year 3 and we get an intern and temp hired on to do nothing but call Dell and get these drives replaced. We eventually find out that Dell had a recall on these drives but we were never informed of it. When we mention this they think we are crazy and making it up. Anyway, the intern gets new drives in...installs them and reboots one of the PC's. Low and behold, it boots to a Windows 98 desktop. Now, thinking this is crazy she starts looking around on it to see if the config we use. Nope. Instead we got a hard drive from someone else's PC that had been remanufactured in some way. They didn't even bother to wipe the thing.

We called Dell about it, they apologized. We were really ticked off because we had drives with sensitive info we couldn't wipe because of problems with them...but someone else might be getting them. From there on out, we bulk tape erased them and drove a nail through them so they couldn't remanufacture them. Fixed that problem.

Now, I've dealt with Dell on server hardware problems and you couldn't ask for better service. Never question my technical ability to diagnose the problem...much like Cisco. Dell just doesn't care about the desktop/laptop side.

I could write a book about Dell and there service, both good and bad...but IMHO build your own PC's. You'll save in the long run.

I don't understand how Cisco will not let you upgrade to the newest IOS (12.X) and upgrade the hardware. We've got some bugs that affect our 3640 routers every once in a blue moon, but its devastating when it happens. So we called Cisco, and they said this specific 12.X version will fix that and other problems, but your going to need more memory (~64MB). We bought memory from a third party vendor that was on Cisco's approved vendor list, turns out it was the same Samsung memory in it from the factory. So $300 for 3rd party memory vs. $3000 from Cisco (with discount). However, just about two weeks ago we received word from Cisco that the approved vendors list for memory had been scrapped. You must now buy all memory from Cisco...ugh! So we won't be upgrading anytime soon.

I am just curious why Cisco has subjected you to this treatment. Perhaps I am naive, but I certainly don't want this situation to arise at my Cisco shop. Please, enlighten me!

Yes, I said GT3 in addition to others. IMHO, EA Sports has done a fine job where others have failed making sports games. NFL2K1 repeats itself over and over as far as the commentary, I've not heard much of that in the NHL2K2 for PSX2. One thing it has, it when you make your own players it can say their first names if they aren't complicated. Instead of just announcing a number, they say the first name. How cool is that? Don't know of any Dreamcast games that do that.

Silent Hill 2 has been out for a couple of weeks now. Ico is nice? Ico is incredible, there is no single Dreamcast game that looks that good. Do you know why? Because the PSX2 does about 7 million polygon calculations per second than the Dreamcast.

I don't see where you think the Dreamcast is all that, I've got about 50 games for it and it just sits because they suck in someway. I've played Shenmue, its like a game of trying to figure out a game. You could spend hours alone just opening drawers. The graphics were good, but the PSX2 crapiest graphics look as good.

PSX2 not innovative? Where are the USB, Fiber Optic ports, and Dolby Digital out on your Dreamcast? Oh and a 4x DVD/24X CD-ROM, too bad that GD-ROM on the DC is only 16X. You can't play DVD movies on that can you? What about buttons that work better the harder you press them? Yep, PSX2 has a Dual Shock 2 controller standard that rumbles and senses harder pressure on the buttons. You have to buy a rumble pack for your DC. I could go on and on.

Lastly, I only posted about games I personally have played and I am picky as hell about games. So the ones I listed are games I personally own and vouche for the quality. I bought Spy Hunter two weeks ago when it came out, and guess what? It sucked! You had to do all these licenses before you could even play with someone else head to head...so I took it back. Sure, it looked great but I don't want to always spend 16 hours getting licenses to play with a friend.

4.) Donate blood, and not just because of this incident...do it year round. The Red Cross is turning people away left and right because of the inability to process so much blood. If all of us that are able to donate once a year at the very least they could focus those workers efforts on different things (like disaster area first aid). Its sad that everyone wants to donate now because of the incident, but not the rest of the year when the Red Cross needs it so badly.
