--Ebay is your friend. You can prolly get an old P166 Toshiba or Dell with 64-128MB of RAM, 4-gig HD, USB 1.1, Cardbus (buy your own wireless card) and vga-out for under $120.
--Hell, if this current dealie doesn't work out, I'll sell you mine! It's got 164MB of RAM, Win98se and Office 97, plus **docking station** with all ports duplicated and 3 PCI ports. $150.
--I really actually *liked* Nemesis. Tom Hardy **totally** nailed the Picard character.
--In fact, I rank Nemesis up there with the Greatest Trek Movies Of All Time: o Khan---!! o The save-the-whales movie o The Borg movie...and now Nemesis. Yes I'm something of a Trek geek, but purposely _not_ posting the real names of the movies (or imdb links.);-)
--I have a 56K modem and it takes (on average) about 3 hours to DL a typical RvB Quicktime movie. (shrug) I just let it run late-night/early morning, when I'm not using the computer much; and I have the timeout set to hang up after 12 minutes of no activity. Works for me.
--Buy a few cheap Ultra-66 IDE controllers (if you can still find them), LVM the drives together. Then run ' badblocks ' on the LVM device. Just be sure to invest in another powersupply as well...
--Would you care to explain that pls? I haven't been able to initiate X Windows from a "screen" session for a couple of *years.* (Either using "startx" or "xinit".) If I back out of "screen" to the bare VT, X starts up fine.
> I have never been able to get a Yamaha sound chip to work and I have never heard of anyone who has.
--I have an old P166 Toshiba laptop (Tecra) that has a Yamaha chip (OPL3-SA2), and I got it working with OSS (to a limited extent) in kernel 2.6. Reply back/email me if you'd like details. (For slower computers, distcc is your friend when compiling kernels.)
--I will tell you this, from personal experience. Vmware 3.x sound can be a bit of a pain, because the SB-emulated sound card doesn't show up in ' lspci '. But here's what you do to fix it:
' modprobe sb ' ' aumix '
--That's it. But you have to KNOW TO DO THAT. There still *are* a lot of rough edges with Linux as far as end-user usability goes, let's be honest. This guy may be pointing out valid problems that will confuse the hell out of n00bs (I haven't RTA;-) and those issues still need to be addressed.
--To me, that is a HORRIBLY GLARING **usability fault** with ALSA, and one reason why I've never really liked it. The fact that they *still* leave the sound muted by DEFAULT just pisses me off royally. What in the world is the justification for that??
--Yep, that's pretty much my take on it as well. Haven't RTA, but... If you bought $hardware that doesn't work with Linux -- SORRY, *you* bought the WRONG HARDWARE.
--Not true in 100% of cases, mind you... But that's why we have compatibility lists out there. In the following cases at least, Linux in general needs improvement with regards to drivers and usability:
o Printers o SATA o Firewire (heard 2ndhand) o DVD burning at the commandline (I WANT UDF *write* support in 2.4 dammit!)
--That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure others can chime in as well.
--OABTW, for potential flamers -- I spend *most* of my time in Linux these days, running on 2 hd-installed Knoppix boxes with the latest vanilla Linus kernels. I know a fair bit about where support is lacking currently. Not to say things won't improve, but it will take a *while* before 2.6 kernel series is close to 2.4's current compatibility.
> "Fire at will" laws allow employers to get rid of dysfunctional employees at the drop of a hat instead of having to deal with heavy government restrictions like in France and Sweden.
--Agreed. A cup would make sense with that costume. HOWEVER, that is seriously a truly freakin' cool costume. It doesn't matter to me that he bought premade armor pieces; he basically reworked everything from scratch to make it look better.
--The only improvements I'd make are: o Get a professional artist to clean up the messy bits (non-straight lines, dots that are slightly "off" - this is supposed to be a circuit pattern, it should be less jagged.
o More circuit patterns/designs, especially on the legs. Fill in some of the blank areas more.
o DEFINITELY wear a cup next time, and at least *attempt* a diet/workout before the next 'con.
o Reconsider the shoes. Storm-trooper type Boots perhaps, but much harder to pull off with the necessary detailing; maybe custom high-tops? Iffy.
--That said, he's done 9/10ths of the work already - and pulled it off a lot better than I ever could. Massive props to teh guy.
--I wouldn't balk at buying an HP computer these days (altho I'd replace the powersupply 1st thing with at least a 300W) because they've made strides with Linux compatibility... But I really truly despise Carly F.
