as i am currently unemployed i couldn't afford a copy of xp at the minute. i certainly won't be able to afford a new computer to be able to run vista, even if i wanted to. As for free distros, i think knoppix has the best set of default applications and layout, but then i like kde. you can install this desktop and applications as a normal debian system by simply typing "knx2hd" as root( achieved in the while in live cd mode by typing sudo su), which is simple enough to write down on a piece of paper for mum and dad.it even has an application like partition magic called qtparted if you want to keep the windows installation and dual boot. install time is faster than i have seen for any operating system, and you can browse the web while you are waiting. for beginners in linux i would recomend this live cd/ installer cd called knoppix downloadable here
To be honest, i'm surprised microsoft hasn't had the drivers and ability to run on macintosh's stuck in windows for a long time. They wanted to be able to run on any grey box out there, so why not every box. It would be good for both companies even, as apple is a hardware manufacturer and would still sell units, maybe even with windows instead of OSX or a dual boot setup of some sort. And of course all microsoft care about is selling their OS. It might even (who knows) bring the stability that specific hardware can give to an OS to windows. stranger things have happened
maybe apple struck a deal with them to have a different type of processor than the public would be able to buy for grey boxs to hinfer attemptsd to run OSX on non apple hardware
i agree completely! i wish my father could play video games with any skill, it would give us at least one thing to talk about. however one of my uncles, i have happily spent many evenings laughing cheerfully as we killed prostitutes in GTA:San Andreas. truly, when this last gap is gone and everyone plays games, it will return to a more family time, with more leisure time spent together. i look forward to killing prostitutes with my own son/daughter (heh, just had to go back and add/daughter, guess i just learned something about my hopes for the future) in a cyber worldthat sounds like a joke but i'm deadly serious
if you try and copy any of the text out with a pen and paper, it explodes the pen in your hand and makes you unable to read any word prefixed by a the string $sony$
It's been easy ever since i've known it. without any instruction whatsoever, within 10 minutes of my first go on photoshop (and bear in mind i was VERY drunk and *ahem* something else) i had managed to manipulate a picture to make it look like my mate was sucking some bloke off (with a really cheesy grin on his face and those grinning teeth hooked over the tip of the offending member).
if that's not easy i don't know what is. if i can do it drunk and stoned first time, i'm sure joe six-pack can do it in half an hour. another good area where things keep getting easier is music production, where programs such as reason mean i know someone (drummer in one of my bands) managed to finish a whole song in reason, while on the same day asking me the brain exploding question of "where is the shift key?"
last time i checked the car runs mainly on the internal combustion engine, which seeing as it handles explosions to create force. this would be the part the water comes into contact with. not the cd player
what the deal is with the law...like so many miles out is international waters for ships and you can have sex cruises and whatnot. How many miles up would you have to be before you can start doing that line of coke off the hookers ass
i wouldn't consider buying one of these unless the warranty covered replacing my whole system if some water leaked out and futzed the inside. and whether i'm right or wrong, i would think most of the general public would feel the same. mind you this is for more of a geeky crowd at the minute
"Any respectable/. user should have most of this suite installed already (excluding a few things)"
well i installed nothing from it as i'm on of the "respectable/. user(s)" running linux on my main box. Seriously google, port some of this amazing software to the operating system that gave so much to you on the back end while you were starting up - all for free
why would they choose it over any other *nix you say?
the average user has never even heard of unix. however you would be hard pressed to find an internet user not familiar with google. branding goes a long way...and microsoft is know to be a security risk round the internet.....google has a good internet rep.
so they would choose it over any other *nix because they wouldn't know that they were choosing over anything. if this came out more people will hear of it than linux could hope to dream of
we all hoped for this while at the same time watched google go from "do no evil" to making deals with aol (basically they seem like they are just about to become slightly fuzzy round the edges)
the only way for them to keep their good name would eb to opensource the OS so people could see there is no spyware or phone home ability built in.
and let me say, if i were a rich man instead of someone who builds his pcs out of his friends castoffs when they upgrade, i would dearly love to try one of these out. although the only thing i would wonder is...if it becomes as big a hit as firefox has (eating into the microsoft internet explorer marketshare), what will this do to apple? i've a feeling it's more their sort of crowd who might try this. unless they've dumber it down to the extreme so joe sixpack can get his head round "it's not windows"
can't wait to actually see this if it comes out though. and....is that a chair i see flying through the air from redmond?
As someone who would dearly love a mac (since their OS has had a BSD core and a brilliant GUI) as a second computer this is good news to me. If i could take the eye candy of a mac and put it on my debian kde box it would be excellent.

there's always encryption. there's a whole world of dirty internet out there and if people want to see it they will find a way
i reckon i could take one of these down
