    --Yahoo News is worth saving IMHO, but yahoo email got deprecated in my case pretty fast when they started doing Teh Stupid -- like getting rid of multi-tabbed email, datamining your private messages to serve ads, farting around with forced password changes, and now the latest - *blocking webmail entirely* for "a limited number of users" that use AD BLOCKERS. F'-d up Epic Stupidity there. It's like they're purposely trying to kill the experience.

    --I'm unhappy cuz yahoo was a primary email account for me since ~1997. Gmail is just OK but there's no really good free alternatives out there that I've found except for maybe Inbox.

    --It's arguably too late for Firefox. If you like what FF *used* to be, switch over to Palemoon. Pre-Australis interface, continued support for Plugins, even has a 64-bit Linux version. Never looked back after switching.

    --Distilled down a bit (this is my impression, feel free to chime in), if you have a bunch of people receiving money for effectively little-to-no work, you get a bunch of apathetic and Entitled lazy mofos.

    --Technical/artistic progress stagnates and nobody is really motivated to improve much because well, they get paid anyway. Remove the stick and give them the carrot anyway, and eventually they will fall behind and get conquered because of survival of the FITTEST. Someone hungrier than you and driven to succeed will end up eating your lunch, and your identity as a people will be lucky to survive - worst case scenario here is actually not dying, but becoming a slave to the conquerors and losing that comfortable life that you thought was assured.

    --I have wished similar in the past for laptops; being able to use the builtin screen directly as a display for another device would be a nice feature. However, there is a workaround. As long as you know the IP address for the PI (or in my case, Cubieboard), you can directly connect to it with SSH using your phone/tablet and a standard USB charger cable, and use that for display - here is a helpful HOWTO:

    --I agree with you. And not to go BOING offtopic, but someone needs to get this concept hammered into Microsoft's Xbox division as well. They failed to implement this with the One due to massive public outcry, but their next-gen console is reportedly supposed to be going in the online-only direction again. WTF people, it's a GAMES CONSOLE. I shouldn't *need* an active Internet connection to play a freaking GAME!

    --In fact, my 360 was still quite usable when I was having a cable Internet outage (several times) and helped pass the time. But if they make all games online-only instead of disc-based with a playable single-player mode, they deserve to get reamed - and they won't get my money.

    --IDK why I'm getting involved here, but you seem pretty free with your personal life, so why not. :)

    --If you're paying for her room, etc, you're creating a sense of obligation/gratitude. If she's in her 20's and you're retired, my advice is to simply befriend her (don't sleep with her!) because from what you say she's had more than enough trouble in her life so far as it is; why risk pregnancy on top of that? Do you really know her well enough that you know for *certain* that she wouldn't go after you for child support if it came down to it??

    --I have the same instincts to help people, but don't get involved in her mess. Seek professional counseling if you have the resources, ask someone you trust from church or an old friend if you're not sure you're doing the right thing. I can only give advice from a distance since I haven't met either of you, but my advice is to BE CAREFUL, guard your heart, and don't put either one of you at risk. Stop paying for her room if you don't want some kind of trouble down the road. (I say these things as a friend who has also been in some avoidable predicaments/romantic entanglements.)

    --There are *lots* of things you can do with a PI that are pretty neat. If you already know Linux, you can just leave the board up and running 24/7 with minimal power expense.

    --I chose to implement my Squid server on a Cubieboard instead, but you can do basically the same with a PI.

    --You can definitely add more disks if you are using mirrored drives in your pool, instead of RAIDZ. I created a Linux ZFS RAID0 (no redundancy) pool with 2 brand-new drives initially, then bought 2 more drives of the same brand and capacity a month later, and upgraded the pool in-place with no downtime to a zRAID10.

    --If I want to expand the size of the pool, I can just add 2 more disks in a mirrored configuration.

    # zpool add mirpool mirror ata-ST9500420AS_5VJDN5KL ata-ST9500420AS_5VJDN5KJ

    --Note that this syntax is using Linux /dev/disk/by-id devices.

    --There are some caveats and best-practices that one should read up on, for instance using ashift=12 with 4K sector drives; and using GPT partition tables on ZFS disks; but ZFS has by far been the most reliable and useful filesystem I've ever used.
