Yeah, Slashdotters wouldn't have much sympathy for Hasbro in that case, but that's not really a good example of reversing this situation. Despite mentioning it in your opening paragraph, you forgot the part where the game has been on the market for a long time. So, the scenario really should be:
1. Some independent developer comes up with a totally new game concept and codes it...
2. Fifty years later, Hasbro (or some large commercial entity) then copies the game...
I don't think the Slashdot "hive mind" has nearly so much sympathy for the independent developer...
"Slashdotters have maintained for years that userbase size has(almost) no relation to the number of exploits an OS gets."
Maybe kind of late to mention this, but I thought the standard Slashdot meme was that userbase size has almost no relation to the security, not the exploit count...
Maybe nobody will see this since the post is so late, and maybe somebody made the point elsewhere in this article, but one thing I have absolutely loved about the Nintendo DS is its ability to go into hibernate mode when you close it. You can play it while standing in line... just open it up and resume where you last were, and close it when you get to the front (or an old friend you haven't seen in a while comes up to say hi.) Truly, this is a feature that all consoles should have.
I'd say this feature is the #1 reason why my pokemon game has around 640 hours on its timer. (Play it while in line at Subway, or during lunch at work, or while helping put up a new garage door...)
I'm sure it's late enough where many eyes won't see this, but my DVD player doesn't have an open button on the remote and I sure do miss it. My player is in a location where, although I can find the eject button, I still can't really see it if the room is crowded and I can't get on my knees.
Fortunately, the "wait forever for it to eject" problem doesn't exist on my player so that makes it not so bad.:)
That only works if they're not shining in through the side mirrors, of course. When an SUV/truck is tailgating a small car it's possible for them to be shining in both mirrors at the same time. (I've had that happen to me a couple of times.)
Kind of late for a reply, but...
